Taps

2012 ж. 24 Мам.

Twenty-four notes. It's a simple melody, 150 years old, that can express our gratitude when words fail. Taps honors the men and women who have laid down their lives and paid the ultimate sacrifice for the cause of freedom. Fair winds and following seas, shipmates.
This version of taps was recorded by the United States Navy Band at the following locations:
Display Ship Barry, Washington Navy Yard
U.S. Navy Memorial, Washington, D.C.
Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

  • i was 16 years old when i had to play this at my grandpas funeral. he was a veteran and when he was in the hospital, this was our last conversation. the last thing he asked me was to be the trumpet player to play taps at his funeral. this was the hardest thing i have ever had to do. god bless anyone who ever does the same.

    • my grandpa died 6 days ago, today was his funeral, he was veteran in the airforce, and this song played at the end of the funeral and the song is so sad, I wasn't super close to him, but seeing those who were, would make me really sad. his friends in the army, crying as they walk out, his friends crying. Today was a very sad day.

  • What i find most suffocating about Taps is the silence. It's just one man, one trumpet, honoring the fallen. The silence being pierced by such a simple melody is somehow poetic. The struggle of these men is over. But through the darkness of death sounds out a way to a better place.

    • I would point out that the song is basically a lullaby. It's played at night to signal that it's time to sleep. I actually find it quite soothing. To play it at a funeral, your are signalling to the deceased that their work is done, that it is time to rest. Quite fitting

    • I played this many times at military funerals when I was in HS. There were always 2 players... one out front and one back behind the trees to play an echo. Christ that was tough.

    • @@esalink There is an organization in a neighboring town which conducts a service each and every Friday evening regardless of weather in the court house square for the past 800+ Fridays in which the names of any veterans who have passed in the preceeding 7 days (info gathered from many sources, it matters not where the veteran passed), active duty personnel who "crossed the bar" in that same period (anywhere in the world), first responders as well. After each name is read a bell sounds, a brief silence then the next name. At the conclusion, Taps is played by three buglers at different corners of the sqare in "echo". It is very emotional and heartwarming and I attend whenever I can.

    • What a perfectly poignant way to describe what this melody makes a person feel. It’s not sad. It’s bittersweet, sure, because it usually means you won’t be seeing someone for a while. But it’s a beacons of hope, too. A reminder through the silence that it’s just time to sleep for a while.

If there was a picture of gung-ho, this would be the guy. When I heard this at his service, it was surreal, heartbreaking to see him being lowered into the ground to rest. • Freedom's song blows in the wind. If you are quiet and still, you can hear the movements of those who served our country rushing past you, through the course of history. As you listen, there is a sense of permanency- in the rightness of their service to defend America, the home of the free. Let freedom ring! "Liberty and justice for all" blows through the breeze, as freedom's song rings in our ears... as we remember and give homage to the brave heart... the leader with courage beyond what we can imagine, with decisions made in a split second that were built from years and years of character built and established deep in the soul of the man... What a privilege to hear this song, with pride and thanksgiving in our hearts to those who have served us and gave their lives for us, as well as those who are still fighting and defending, and spreading the hope of democracy to an oppressed world. God bless the USA and have mercy on us, Lord. Amen.

The attendees at your funeral was twice tha amount that the Catholic Church could hold. You were loved and respected by many people in our town. I stood in a small pool of tears that I cried for you near your casket. You always gave me wise advice and I think you did because you knew and was surprised that I was a bit different from the others in more ways than one.
