I really got to thinking after watching episode 7 of Rick and Morty season 4, 'Promortyus'. Those alien facehuggers posed a very interesting question, but maybe not the one you were thinking. See, their evolution as a society to find more meaning brought them to peace - even if it was only a ploy by Summer. Yet, it didn't last. What does this have to say about us all and our pursuit of more? Let's find out!

  • After the season four finale I realized rick doesn’t jump universes because he doesn’t care about his family. He jumps universes because his family stops caring about him

  • The whole "life is depressing without meaning" thing is something Ive only recently come to realize myself, despite hearing it constantly. For awhile I became obsessed with progress, and any moment I wasn't improving or saw things weren't improving i just got sad and depressed, but what ive finally started seeing now is that sometimes the lack of progress is what makes life fun. The fun and joy of life doesn't come from mastering all skills, but rather from fine tuning the skills you enjoy the most. Ive towed both lines of thinking before, as a kid I didn't improve myself at all and just coasted on what came naturally to me. As a teenager I thought progress was all that mattered, and now im finally opening up to a world of both. Changing and growing but still staying grounded in what i love the most.

    @AustinD_YT@AustinD_YT2 жыл бұрын
  • Tbh Rick's depression hits pretty deep with me even though I know he's all fictional and I truly believe that when you look at the big picture you will be depressed and know that life does not matter to the universe but how to truly be happy is ignore that and focus on the small things while looking at the big picture If you desire

    • The universe not caring about itself or others means it's more imperative to try to make things as best we can for everyone because it benefits us too. What makes me unhappy is that we do not work towards this goal, not enough yet. Neither our system nor our societal education leads to a fruitful life. The universe isn't the problem, it's our lack of societal evolution that is.

  • See, the thing about the birthrates in our society is actually really interesting, people who, can prevent something they can't afford will do so to preserve themselves and what they love. That being said, one new child is infinitely more expensive than simply keeping the children you already have or staying childless. this is the same with marriages, Taxes are higher if you're married to someone with a much larger income than your own, and the other way around. Which limits the pool of people available to any one person, that or they would stay living together but divorce legally. Therefore the "marriage rate" in the number we can track is lower, I can't say how much but it is lower due to the number not being tracked by a given numerical value than the amount of people who consider themselves to be married. Society is filled with rules and constrictions on things that make us happy which is a real shame, but it's that way for the sake of "progress".

It is usually cover up for intellectual lazies and conformism, based on presumption that old order is "natural" and everything what we don't like isn't. But here is a thing. Sentience itself is by its nature unnatural, as it is tool developed for breaking laws of the nature which by the way don't care if it is or isn't natural itself. On top of that whole point of natural selection is survival of the fittest with sentience being actually one of greatest tools of survival, exactly because it allow breaking laws of nature limiting survivability. In this sense AI is actually a natural evolution of biologic life, with denial of it being in this sense unnatural. So yeh, naturalism is actually unnatural ergo a nonsense.

  • Anyone watching this realize that the entire biological system these parasites use results in a zero sum system? One parasite attaches to a host, develops one egg with one parasite within, and then kills the host. That means that the species is doomed to extinction anyway as they can't actually add to their own numbers. Parasites in the real world produce huge numbers of individual offspring as the likelihood of a single one of them reaching reproduction is unlikely based solely on the odds of an individual offspring finding the right host and not being killed. For parasitoid organisms (those that only live part of their lives inside a host such as jeweled wasp or a tarantula hawk), they are more K selective as they ensure their offspring are given a substantial meal while they develop to their adult form, but they lay more than one egg and remove more than one of their hosts from the equation of the environment. Also how would these parasites have a family? They are seemingly asexual reproductive and as stated die after reproducing. This biologically doesn't actually make any sense.

Quick question though. When they compare depression rates from now to ones further back do they take into account how much more often people had mental illnesses (like depression) went untreated and diagnosed due to how much worse public education of depression was and the less than favorable public opinion of theory back then? Or am I incorrect in assuming how much of an impact that would have? Just wondering to be honest. Keep doing what you do and I wish we saw Austin more!

And when the medical system is garbage they need to have even more kids, so there's a greater chance, that at least one of them survives until adulthood. People, that are free from these worries, tend to have less or even no children, so they can focus on the things, that actually make them happy.

  • This reminds me of an overlooked issue in the world of the Arc of a Scythe series. For context, Arc of a Scythe takes place in a future where it is possible to bring someone back from the dead. It is mentioned in book one by a major character in a journal entry that she sees many people suffering from what she calls "stagnation". Because people can no longer die (at least naturally), there isn't anything that you can do that is worthwhile. So people may feel like their lives are meaningless with nothing lasting their immortality and as a result suffer from "stagnation" in growing numbers.

  • As a genz I can tell you that all we want is to be happy and we can’t be happy till everyone is happy. We see all the discrimination and pain in the world and we feel is our job to speak on it. That’s partly why we’re so unhappy. We are also self aware is to the issues in our own lives and are not willing to just sit around and be complacent. We don’t agree with the way our parents raised us so due to our traumatic childhoods we don’t want to raise children. I’m personally ace but even if I adopted I don’t want my life to revolve around someone else, plus I don’t know how to raise a child. I was raised so wrong that I’m scared I’ll do the same as my parents.

    • not a philosoophy student but did a few philosophy readings throughout uni. philosophy is really all about how well can you form a logical train of thought, how well do you justify that logic, etc. it makes you think carefully about WHY you agree or disagree with ideas so instead of just saying "i don't like this" you have to really dissect the argument and back up your opinion with evidence. these critical thinking skills are really important especially if you spend a lot of time on the internet. if you like philosophy when it's related to something you're familiar with Wisecrack's channel

    • Bad, this video just goes over the very basics of this, but imo it's more important to learn practical things, so if you decide to learn more about this, think about how you can use it to better yourself and society. Thoughts without action become terrible, nihilism isnt the answer.

      @torrestricks9901@torrestricks99014 жыл бұрын
    • I'd say it's bad, but not entirely your fault. Your usual high school philosophy class is more concerned with you learning that some asshole called Heraclitus said that fire is life than actually teaching to think. I have learned more philosophy from actually overthinking shows and movies and comics and all that than from classes. Thinking about stories and trying to figure out what they are trying to tell us on a deeper level is frowned upon by the binge culture we live in. Few people that I know go beyond what they see on screen and instead look for the next thing to watch. An excellent example is Blade Runner 2049. Most of my family and friends who watched it were more concerned about the length of the movie and that they'd not watch it again than if replicants can be considered people and the superiority complex of the ruling class. So, try to stop and think more about what you just watched and you'll see how much you start philosophizing and understanding things on a deeper level. It's applied philosophy, if you will, and much more effective than memorizing what your teachers told you to. Also, I'm not saying that binge culture is inherently bad, but there should be a healthy balance between watching a show in one day, and stopping for a second and think about the episode you just watched.

There's plenty of things that advertise themselves as natural when they have artificial flavors in them, etc. Your belief that 'organic' means 'better for the environment' is exactly what the fallacy is referring to. Its way more complex than that, and you'd have to do a lot of research on individual methods and companies etc to TRULY know which is the better choice for the world in your mind in the end. Honestly? Grow your own food if you want to worry about being better for the environment. Trying to listen to packaging manipulation to do that is just never gonna work out.
