This is my comprehensive review of the Megadap ETZ21 Autofocus adapter for mounting Sony E-Mount lenses to Nikon Z camera bodies. The ETZ21 is an improved version of the former ETZ11 with massively improved autofocus speed and autofocus accuracy. I am deeply impressed by the performance of this tiny little adapter which opens up a whole new world in terms of lenses for Nikon Z photographers and Nikon Z videographers (for Sony cinema lenses). In the video I mount several excellent E-Mount lenses on Nikon Z cameras, demonstrate their autofocus speed and focus tracking and also show lots of sample images shot on the Nikon Z9 with Sony E-Mount lenses mounted via the Megadap ETZ21 adapter.

19:13 Conclusions
At @17:39 when I discuss the use of Sony cinema lenses on the Nikon Z9, this opens up completely new possibilities since these Sony cinema lenses have a motorized "Power Zoom" for very smooth video transitions.

  • Well, I use the Megadap ETZ21 II with my Nikon Z9. And I use with a wide variety of Sony lenses, including the Sony 200-600mm and Sony 600mm 4.0 GM and some others.And yes, all lenses are working on the Z9 with the Megadap adapter. Working means the Z9 can focus and also things like Eye autofocus and Animal Autofocus are working. For moving subjects like birds though you have to make compromises. Less on focus acquisition but more on the performance of subject tracking. I simply missed shots I would get with the A1 here. Also, with the Sony 50mm 1.2 GM focussing works only reliable at f/1.8, f/1.2 you cannot focus and f/1.4 sometimes only. With the Sony 135mm 1.8 it is the same, you cannot focus reliable at f/1.8. All in all not bad, it is a good product but requires further firmware updates.

    • It looks like the performance is similar to the older Techart adapter which I owned and used with a Z7. IMO these do work but for professional shoots where you have to rely on repeatable autofocus it would be a NO GO for me.

I will be buying the adapter ASAP for my Z9 as I have several Sony lenses and only 1 Nikon lens at the moment. The Megadap looks like the AF is faster than in the case of Canon EF lenses on Metabones V or Sigma MC-11 on Sony E mount. I hope the 100-400 and 200-600 work well enough for action and birding/wildlife.

  • Your reviews are always so well done both in the exacting almost scientific like explanations and the fluidity when going from one item to the next. This particular episode is interesting to me in two ways. First is that my grandson, who uses the Sony A7III body with some very nice lens, might consider lending me one or two for use on my Z9 with that ETZ21 adapter. Secondly, and totally unrelated, I'm thinking that the absence of a proper cinema lens for the Z9 might be a barrier for a videographer who is interested in using the "affordable" Z9 ( compared to commercial video cameras). This ETZ21 adapter which allows the use of a Sony cinema lens on the Z9 body might just remove that barrier. Nikon also advertises a remote hand control for the Z9. Did RED see this coming? Just my random thoughts. Thanks so much for these excellent reviews.

  • From what I'm seeing, using the Sony 100-400mm and 400 2.8 on a Z8 & Megadap ETZ21, there's no stabilisation through the VF but judging from the shot sharpness there is at shutter release. On the 400 2.8 that applies in OSS modes 1 and 3.

  • Great review. The only thing I’m curious about is autofocus for video. Do you know if it behaves the same as native z mount lenses where it can slowly and smoothly shift focus between subjects or is it sudden and quick like f mount lenses adapted to z mount with an FTZ. This is why I sold my f mount lenses and ftz adapter because f mount lenses are not good for autofocus on z system for video if you need smooth autofocus transition. Most of my lenses are manual focus but when adapting a lens with autofocus I will always think how does it perform with video.

  • Exactly what I was looking for, thank you! Are you German btw.? :D Your accent sounds German. This probably also would mean that the adapter is available in Germany which is great. One more thing: how is the AF performance in videos with moving subjects? One thing is being able to recognize eyes/faces, the other one is real fast-tracking and on-point autofocus in videos, I think that's a harder task to accomplish, therefore I'm not completely sure if the performance is similar to native lenses in this scenario.

      @mathphotographer@mathphotographer Жыл бұрын
  • Since the arrival of those adapters people are not stuck anymore to native lenses. Now you can buy an excellent lens and adapt them to your camera and when you are switching camera brands there is no need to sell your lenses and buy the same lenses back from another brand. This is such a big leap forward. So the quote "You marry a lens and date a camera !! " is more applying than ever !

    @RS-Amsterdam@RS-Amsterdam Жыл бұрын
    • Fully agree - big step forward. So far so-called autofocus adapters were often laggy, slow and only half-way performing. The ETZ21 instead is really the opposite: quick in focussing, delivering whats promised by the advertising statements and clearly a big plus for Sony lens and Nikon Z camera owners!

  • I've seen a lot of photography channels on KZhead bash Nikon because they haven't put out as many z lenses as they think Nikon should. You can adapt almost every other manufacturers lenses to the z cameras but they can't adapt the z lenses. I'm not sure if Nikon can adapt the Canon R mount but I would think they can. This makes it easier to transact from another brand to Nikon. You can keep your lenses until you can afford to sell them off and replace them with Nikon lenses.

I don't think it will be a direct competitor to the Nikon z8, as the z8 is competing against the Sony a1. I guess the a9iii will be great for pictures but won't be as good as the z8 for video, and will stay below 40MP, otherwise there would be no need for a a1 anymore. And I think the a9III will be a lot more expensive than the z8, since even the a9II still cost 700€ more than the z8 and is already four years old.

    • Thanks Massimo, I only tested the Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8, and with this lens the adapter works perfectly together on the Nikon Z9. The programming of the Tamron lens via the Tamron lens utility is something I just looked into this weekend. Most of the functions are available on the Nikon Z9 via the adapter. To make an example, via the Tamron lens utility you can program smooth video transitions between two arbitrarily chosen focus points in the scene. The transition works fine with the adapter on the Nikon Z9 but the speed of the transition I could not change as I can it for my Sony A1. So almost every button and customization is working, in particular quick autofocus and focus tracking but some "exotic" functions like programmable video transition speed are not yet working with the ETZ21.

I know the Kipon M645-SE ES adapter does not provide auto focus, and I have a reasonable understanding of the technical reason why that is not possible, but I would hope that the electronic apeture of the lens could be controlled by a Z camera via these two adapters.

  • ATG Gold S 200-500/2.8 [(400-1,000/5.6) modified for Sony SLT-A99 series + ATG A to E Adapter] works very well on ETZ to Z! It's not your everyday lenses that pros can afford. Prices of that Sigma during those days were over $30,000.00!

  • You know what my reason is for wanting to use this adapter on the Z9? It’s because the Sony 50mm 1.2 GM lens is so much more portable than the Nikon Z50mm f1.2 lens

  • I found this when using aperture ring on Sony 50GM. I try to turn the ring from 16 to A, then the junction part rattles or moves a bit. So it seems the adapter will move a little when you turn it clockwise ! Is it normal ? Z lens don’t have this issue.

  • There is one thing, that I find quite interesting: Using Leica M-cameras and lenses as well as Sony cameras I know, that adapting M-Lenses to Sony bears the problem of a reduced corner sharpness - mainly with wide angle lenses - and smeared corners. So one has to close the aperture to obtain a better quality. In other words: M-Lenses perform on Lica M-cameras much better because M-cameras have a thinner cover-glass on their sensors as Sony-cameras. On the other hand it is said, that Nikons Z7 II are perfectly usable to adapt Leica-M-lenses as the Nikons do also have a rather thin cover-glass on the sensors. Now ... if you adapt Sony-lenses, which are designed for Sony-sensors isn't there not the same problem because of different cover-glasses on the sensors? (Sorry for m rather bad English, but I think most people her do not understand German ...)

    • Good question, no idea why currently we see only one direction.

      @mathphotographer@mathphotographer Жыл бұрын
    • It is the distance from lense to sensor that matters. Sony has the 2 millimeters more than nikon z. So adapting sony to nikon is possible by creating an adapter that is 2 millimeters thick, adapting nikon to sony is not.

  • Having a Nikon Z6II body, I was quite well frustrated by the fact I had to get back to the old DLSR F lenses to be able to shoot at 1.4. Although loving the Nikon feel, I was even considering to migrate towards Sony because of this. This adaptor is an absolute game changer that opens a whole new Pandora’s box for me ! @lukecerritelli@lukecerritelli Жыл бұрын
    • Ha! Respectfully disagree :) Sony makes excellent lenses in the G-Master line-up and also in the Carl Zeiss line-up. But the field of application of this adaper, as said in the video, is a different one: if you have the same lens available in Nikon-Z and Sony-E mount, your comment is spot on: why using a Sony lens with adapter if you already have that type of lens from Nikon ... but there are some lenses which are just not yet available in the Nikon-Z portfolio, and then using a Sony lens with adapter makes sense in my opinion.

  • Off topic but I had to laugh when I found out that all cockpit scenes in Top Gun 2 where filmed with Voigtländer 21mm f1.4 lenses. So much for Nikon canon Sony Leica Zeiss. When you need the best for scenes costing $11000 per hour to fly you use Voigtländer.

    • Ha! I hoped the two series of sample images outside provided some proof of evidence how it is shooting the adapter outside in the field ;) I think I mentioned it somewhen in the video: shooting a native Z-lens on a Z-Camera body is always the best combination. But if you own some pro Sony lenses or if you wanna shoot an E-Mount lens on a Nikon-Z Camera, then this adapter is a solution. Clearly, if you then get exactly the same lens type as a Nikon-Z lens, your shooting will be even happier :)
