Everybody is familiar with the feeling that things are not as they should be. That you are not successful enough, your relationships not satisfying enough. That you don’t have the things you crave.
In this video we want to talk about one of the strongest predictors of how happy people are, how easily they make friends and how good they are at dealing with hardship. An antidote against dissatisfaction so to speak: Gratitude.

Ohai! For a change a few personal words. My name is Philipp and I started this channel almost seven years ago - you don’t know my voice but you have heard my words because I write most of our scripts. Oh boy. This was a hard video to make. Gratitude felt vaguely risky to do as a topic. It has this aura of cheap Instagram hashtag self help stuff. Some of you will hate this video deeply, and the thought of that made me pretty anxious writing it. Gratitude was not supposed to be a video topic originally. Just like the Nihilism and Loneliness videos, the script was based on personal struggles and part of the process of dealing with them. And so it felt right to make gratitude a video too. But Kurzgesagt is not a self help channel, so we'll keep this sort of content at roughly one or two per year. We hope they are helpful to some of you. If you care for my take on how to practice Gratitude, we made a Kurzgesagt Gratitude journal to combine the science with practical tips. shop.kurzgesagt.org/ Edit: PRE-ORDER is available again. Please note: You don’t need to buy this or anything else to practice gratitude - you only need a pen, a piece of paper and 5 minutes. Thank you for watching our videos and reading this comment. Being able to do Kurzgesagt means a lot. To me and the whole team. - Philipp

@@MisterK9739 your missing the point. It's a great quote, but there are bittersweet things, and while the general gist of it's true, there are many things that you should be optimistic about, and things that if your not pessimmistic about, your clearly not understanding it correctly. You can be both, and be correct about life.

you are disgusting! 😡😈
Ehhh I'm not so sure. Giving that disclaimer was sort of mandated because of how bad it would look if they didn't. > Video about how to be happier (something which goes right to the core of what literally everyone wants) > In the video, explain that the study results show you can improve it on your own with no products. > We made a book which tells you how to be happier. It does seem like a bit of an exploitative bit of merch. Playing on everyone's desire to be happier and flying under the banner of study-informed, while not actually adding anything proven to work in those studies. It would not reflect well on them if they didn't address that.
How about thinking it as a point of view? I think no one have to argue about this. Thoguh no one did XD
The problem is bad formation mixed with Marxism and atheist philosophy and Gnosticism which indoctrinated the people through Human Resources at work and through the textbook publishers at university and college with complete funding and donations through your government which sold itself to the devil.
@@TheRABIDdude He did state that practicing gratitude would not solve depression or anything like that, it’s just one piece to the puzzle 6:54. It won’t completely make you immediately happy and that’s not what he claimed in this video. The book is a guide in case you don’t know where to start like a lot of therapeutic practice books.

"In the end, how you experience life is a representation of what you believe about it." This is a major concept of why one should strive towards and keep a positive mindset and that is where gratitude kicks in in maintaining that too.

A couple of months ago, I found myself feeling dissatisfied, bored, and a bit lonely. So I started to make a conscious effort to express gratitude for everything. Since I started doing that, I found myself noticing more and more things to be grateful for. Gratitude is an amazing thing and no one should ever doubt its power and effect on both yourself and others. I am so grateful for this channel and everything they do to help spread knowledge and information that I find so intriguing and interesting.

@@MichaelAbreu I own the old Odyssey and the Quest. The Odyssey has many better features when comparing: + Resolution on PC VR titles + FOV + More comfortable for long play sessions + Extremely easy to use as Windows 10 has it's integration built in. + Sim racing and flying games, this is the best hands down. The Quest is a beast though: + Mobility with no wires (Cannot stress enough, it's another level going wireless) + Tracking and tracking volume is much better than Odyssey (more cameras and dedicated processor onboard) + Recent addition of PC VR support (works unbelievably well but res is definitely lower when directly comparing) + Future updates (maybe wireless PC VR, hand tracking etc) + Cross buy with Oculus Rift games (not all but quite a few) along with SteamVR etc The above is a quick comparison but if you can afford it, the Quest is the better choice for value and future extensibility. If you cant afford the extra, the Odyssey is a fantastic entry into the market. If you're a sim person, Odyssey is the hands down winner though.
Man i remember an event when i was young and had a very narcissistic mind and thought of me as a tough guy, i was studying to be a Chef in an small institute...and we had this French culinary teacher, that was really a pain in the ass, i mean it, she was extremely severe and calculating in how she directed and looked at students, she was frightening, but one day, she talked to us in a very different way, she started to talk about how grateful we all should be of having studies, having the opportunity to be in an institute that was prestigious, and then she started to talk about her life, the only thing i remember is she saying: "when i open the shower knob in the morning and water starts flowing and splashing my face and pour all my body...i thank God and life, for having this...". And i was like: "but its just water" At that time...i took it for granted, i was still young and immature to know what it meant...until it hit me later, as there was a severe drought in one part of Africa in the news and i saw how people were dying because there was no water...it might sound silly but that made me redefine my whole mindset, i was starting to feel..grateful for being able to breathe, for the sunshine, for the rain, for the water, for having full organs, and healthy, for having a family and some friends (as i was not that social) and for being able to have electricity and playing in my small PC, this sole idea changed me forever and was finally solidified when i read a quote from Cormac Maccarthy´s the great american writer: "“You never know what worse luck your bad luck has saved you from.” ― Cormac McCarthy, No Country for Old Men". Your life can always be turned upside down, don´t take it for granted, enjoy it with a humble and grateful mindset and you will apreciate every bit of it...

This was exactly what I needed! I was abused for many years, and I finally found the "root" of my trauma. I would basically ask for help from anyone that would listen, and yet, no help ever came. As a teenager and in my twenties, I lost hope in everything, including life. But now I'm trying to find hope again and build a life that's worth living. I think gratitude journaling will help me find what I'm looking for, and I'm grateful for this video.
Thank you for sharing your story. Do you still gratitude journal? How is it for you?
Hi, just wanted to share my story, bc maybe it helps me. Last year my mother got infected with covid, she didn’t have and previous diseases, she was sporty, healthy and not old. I was 18 by that time and within 1 week she got intubated, put into artificial coma, and stayed like this for 2 months. I was given the autority for her, I was grateful for that, my parents are divorced and nobody knows my mother like I do. The doctors told me horrible things, that she wouldn‘t make it and that they don’t know what to do anymore. It was hard to watch my strong mother like this, but during this time no matter what the doctors said, I stayed positive, it was no option in my head that my mum wouldn‘t wake up and become healthy again. So somehow the doctors managed to save her life, after 4 months she was extubated and awake. She was allowed to come home. We were more than grateful. But 1 week later she got an sepsis And needed to go to the hospital again. She stayed there another months and needed surgery. But than she came home and was able to do everything normally again. It was and is like a miracle. But then a thought popped to my mind, she was healthy and strong and still covid almost killed her what if she gets infected again, so I stopped meeting my friends and my boyfriend, it was all my desicion, my mother told me to do everything normally but I‘m just too afraid to loose her. I would live in another apartment for 2 weeks to meet friends and then do 10 days or More of quarantine and several pcr tests to make sure I don’t have covid and than go back to my mum. But it‘s not the same, because I‘m not free in my desicions, there‘s always the thought of loosing her, but it‘s also tearing me apart to live like this. This year I‘m moving to another country for studying, so I will be able to do whatever I like, but I won‘t have my mother by my side. I‘m stuck in a dilemma on one side I‘m very grateful on the other side I keep asking myself why this happend to us. And I‘m sad that I missed out on so many things with friends, especially now where I know how precious time is and how wisely you should use it. Please be kind, it‘s a very personal story for me. Thank you
I hope you're doing well
Please be kind - to oneself - to each other. One of the most important ways to be. Thank you. Be kind to yourself.
Wow you are so strong at your young age. You have decided the very best for your Mom and your family and you should be very grateful to yourself and also for life that she survived 😊think you should now take the good decision for you to enjoy your year abroad to the fullest. My dad once told me an amazing thing... "Son, you're smart. You ask questions at an age where others choose to play games. Don't think this is a good thing from all perspectives. You'll see more of the shit in the world than other people. It'll be harder for you to find love, harder to tolerate injustice. Ultimately, there's a chance you'll be less happy than the person you call stupid. Don't judge people. Live your life, and try to relax. Turn on your aggressive and analytical mind only when it is necessary, or you will burn out. And if you ever meet someone who you feel a connection with, a friend or more, don't let them go. It'll be much harder for you to replace them. People are different, most are already set on a path they will walk to their grave. Don't try to change strangers, don't judge them either. Waste your breath and time, on the people that matter." God, I'm only starting to understand...

Having a habit of gratitude should smooth the way - not hinder it. With this I mean that you don't have to feel gratitude about everything. Some days are awful. Some events are horrible. Some people are bad for you. Recognizing this makes gratitude a helpful tool, not a yolk wheighing you down.

Really useful, plain and simple. Self help videos like this 'more' than once a year would be helpful to quite a number of people, younger ones especially. My former driving instructor said that out of her current 26 pupils, 24 had been diagnosed with anxiety issues to varying degrees. That is an astonishingly high proportion. Anxiety is a serious modern problem and there are going to be a significant number of subscribers to this channel that would benefit from gentle hints on how to help combat this issue.

This video was the jumpstart to my self growth journey from ~2 yrs ago. The months after applying what I've learned from here, I can definitely say there were many positive changes, especially my quality of life, which sounds a bit crazy to say. However, at that time, I didn't realize the true value of practicing gratitude. It definitely (for me) significantly made life WORTH living. And I say this now because about a year after this video, I naturally moved on to another aspect of self growth for me, which wasn't a problem. But then I downplayed the importance of gratitude and appreciation, especially of the little things in life. I've only noticed those consequences of the lack of gratitude recently. More comparison, letting my ego drive me, feeling beat down and inferior from this mean world. It's difficult to look at the positives when you realize how mean this world can get. I was at my lowest in a while, literally a few days ago; I thought about it, and I realized that I was definitely dissatisfied and simply tired, I didn't see the worth of doing the things I was interested in or improving myself and doing it for myself. I've done a lot of the work; I challenged some core (self limiting) beliefs, unlocking my genuine self, healing some deeprooted, childhood issues (I have still SO much to grow). Yet, there was something still missing. And that was the emotional part, the soul. Gratitude. After that year of not practicing gratitude, it felt very weird. But after small doses, that familiar, nostalgic feeling of happiness did come back. I now realize my mistakes, and I will do my best to avoid them. And now I can continue to exist, grow, live, after finding out, once again, what makes life so worth living
Thank you for sharing your story and realizations. Do you still gratitude journal? How is it for you? What are you grateful for in this moment?

That's probably why religious people are happier than secular people
I'd forgotten about how much my gratitude lists helped me in my first 8 months of sobriety. These past 8 months have been much harder without those simple lists. I didn't even do them everyday, but they made me feel better overall and immediately, in the moment.
goshhh so it's been a few...years since i came back to this channel and for some reason this video has me on verge of happy tears 🥺 i am so grateful that this channel exists!! 💜
The existence of this channel is a HUGE REASON to be grateful

9:04 everyday Kurzgesagt animation is getting more realistic.
I too realized that
Getting uncanny..
And we are grateful for that
it almost looks like real life
Lol it's so cute how some people just do NOT get sarcam, reminds me of Grandma Tsunade
I like that he said that 'you don't need to buy anything for gratitude journaling' 😊
This video found me at just the right time. Wonderful content and I'm grateful I was introduced to this channel and am always thankful for your hard work, time, and research y'all put into each of your videos! much love!
When objective, scientific videos are more motivating than motivational speakers
Yes 👏 If anything motivational speeches just sound like the same things being repeated over and over again, and it’s honestly annoying. This video was 10X more informative and motivational than any motivational speeches I’ve heard. For me, motivational speeches just hit for the moment and fizzle out after a while. I think this video is different.
As it should be 😋
Kurzgesagt most of the time: "What if we BLOW UP THE EARTH with EVERYTHING WE CAN POSSIBLY THINK OF!!!?????” Kurzgesagt every once in a while: "But what is happiness, really?"
XD so true.
Let me fix that for you: -Kurzgesagt every once in a while: "But what is happiness, really?"- Kurzgesagt in a US presidential election run-up where several candidates are actively talking about taxing billionaire wealth: "Money doesn't buy everything--so write down what you're grateful for in our €24.95 gratitude journal!"
... to blow the Earth with everything we can possibly think of! Obviously!
This kind of topic I would expect in a new age-style, happy happy light light channel. To see this on a science channel backed by scientific data is both mind-blowing and heartening to a degree I cannot describe! Thank you so much for posting this! I truly hope that the years to come see you able to produce more videos that bring humanity closer to the joy that we all deserve!
"your relationship is not satisfying enough" _Laughs with no relationship_
I feel gratitude for not having a relationship and therefore safe from any relationship related disaster.
Be grateful that you aren't stuck in a bad relationship, therefore keeping yourself open for a potential good one entering your life at some point in future? :)

Waoh!!!! The amount of efforts, research and study put into this is overwhelming. So lovely to know that there are people who understand these seemingly small life-threatening problems and take really reasonable actions to do something for the world. So grateful for this video. ❤
I'm grateful for this KZhead channel!!! Thank you! 💯
After this covid -19 crisis gets over. We will all be greatful for simple things like going out whenever we want, meeting our friends, eating in a restaurant. Never underestimate the importance of small things.
i never really liked all that anyway, this is better.
@@GamerPro-wd7eh then be gratefull to covid 19 for giving you so much time
I have no friends and never do any of those things anyways
Birthdays.. Birthdays might never be the same again.. I miss how before Covid19 we took it for granted that we could blow on our food and share it with friends.. Here.. Have some of my cake and breath
Is this really how normal people see quarantine and the coronavirus? Both haven't affected my life at all. I still hate people, eating in restaurants and meeting with my only friend.

I read this quote last year . It's really helped me alot . Want to share ...."Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.”
Starting my gratitude journal here: • I love my hometown and I'm grateful that I live there • I'm grateful for my amazing family • I have a few friends but I'm grateful to have them in my life • I'm grateful that my life is going in the direction I want • I'm grateful for all the wonderful experiences in my life • I am grateful for my peaceful life
Amen
"We don't want to be a self-help channel...." And yet you guys have made a video that explains SO much in the easiest way! Honestly I think you guys could make a second channel and have that as the self-help channel.
Windsjorn I love their self help videos especialy the loneliness one
That’s a great idea I hope they will consider it
The self-help part is just scientific studies and good voice-acting. Not like i'm trying to de-value them, theyre videos are good and all, it's just that
@@quinnencrawford9707 But, that's literally every self-help channel out there. And every video on youtube can be knocked down to that. It's the CONTENT that makes the video what it is.
I second this

Thank you, I needed this today. I'm having some problems in my family, my relationship with my parents hasn't been so good lately, and this video gave me an important incentive. Thank you Kurzgesagt, you make my life better everyday.
This video remebers me of a quote from William E. Gladstone that goes somewhat like this: "be happy with what you have and are, be generous with both, and you won't have to hunt for happiness".
“How you experience life is a representation of what you believe about it”
Pretty spot on, a lot of Truth in it (excluding extreme scenarios)
well this quote was a slap in the face
@@l9324 So many people are full pessimism, indifference, and just to the brim with hopelessness. It says a lot about someone's beliefs, despite what they truly long for.
@@Eddi3Pwns i've longed for death for awhile

This video misses one huge finding of the “happiness researchers” regarding the gratitude journaling: why (they think) it works. The key to gratitude journaling is that you don’t repeat things you are grateful for. Each item, every day, is to be unique. What you are really doing is training your mind to find more and more things to be grateful for. In time and with a regular routine maintained, like the mindful awareness cultivated by a meditation practice, you will start to do this by habit, then unconsciously. In essence, you are habituating your awareness to seek out things to be grateful for (“have to find 3 new things to be grateful for today!!!), and like learning to ride a bike or write, with enough practice you will eventually do this without requiring conscious attention (or much of it). So if you are going to do a gratitude journal, this is key. Make each item you are grateful for unique.
"The key to gratitude journaling is that you don’t repeat things you are grateful for.", I think that part comes without saying.
@@Mastermay119 The researcher who brought attention to this said it was the most misunderstood aspect of the gratitude practice.

Also for all the research and care put into it.
These videos are just further conditioning by the state, trust the government, trust science, go out to work everyday and pay your taxes, buy their goods, eat, sleep, obay, consume, repeat. Open your eyes, the symbolism in these videos is shocking.

My wife and I saw this video when it first released. COVID and return to a new-normal changed the way we saw life for the worse. We've tried to journal, but it didn't stick. However, 4 years later, we recognize that we need to practice gratitude because we don't like the bad habits that developed during lockdown. We are optimistic about doing these exercises and thank Philipp for reminding us that small steps (like gratitude) can lead to big things.
I’m grateful that I got work done on a project I wanted to work on today. I’m grateful for the great food that I got to enjoy eating. I’m grateful for the consistency I’m getting by exercising in the morning. I’m grateful for the time I got to spend with friends. I’m grateful for the rain falling while I relax inside. I’m grateful for finding this video. I’m grateful for how nice and tidy I’ve made the house.
"we don't want to be a self help channel" I love you guys, you can be any kind of channel i'll probably still watch you
I dont see this as self help. I see this as the guys and girls running the channel showing they care about topics besides the depressing realities of, well, reality. They care about their viewers and the channel's main goal is to inform with relatable and easy to understand visuals.
