He’s also lost 2 battles which is something we haven’t seen from Rick as he nearly seemed untouchable. The scene ends with him all alone and finally losing his control over the family

I think the arc is Morty's independence. He caused a lot of adventures this season. Death crystals are a result of him actively disobeying Rick, dragon was Morty's idea, Morty bought story train at Citadel (dimensional travel without Rick being aware), even time traveling snakes are a result of Morty flying into space on his own. This season shows that Morty is now well adjusted to Rick's world and way of life and does pretty much the same as his grandpa. Morty uses gadgets on his own, travels between dimensions on his own. I think one episode will be about Morty's invention. This will be the point Rick will lose control over Morty.
what if his independence is leading to how he became evil morty, or this morty just so happens to be stumbling down the same path to how evil morty became to be or something

Supported by the fact that morty is starting to question Ricks inventions and ideas, and he even starts to control rick at some points, like when he tricks rick into making a save point device by continuing to question Ricks intelligence and despite the fact that Rick points it out, it still works.

Maybe evil Morty was the first Morty to become disillusioned with our Rick and this is Rick's second attempt at fitting in. Or maybe he's been doing it for years. Maybe the citadel is really just a glorified old person's home for Ricks that gave up on trying to stay relevant in their daughter's lives.
That would be a decent plot-twist that I unlike most would love. Maybe there are other people out there who can travel between dimensions like Rick. Maybe there's a whole secret society between dimensions, and Rick is just the cranky old guy of that society

@Devilikg I mean so many people think that Evil Morty is Rick's original Morty that at this point everyone would be super disappointed if it's not the case, but I haven't heard anyone say the thing about the citadel before so if I repeated something you've read that's my bad. But launching off of the evil Morty idea, most people assume that this is Rick's FIRST time attempting to actually be a caring grandpa to a Morty, but if it turns out he's been trying and failing for a long time that would add a layer of depth that I would sort of like to see. Something something change is hard, boom big lesson.

What if Rick see the fact that his family leaves him and when he end up being alone we will get a back story of what made him the way he is , what happens with his wife and from where his problem with control comes from ???? I am putting my money on that as the previous episode and season speck for them self . As you go from S 1 to S 4 you can see that everything has to do with Rick and his past .

The fact the family may be leaving Rick behind may have been some of Evil Morty's plan. If Ricks can't maintain their status quo, of their family dynamic, their relationship with Morty, keeping Summers not radicalized, their dominance and hierarchy, then it all falls apart. Morties were meant to just be with Ricks, until Evil Morty changed that, "Rick and Morty for nine seasons/forever" Was what Rick wanted, but now we see that dream starting to fail, and I think Evil Morty was the first to be disillusioned with Rick, and his goal is to end Rick's power in the universe forever. Back when we first saw him, Evil Morty said it was pointless to try to fight back against Evil Rick, as no Morty could ever defeat a Rick. I for a time, thought he said that because he was controlling Evil Rick and didn't want him gone, and that may be true, but there's more to it. He truly believed that a Morty could never stop a Rick, and that's why he made Evil Rick, but Our Morty opened his eyes and showed him that together the Morties were strong, strong enough to stop this, and so he changed his plan. No more using a fake Rick, he would gain power through the Morties, drop into their Sodom, rise from the ashes with their backing, and use them from there to end the reign of Ricks throughout the universe. C137 was just the first universe, if Ricks have no families in any universe to go to nor the Citadel, they have no where left to run Edit: Wow, 129 upvotes, that is by far the most I've ever received.

I saw this theory after seeing the new episodes of the fourth season. Do you think this theme of loneliness is confirmed throughout the season? In the first episode, of which you have already made a theory it seems that there is no theme of loneliness, but a criticism of the fandom and all the others seem to want to analyze the characters' psychology again. in episode 7 Rick and Morty talk about their relationship and how Morty wants to communicate with Rick, much more. in 8 they fight badly and at some point Morty says "maybe we should try to get more in communication ", In Episode 9, Rick and Beth get much closer than ever. Maybe this season wants to highlight how the relationship between Rick and Morty is extremely weak, one day they seem close together, other days they seem complete completely hostile. Rick must show his control and although the family suffers a detachment he is deeply influenced by Rick. in the end Rick does what he wants, gets what he wants and has control over everything and everyone. He Always win Somehow.

Personal Fan Theory Rick and Morty is a scifi tabletop game being animated, if you look at Dan Harmon's other show Harmon Quest you'll notice significantly similar writing styles (albeit significantly dumbed down) so to skim my thought process, Rick, Morty, Jerry, Beth, and Summer are the core PCs or player characters and opening your mind to that you start to realize slowly that alot of the plot starts to follow DND tropes and escapades and that the reason it might be getting delayed is the campaign its based on has been dying out. Also that each episode is like a session that gets recorded then goes through more advanced editing before being made into a RnM episode.

The arc of S4 is Rick being more human and Morty being more like him.
specially with that dating app episode, you see morty talking to jerry in the same manner that rick does for the first time ever.

The time travel surprised me too, especially considering the circumstance in which time travel was mentioned before : Rick bringing a pizza and explaining that he hadn't used time travel. I had assumed that it meant that time travel was impractical or something like that. But apparently not...

@cheesyvin I thought so at first, but... It still presents time travel as something which is possible, practical and useful, though also very likely to be misused. Judging time travel only from that episode, it seems that : the problem is not that time travel itself is absurd/paradoxical/unreliable/etc, the problem is that time travel is often put to absurd/paradoxical uses. Case in point : the time agents get rid of the problem by going back in time far enough to prevent the snakes from evolving too much. Time travel problem fixed with time travel. I am not saying that it was a mistake to present time travel in this way. What I am saying is that I have no idea what they were going for with this, what point they were trying to make (beyond pointing that people often use it stupidly). I had been hoping for something more if time travel was ever to happen. Maybe something in the spirit of the heist episode, with a crazy parody of stein's gate and other time-travel shows instead of heist movies ? Anyway, now that time travel has happened, it feels a bit underwhelming.

Kinda Unrelated, but my sister had a little theory that Space Everest was actually just Everest. That it is part of the earth Space Tourism board from when earth was taken over by the Galactic Government. Her theory is that even though the Government is gone, Aliens still come to earth for vacation and dumb people like Jerry have named everything "Space ---" to try to appeal to Aliens. I think it's a pretty funny theory and I like it, because through her version; Tony went to earth looking for Rick after doing a bit of detective work of his own, but decided to go skiing first. Tony died on the same planet as Rick, basically just next door and Rick never knew. His friend just wanted to Space Ski down Space Everest while drinking some Space Egg Space Nog with Space Cinnamon on top. Space.

Well, not that easily. Maybe emotionally easily, but finding dimension where a Rick just died is not that easy. It's even harder now, once Operation Phoenix made pretty much all Ricks immortal.
After watching the finale, this theory is, in a way, correct. Rick isn't kicked out by the Smith family, but he is no longer the de-facto patriarch he set himself up to be in the Season 3 premiere. Without spoiling anything, the family doesn't care about his scientific discoveries/inventions anymore and have found other things to focus on, leaving Rick alone in the garage/lab, which had always been his safe haven, and now it's a reminder of all he has lost, and what little he has left, and he now realizes how bad he really is in a way that's utterly vulnerable and human. The previous times he acknowledged his wrongdoings, they've always been a catalyst for his cynical, nihilistic view of the universe and used this indifference as a justifiable means for his actions. In the finale, however, he has absolutely nothing to back him up; he's just a really f*cked up person who made awful decisions with big consequences. This season truly was The End of the Rick Sanchez we knew and, ironically, loved.

I don't believe it's the end of Rick. This end of season 4 when Tammy said he's not a theat I think it set something off in him
I almost think that IF he goes through a huge change or character arc he won't be Rick anymore... which I'm a little nervous about...
I think season 4 theme is about how rick is disconnected emotionally and he try really hard to keep them deep down and every time it comes to the surface he pushes it down again

Things aren't predictable and static, the universe is plastic and, unless you have all the information in the universe, its unpredictable due to chaos theory

My theory: At the end of this season Rick is going to go through a portal to yet another dimension, and knock on another Beth’s front door, and start season 1 all over again, leaving the audience to wonder how many times he’s done this. Also you should do hiimmarymary part 2.

Def my same theory! Like the show has just been yet another sad attempt to be loved by his family. Just to screw it all up somewhere along the line. He clones so often and has so much knowledge, it really seems like he's been around much longer than one human life. Maybe this time around he'll find out no amount of knowledge/intelligence can give him a perfect life.

Why season 4 was great
Season 3 and 4 were great! Season 2 has 2 or so episodes I really liked, the others were okay. Season 1 was okay. But I actually really like where all this is going :)

I can imagine Morty leaving with Rick at the end of season 4, leading into a season 5 focused on just their adventures. I can see this happening as Rick continues to manipulate Morty to the point that Morty feels like running away with Rick is in his best interest.

I would actually watch that. I’m really not enjoying season 4. I hate Jerry, I hate Jessica, I hate Trisha, I just want space adventures and the citidel. No more dysfunctional family bullshit, no more romance subplots with bland characters, no more Dragonheart fanfiction.
I can see it happening that Morty actually ends up killing and becoming Rick, and discovers it was all just a giant cycle.
