Everybody is familiar with the feeling that things are not as they should be. That you are not successful enough, your relationships not satisfying enough. That you don’t have the things you crave.
In this video we want to talk about one of the strongest predictors of how happy people are, how easily they make friends and how good they are at dealing with hardship. An antidote against dissatisfaction so to speak: Gratitude.

  • Ohai! For a change a few personal words. My name is Philipp and I started this channel almost seven years ago - you don’t know my voice but you have heard my words because I write most of our scripts. Oh boy. This was a hard video to make. Gratitude felt vaguely risky to do as a topic. It has this aura of cheap Instagram hashtag self help stuff. Some of you will hate this video deeply, and the thought of that made me pretty anxious writing it. Gratitude was not supposed to be a video topic originally. Just like the Nihilism and Loneliness videos, the script was based on personal struggles and part of the process of dealing with them. And so it felt right to make gratitude a video too. But Kurzgesagt is not a self help channel, so we'll keep this sort of content at roughly one or two per year. We hope they are helpful to some of you. If you care for my take on how to practice Gratitude, we made a Kurzgesagt Gratitude journal to combine the science with practical tips. shop.kurzgesagt.org/ Edit: PRE-ORDER is available again. Please note: You don’t need to buy this or anything else to practice gratitude - you only need a pen, a piece of paper and 5 minutes. Thank you for watching our videos and reading this comment. Being able to do Kurzgesagt means a lot. To me and the whole team. - Philipp

It's a great quote, but there are bittersweet things, and while the general gist of it's true, there are many things that you should be optimistic about, and things that if your not pessimmistic about, your clearly not understanding it correctly. • Ehhh I'm not so sure. Giving that disclaimer was sort of mandated because of how bad it would look if they didn't. > Video about how to be happier (something which goes right to the core of what literally everyone wants) > In the video, explain that the study results show you can improve it on your own with no products. > We made a book which tells you how to be happier. It does seem like a bit of an exploitative bit of merch. Playing on everyone's desire to be happier and flying under the banner of study-informed, while not actually adding anything proven to work in those studies. It would not reflect well on them if they didn't address that.

Since I started doing that, I found myself noticing more and more things to be grateful for. Gratitude is an amazing thing and no one should ever doubt its power and effect on both yourself and others. I am so grateful for this channel and everything they do to help spread knowledge and information that I find so intriguing and interesting.

The Odyssey has many better features when comparing: + Resolution on PC VR titles + FOV + More comfortable for long play sessions + Extremely easy to use as Windows 10 has it's integration built in. + Sim racing and flying games, this is the best hands down. The Quest is a beast though: + Mobility with no wires (Cannot stress enough, it's another level going wireless) + Tracking and tracking volume is much better than Odyssey (more cameras and dedicated processor onboard) + Recent addition of PC VR support (works unbelievably well but res is definitely lower when directly comparing) + Future updates (maybe wireless PC VR, hand tracking etc) + Cross buy with Oculus Rift games (not all but quite a few) along with SteamVR etc The above is a quick comparison but if you can afford it, the Quest is the better choice for value and future extensibility. If you cant afford the extra, the Odyssey is a fantastic entry into the market. If you're a sim person, Odyssey is the hands down winner though.

  • Man i remember an event when i was young and had a very narcissistic mind and thought of me as a tough guy, i was studying to be a Chef in an small institute...and we had this French culinary teacher, that was really a pain in the ass, i mean it, she was extremely severe and calculating in how she directed and looked at students, she was frightening, but one day, she talked to us in a very different way, she started to talk about how grateful we all should be of having studies, having the opportunity to be in an institute that was prestigious, and then she started to talk about her life, the only thing i remember is she saying: "when i open the shower knob in the morning and water starts flowing and splashing my face and pour all my body...i thank God and life, for having this...". And i was like: "but its just water" At that time...i took it for granted, i was still young and immature to know what it meant...until it hit me later, as there was a severe drought in one part of Africa in the news and i saw how people were dying because there was no water...it might sound silly but that made me redefine my whole mindset, i was starting to feel..grateful for being able to breathe, for the sunshine, for the rain, for the water, for having full organs, and healthy, for having a family and some friends (as i was not that social) and for being able to have electricity and playing in my small PC, this sole idea changed me forever and was finally solidified when i read a quote from Cormac Maccarthy´s the great american writer: "“You never know what worse luck your bad luck has saved you from.” ― Cormac McCarthy, No Country for Old Men". Your life can always be turned upside down, don´t take it for granted, enjoy it with a humble and grateful mindset and you will apreciate every bit of it...

      @denverspin@denverspin7 ай бұрын
  • Hi, just wanted to share my story, bc maybe it helps me. Last year my mother got infected with covid, she didn’t have and previous diseases, she was sporty, healthy and not old. I was 18 by that time and within 1 week she got intubated, put into artificial coma, and stayed like this for 2 months. I was given the autority for her, I was grateful for that, my parents are divorced and nobody knows my mother like I do. The doctors told me horrible things, that she wouldn‘t make it and that they don’t know what to do anymore. It was hard to watch my strong mother like this, but during this time no matter what the doctors said, I stayed positive, it was no option in my head that my mum wouldn‘t wake up and become healthy again. So somehow the doctors managed to save her life, after 4 months she was extubated and awake. She was allowed to come home. We were more than grateful. But 1 week later she got an sepsis And needed to go to the hospital again. She stayed there another months and needed surgery. But than she came home and was able to do everything normally again. It was and is like a miracle. But then a thought popped to my mind, she was healthy and strong and still covid almost killed her what if she gets infected again, so I stopped meeting my friends and my boyfriend, it was all my desicion, my mother told me to do everything normally but I‘m just too afraid to loose her. I would live in another apartment for 2 weeks to meet friends and then do 10 days or More of quarantine and several pcr tests to make sure I don’t have covid and than go back to my mum. But it‘s not the same, because I‘m not free in my desicions, there‘s always the thought of loosing her, but it‘s also tearing me apart to live like this. This year I‘m moving to another country for studying, so I will be able to do whatever I like, but I won‘t have my mother by my side. I‘m stuck in a dilemma on one side I‘m very grateful on the other side I keep asking myself why this happend to us. And I‘m sad that I missed out on so many things with friends, especially now where I know how precious time is and how wisely you should use it. Please be kind, it‘s a very personal story for me. Thank you

You have decided the very best for your Mom and your family and you should be very grateful to yourself and also for life that she survived 😊think you should now take the good decision for you to enjoy your year abroad to the fullest. I think your Mom is now strong enough she is maybe more immune than a lot of us to the virus after her strong infection and probably vaccinations too. You dont have to fear for her anymore and can now concentrate on yourself! ❤

  • My dad once told me an amazing thing... "Son, you're smart. You ask questions at an age where others choose to play games. Don't think this is a good thing from all perspectives. You'll see more of the shit in the world than other people. It'll be harder for you to find love, harder to tolerate injustice. Ultimately, there's a chance you'll be less happy than the person you call stupid. Don't judge people. Live your life, and try to relax. Turn on your aggressive and analytical mind only when it is necessary, or you will burn out. And if you ever meet someone who you feel a connection with, a friend or more, don't let them go. It'll be much harder for you to replace them. People are different, most are already set on a path they will walk to their grave. Don't try to change strangers, don't judge them either. Waste your breath and time, on the people that matter." God, I'm only starting to understand...

Some people are bad for you. Recognizing this makes gratitude a helpful tool, not a yolk wheighing you down.

Ironically and so perfectly I guess to say I'm grateful. Beyond grateful. Whatever went into this video, whatever conversations were had, doubts that got pushed past, the decisions that were made in yalls lives to get here; shout out to those too. I can't stress how much this truly has shaped the last few months of my life, and in turn also the people I love the most. Which is all I could ever, ever ask for. Theres so much more I want to say here, but for now I gotta keep riding out what yall gave me, and piece together what the last 6 months have been.I had to at the very least give a quick, sincere, giant thank you.

  • Really useful, plain and simple. Self help videos like this 'more' than once a year would be helpful to quite a number of people, younger ones especially. My former driving instructor said that out of her current 26 pupils, 24 had been diagnosed with anxiety issues to varying degrees. That is an astonishingly high proportion. Anxiety is a serious modern problem and there are going to be a significant number of subscribers to this channel that would benefit from gentle hints on how to help combat this issue.

  • This video was the jumpstart to my self growth journey from ~2 yrs ago. The months after applying what I've learned from here, I can definitely say there were many positive changes, especially my quality of life, which sounds a bit crazy to say. However, at that time, I didn't realize the true value of practicing gratitude. It definitely (for me) significantly made life WORTH living. And I say this now because about a year after this video, I naturally moved on to another aspect of self growth for me, which wasn't a problem. But then I downplayed the importance of gratitude and appreciation, especially of the little things in life. I've only noticed those consequences of the lack of gratitude recently. More comparison, letting my ego drive me, feeling beat down and inferior from this mean world. It's difficult to look at the positives when you realize how mean this world can get. I was at my lowest in a while, literally a few days ago; I thought about it, and I realized that I was definitely dissatisfied and simply tired, I didn't see the worth of doing the things I was interested in or improving myself and doing it for myself. I've done a lot of the work; I challenged some core (self limiting) beliefs, unlocking my genuine self, healing some deeprooted, childhood issues (I have still SO much to grow). Yet, there was something still missing. And that was the emotional part, the soul. Gratitude. After that year of not practicing gratitude, it felt very weird. But after small doses, that familiar, nostalgic feeling of happiness did come back. I now realize my mistakes, and I will do my best to avoid them. And now I can continue to exist, grow, live, after finding out, once again, what makes life so worth living

I remember watching this video before years back and how it captivated me but watching it back now almost brought tears to my eyes same with the Tail End video where mortality is discussed. Your videos have really changed the way I think about things and made me realized just how powerful is the human brain actually is. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.”

  • This video misses one huge finding of the “happiness researchers” regarding the gratitude journaling: why (they think) it works. The key to gratitude journaling is that you don’t repeat things you are grateful for. Each item, every day, is to be unique. What you are really doing is training your mind to find more and more things to be grateful for. In time and with a regular routine maintained, like the mindful awareness cultivated by a meditation practice, you will start to do this by habit, then unconsciously. In essence, you are habituating your awareness to seek out things to be grateful for (“have to find 3 new things to be grateful for today!!!), and like learning to ride a bike or write, with enough practice you will eventually do this without requiring conscious attention (or much of it). So if you are going to do a gratitude journal, this is key. Make each item you are grateful for unique.
