I bought a 1965 bug brand new when I was 18 yrs old. I was so proud of that little car and drove it for 8 yrs. I have fond memories of that car. I paid $1,955.14 out the door and when I got rid of it in 1973 I sold it for $900. I put 156,000 miles on it. When I was in the Navy I had it shipped to Hawaii. It was the perfect car for Oahu. I also met my wife in Hawaii and we went everywhere in that car. You are a true craftsman to take on a project like this, you made it look easy but a lot of sweat equity.

This is the VERY BEST restoration! It shows that one person, who found the right bug went ahead with willingness, perseverance, and commitment was able to restore this bug almost to a new condition. (those tiny imperfections don't count, it brings character to the restoration) Thank you! Thank you again! You are the personification of restoring something that was left out as junk. No fancy garage, no special tooling, just showing to everyone that it can be done. I watched it with sound off.

Excellent restoration. In 1963 I bought a new VW Beetle with a factory rag top sun roof. Cool. My first new car. $1650 for the bug, $90 for the sun roof, and $5 for an outside mirror. Total $1745. I couldn’t afford a Blaupunkt car radio so I bought one at Pep Boys and installed it myself. I drove that car to and from Florida several times and a round trip to California on Route 66. Fond memories.

I bought this car from Ed around 2015 and kept for many years. It was beautiful and nicely done. I only sold it because it was so nice, I didn't want to leave or drive it for fear of a scratch or ding. I now have a 64 with a worn partina.

That inserted drama crap has killed many a decent show, like American Chopper, Pawn Stars, etc., etc. They all became unwatchable after a few years. American Copper started out 80% bike building, 20% arguing. After a few years, it was 20% bike building, 80% nonsense. I have to hand it to Monster Garage. The producers came at Jesse James to do that stuff and he said "Screw it, I'll just stop doing the show." And he did.

I just love that! It's heartwarming that your son was involved too, great camera work!! You know these days the whole father - son bonding seldom happens anymore, treasure it!! What your doing with your son is what i wished i had with my father, so (to your son) you have no idea how fortunate you are, stay as close as you are now with your dad make that bond last a lifetime, and never forget how incredibly "cool" your dad is, and how very very fortunate you are!. Congratulations from Ireland, Mr Willson. I owned a 1600 VW, same as you restored.
Yeah good on ya ya bloke
This is the VERY BEST restoration! It shows that one person, who found the right bug went ahead with willingness, perseverance, and commitment was able to restore this bug almost to a new condition. (those tiny imperfections don't count, it brings character to the restoration) Thank you! Thank you again! You are the personification of restoring something that was left out as junk. No fancy garage, no special tooling, just showing to everyone that it can be done. I watched it with sound off.
The fact that you sprayed it in the garage open air leaves me in awe! I wouldn't dare try that. My Woman would kick my ass if she caught me. Awesome job!!
I rather watch this than most automotive restoration shows on TV. They never really show you the process like this video does. Great job!
Mr. Ed Wilson I truly admire your passion, professionalism and suiting attitude and I enjoyed watching every second of this video. You did an amazing job and everyone around you should be proud and thankful of having you. I wish you all the best.
neetoiyevapeuur
Were all the walls and toolboxes covered with paint after all that spraying?
I had volkswagens all my life growing up- '67 bus, 71 Karmann Ghia, and such. I am now ready to sell my '08 Mazdaspeed 3 and get an old VW to restore. Though this gentleman wasn't a professional mechanic/restorer, he had some basic skills and accomplished the mission. That's the beauty/attraction of owning and working on these old cars- just about anyone can do it. AND, it's wayy too much fun!!!
I'm a professional videographer as well VW enthusiast.......I'm planning on filming my bug restoration when I start later this year. Good job on this film and rebuild!
I'm very pleased with the way this gentleman handles this bug , and gave it new life once again to be on the road for years to come. Big up.
I don't even know why I love these cars. They're slow, noisy, old fashioned and uncomfortable. Yet I absolutely adore them! Great rebuild.
Watching this again. I wish those TV restoration shows would be like this, without all the fake scripted drama and bad acting. Restoration Garage, I'm talking to YOU!
i agree...
The amount of time and work put in to this build and the amount of knowledge and skills required is just phenomenal. I admire people that have this set of skills. This is a life worth living when you build something with your own hands...
Not only a great build but the amount of time it must've taken to put this video together is unreal. Great job!
EXCELLENT! Truly enjoyed. I have owned 11 VW Bugs beginning with a 1956 oval window, 1962 Convertable, 1966 Bug, 1968 Bug, 1972 Super Beetle, Built a 1968 VW Trike Bike, bought & flipped several others and have owned a 2012 VW Bug since new and just took it off the road at 157 K miles....will partially restore and sell to young kid. I just bought a "Covid Car"...2019 VW Jetta SE-R, winter package.....it was purchased brand new and the lady put 1500 miles on it, caught Covid & died. Car sat in heated garage until one month ago when the family traded it in on an SUV. I LIVE AND BREATH VW....thank you for the GREAT VIDEO.
I've watched this video several times! It's informative and well done. My son and I are just starting out with our own project, a 1967 bug. Wish us luck!
Officer Rob good luck i hope you're done the project
im gonna rescue and restore a 1960 vw beetle and i will create it in herbie but im 12 years old and i need to wait 3 years wish me luck!
67's are a highly prized year for a beetle
Officer Rob wasr
Officer Rob we have a we have a 1952 Beetle that we are working on and it's just stripped
Love it when he said: "My wife doesn't need to see the bills when they start rolling in." Classic and timeless! Great video!
Those little beetles are alot of fun ! Had a 1971 with a 1600, GT exhaust, I sold 3 years ago ! My oldest sons first car ! Sounded & run great !
I've never seen some one virtually do every bit of restoration from motor to spraying, to upholstery......You're a talented man......Well done!
That was superb entertainment. Thanks you to you and your family. Your tenacity knows no bounds. It takes me 3 days to think about checking my brakes.
Hello - greetings from germany - the Volkswagen country - i watched your video with a smile. I was 18 years old ( now i am 52 ) fresh and proud owner of a driving license. My first car was a 72 Beetle and i had a lot off work to get the german TÜV - but it was never half so good as your work! You did a great job on your beetle and it was very nice to watch your video - well done - very well done!
Uber bug
As a former owner of a 1955 bug and a 1972 bug this brought back a lot of good memories. Great restoration! Very well done!
This project looks like it took lots of love and lots of beer! Fantastic video and the results speak for itself. Beautiful. Thank you for sharing!
You have given me the 'bug' to start restoring ! Fantastic video. Brilliant restoration.
Vincent O' Brien PUN CITY!!!!!!!!!
"After some tricks about lubricating the rubber I was able to get it in". Good one.
Yes right? But he did not destroy the first windshield. :D
That's what i learned from my girlfriend when i was very young and naive.
LOL 😂
You took it somewhere else...😄
One of the best VW Beetle Restorations I've seen. The Restorer seems to be a cool guy, with a good attitude, throughout the build, other than breaking a Windshield. Cool Music Score, used on the build too.
Boy do I still get teary eyed missing my 71 Super Beetle!
Just getting started on my 68 bug restoration journey! Thanks for the inspiration!
Did you finished it?
A guy with a beer in his hand talking about the car he fully restored. Who doesn't love that :) Great video man. Loved it.
I see a bloke holding a bottle of pisswater
Awesome job and a great movie. Everything became really inspiring thanks to the way of filming and telling the story. I was impressed by painting the car in the garage instead of a spray painting booth, it all looked so simple.
I know you've probably read and heard this many times before but I found this video personally inspiring.. I owned a 1969 bug. Purchased in 1970. It was the car I owned when I met my wife of 47 years. I loved it, even though I suffered through the hardship of not being very handy. I so admired your patience and determination. Thank you for posting this. You've given much joy to this 70 year old former Chicago resident and 15 year resident of Arizona. Stay well, happy and positive. God bless you and your family.
You sir are a genius! The attention to detail is off the chart. Absolutely loved to before and after shots.
Stop
Love the ragtop. My dad had a bug with the rag top. I remember him cranking that thing open on a sunny day back in the early 1970s when I was about 5. Nothing but blue sky. The pop out back windows brought back some memories of sitting in the back seat. Nice job!
Beautiful Beetle! May be the only 68 around with a fabric sunroof. Super color coordination, and blacked-out rims.
I had a blue bug in the 80's and then a red one a few years later when I had two young children. Even put seatbelts in the back for them. This was a gorgeous reno. Very well done, and thank you for sharing.
You restored a whole car by yourself. That’s CRAAAZY! Such a Beautiful finish👌🏽
This is one of the most durable engines ever made. In the early 80's I was stationed in West Berlin and as I arrived another solider was going back to the states, he found out I was inbound and asked me if I wanted to buy a car for $25 dollars and it was the car I drove for 3 years there.
A car for 25 dollar ....it is a burgeoning market
my uncle found one in germany with the keys on. It was working. He used while he was there and then left it again.
When that engine fired i smiled as if it was mine. I have a 1972 super beetle that i need to start restoring. Thanks for video it warmed my heart to get started. I always wanted a bug in late 70 when i surfed ever day. Finally got one 45 years late. Better late tha never. I might pull surf broad out and ride a few waves. God bless. Thanks again
I can't find the right words to express my appreciation to you for your knowledge, and your work ethic ! There is NO comparison between the tv rebuild shops and 'you r' drive way restoration ! You are a 5 star operation ! I hope there are others that watch your video, and appreciate your work and knowledge as much as I do !
When you consider all the skills necessary to do this restoration, I'm just amazed at the talent! Nice work!
A truly great restoration. It leaves me with a satisfied but envious feeling. Does the World need anything better or more simple than a car like that?
Incredible Bug, sunroof rag top is a huge bonus, the low back seats, new upholstery, head liner and sound deadening all fantastic. It's a dream car now. I love your videos.
This video, this restoration of a beautiful old bug is heart rendering. I bought a new VW Super Beetle in 1973, it was my first car and I loved it. I have wished my entire life that I didn't sell, I've missed that car so much. I pray someday before too long I can duplicate this video and rebuild a 1973 Super Beetle I hope to find in not too terrible a condition. Thank you for bringing back the memories of my beautiful 1973 yellow Super Beetle.
Stop grog barking
Man!!! That is where knowledge, skill, time and patience really comes together to make something awesome again. I am so impressed. Completely worth the 45 minutes I spent watching it. I'd like to know the total amount invested by the time you were finished.
Give a man a tool , a beer , a peace of mind and see what he does ! Thanks for sharing.
WOW! What a fantastic video!! Please don't beat yourself up too much over breaking the front windshield. A number of years ago, I built a replica of a 427 Cobra roadster and broke the windshield when installing it. Then, if that wasn't enough, I scratched the paint getting it back out. Hey, it happens to the best of us. Again, I love this video. I will be referring back many times over the course of restoring my 1975 Beetle.
Congratulations on the rebuild! Its like the car rolled off the VW factory assembly line! I can’t believe this is literally a brand new 1968 Beetle! I just love how it looks and runs. A top notch professional job. This is a classic that has new life breathed into it. 👍 😃
AMAZING!!! I'm going to restore the bug that my grandpa left me, and this was the motivation and example I needed. Thanks.
+omvg93 keep the motivation on! Hope to have a chance to see your car soon.
So... Where is the restored buggy?? We would love to see it please.
my favorite part was the engine teardown !! you showed everything. you are very professional! from top to bottom great build
Excellent job. I had a 67 bug and i loved that car.. When our third child came along I had to trade it in. Wish I still had it.
As satisfying & rewarding as a full car restoration is, man oh man it's an enormous amount of tedious, exhausting work. You did a truly fantastic job!!!!
This is one of the bravest restoration projects I've seen so far, great job Ed. The roof opening and lining seems the most difficult though.
Ed, thank you So much for video taping and sharing this,,,,,, adventure. Reminds me of my 65 & 69 Bugs back in the 70's & 80's, when I was young.!!
You now have a beautiful, magnificent Beetle! Your know-how and patience are admirable. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Привет из России! 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩👍👍👍👍. Я служил в ГДР. Мне очень нравился старый жук! Спасибо за воспоминания! Жук просто красавец! И вам уважение за терпение в своей работе. 👍
This is an AMAZING piece of art. I loved every minute of it!
Hello from Scotland! Great video. Your determination was admirable. The best thing about this video,..... just you a normal guy, in your garage at home, toolbox in hand with a passion!! It's a wee shame we didn't get to see your wife drive the car in the final few seconds of the video though hahaha 😊
Hello from Birmingham, England, UK. I salute your technical ability & your passion on this project. Thank you.
I take my hat off to you. What an extraordinary job you did transforming your Beetle. It is a beautiful car now in every way. I just recently bought my first Beetle and am obsessed with it. Thank you for inspiring me to transform mine. You should be proud of what you achieved.
AWESOME 👏 ... I WATCHED THIS TILL THE END!.. IT JUST GOES TO SHOW THAT YOU DON’T NEED ALL THE EXPENSIVE GEAR & THE FLASH BIG BUILDING TO DO THIS TYPE OF WORK..
The quality of this restoration is the best I've seen in years and I've seen just about every restoration show there is. Great job. May GOD continue to bless you.
LOVE me some VW Bugs! Great video! One of the best restoration videos I’ve ever watched. Thanks for sharing this with us.
What a fantastic job. Great narration.
What a fantastic job!! You got a virtually new bug! Reminds me so much of my first car, a 67 with a 1500 cc engine. Still miss its straightforward simplicity after so many years.
@John Schenon Aber Natürlich!
Absolutely love the color scheme, inside and out. Great job, sir!
This video reminisced about my 68 Bug and many fond memories during those tender years. Thanks!
This is a great build! The bug is one of my favorites cars. The Bug, The Mustang, The Corvette of that period.
You are extremely talented. Amazing work.
I plan on being a mechanic/restorer of old volkswagon vehicles, so i thank you for posting this. really lovely transformation and the end result is so lively!
My goodness. Is there anything this guy can’t fix. Wish you were my neighbour, I would be there every day learning from you. Good music too. God bless
Thank you for being such a wonderful person as to rescue an old, beat-up, volkswagon beetle that nobody wanted; spending your time, money, and effort to resurrect it; bringing it to a whole new, wonderful life!! Plus, I think Bugs are cute and cool.....
My favorite part was when the audio would kick back in.
Jajaja me too!
it looked like the audio cut out during some timelapses. He used music during many of the other timelapses, so my guess is that the muted parts had copyrighted music that youtube didn't like.
So I didn't need to mess with my volume after all.???🤣
My favorite part was when the video finished.
@@zachlidl exactly
This video is insanely underviewed. Only 8,6 mil in 10 years?! This video is awesome.
I had a '68, I loved it and it was great to see what you did to get this back into shape. The Volkswagen legacy still survives thanks to guys like you. Thanks for sharing your videos.
Wow! This is from 2013! You got the garage of my dreams with the CJ5, the Miata, the F-150 and now the fully restored Bug. Great job! I hope you're still enjoying all those beauties.
You just blew me away....respect for the hard work... people like u produce real gold .. love your video.
Mr. Ed you have a god-like pair of hands when it comes to cars. Beautiful restoration!
Even the simplest of cars are not simple when you see the details!! The people's car, Kafer. Amazing restore.
I like how almost every time you're talking to the camera and not working on the car you're drinking beer. That's an vital ingredient to every car project.
Amazing restoration , i never have seen an incredible video like this, and you are totally perfect restorer, from the frame to the engine, from the bodywork to the upholstery and ending with an infinite patience with so much intelligence, a compliment for the excellent work you have done.
Now that was worth my time watching. What an amazing job. You have the patience of a professional. I never knew how much there was to restoring a car like that. I understand the price tag to those type projects now. And I do think they are worth it. I had a 57 Beetle back in 1069 when I was in Germany and loved it Plus a BMW Isetta. I will be getting both of those in the near future and dream about my younger years. Thank you for all your time and patience in doing that and letting all see how it was done.
Good job! I recall with fondness my 1st car, a 1961 VW Beetle. I enjoyed watching this video, from the Philippines!
Great Job for an old Man, You treat the old bug like a Lady, my highest appreciation Sir.
Verrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyy good restoration. It looks so good. Great job. It's good to see another old classic given a new lease of life. Enjoy it.
Eddie, this is truly an amazing and stunning great job. Very well done !!!! I also like the colour of the interior and the color you choose for the car. Again, great job.
MY FAVORITE PART......He puts the steering column in upside down.....I am sure he figured that out a few minutes later.
I restored a 79’ and the floor pan on mine is almost gone when I got it, its amazing to see your beat still got almost all of the floor pan intact, nice build 👍
He should have, replaced the floor pan.
I had a '70 and it was rock solid. I also had a '72 and the floor pans were all but gone. Both had been in the same midwestern town since new (this was back in the '80s), so I wonder if something changed with VW's steel in the early '70s.
@@saintkevin5286 there was nothing wrong with it
Ed thanks so much for your efforts. It brings back so many memories for the 70s. Aloha and mahalo nui loa, Konaboyz Honolulu, Hawaii
Thanks for the shout-out from Honolulu. Our latest project is a 1961 Austin Healey sprite that lived it's life in Honolulu. See Bugeye sprite restoration. Ed
Nice work indeed. I've had a few, '69 AutoStick, '73 & '74 Super Beetle. I've missed every one of them. You brought back lots of memories.
Für mich immer noch eins der schönsten Autos die gebaut wurden und auch gut Restauriert. Wirklich gut gemacht. Danke das sie dem kleine ein neues Leben geschenkt haben und Danke für eins der besten gemachten Videos.
Thank you for saving this old Bug. Could have easily been crushed and forgotten. I hope the '67 I had is still on the road.
Odds are good, 67 is a desired year amongst beetle fans... lots of 1 year only bits in it.. many in the vw crowd refer to it as the 67 mafia
👌 you're giving me the inspiration to restore my factory A/C 1966 Corvair Monza 4 door hardtop. It's in decent shape but could use an interior and exterior refresh. Awesome job, enjoy the car!! Long live air-cooled cars!!!
The corvairs shared interior bits I think with the Buick skylark or maybe Skyhawks of that era... my son has a 63 corvair convertible.
Great job. I had a 1968 VW that was painted Plum Crazy Metallic Purple when I was in high school. Fond memories.
You need a blasting hood to keep the blasting media out of your ears. Love the video. Great job man.
