It's been like that since the 1950s when guards would accidently fire their guns and wound people. Their bayonets could possible be sharpened. And they could also use their empty rifle as a baseball bat too. But the only one with ammo is a supervisor with a pistol

As an Army veteran, I know I'd rather be assigned combat duty behind enemy lines than to have to do their duty. But their honorable service makes me proud to be an American !

    • Plenty of those ARE tourists from the country itself. Some others may not be aware they are disrespecting anything. The path the queens guards take are not marked. It seems some were not aware they were standing in the way. That first couple who trespassed might be foreigners who could not speak English and did not understand the orders nor where they should go. Even being American, they still seemed really at a loss to where they should go

Real life shows that people many times become unaware or their surroundings, even loud noises, when paying attention to something else. Example, your CHILDREN when watching a cartoon. The average husband when his wife starts talking about her day at work. People who get run over by cars, despite cars making noise and sometimes even honking their horn before collision. Those people are in a noisy environment. They hear the soldiers but they are concentrated on their tasks or sights. They are not aware the soldiers are screaming at them until the last moment. At 4:10 the soldiers ONLY scream at the old man AFTER throwing him at the ground. They could have screamed earlier, clearly did not do so just to scare him.

Served in that unit for over five years. #1 you have to be selected from the rest of the Army to serve in this unit. #2 you have to be selected to serve as a Tomb Guard from the unit. #3 the Old Guard is one of the highest awarded units in the military which consists of soldiers from all parts of the Army, Airborne, Rangers, SF. At the very least to serve in the unit one must be in the Infantry #4 its a detail, not a career position. 3 years is the average posting time before the soldier moves on to a different unit.

  • I actually had the honor of laying a wreath on the tomb of the unknown soldier when I was in middle school . I walked up to the tomb slowly and respectfully with the 2 of the guards in unison and in synch . Placed the wreath and walked back to my classmates . It was an honor

Guard duty is very serious business and some people think it's a game. What a shame. I would love to see the British Royal Guards and The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier - but respectfully.

If his post is challenged, he will most definitely stand his ground with lethal force if necessary as it states in his 11th general order. If you think an active duty personnel won’t use lethal force when necessary, you should go try it and let me know how that works out for you.

  • When I visited London I very much enjoyed watching the changing of the guards. I also loved see them guarding. They were amazing sometime I wanted to check and make sure they were breathing they were do dyolly. They never yelled at anyone of us in my family there were 12 of us but, we also were not rude and respected them. It is their military would you do that in the US to anyone in our military working? I enjoyed watching them it watching actually pretty cool..I even liked their uniforms. They were extremely dedicated to their job. Just like any military would be. They are trained and have to go through severe training. It isn't easy and not all men pass it..

  • Some people DO NOT understand respect! I live in the U.S. and would never act the way some childish people act. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, you stand in complete silence and never cross the ropes. I cherish our soldiers and would never disrespect them. The same for the Guards in England.

  • they are there to protect. they look ceremonial, but they are doing their jobs and don’t mess around. they give ample warnings and will defend themselves as well as HRH and their deceased brothers.

  • I had a job 25 years in law enforcement and I can totally identify what a drag it is working in the public. You always end up with one or two people in every crowd that seems to want to test you.

  • As an Englishman I can say with one hundred percent confidence, that we always find it funny when we see a tourist get yelled at to moves, whilst watching the tourist complain that the guard are far to rude. I remember so many occasions where I was wheezing so hard due to their reaction to being moved out of the way forcefully.

I used to be a Candidate for HONOR GUARD, couldn't make it. The Level of requirements, Physical criteria, discipline, Knowledge and some other things were extraordinary. Some people just see how beautiful the uniforms are, but they dont realize the cost of it. That's the point, THE COST of being a GUARD.

    • There is, they are in the crowd and around the grounds. Also there are off duty sententials in the crowd. The one marching doesn't normally do more then issue verbal warnings. If it gets to out of control then the standbys jump in.

They are hero warriors, and USA allies. Don't mess around or be plain stupid. Respect there and America's Historical Monuments. As our "Tomb of our unkown Soldier." Dont disrespect it for it may be your very own Uncle they are Guarding! Be reverent, quite, mannerly, and kind...that is the people's duty.   • Have been to Britain a number of times. These soldiers are the best of the best and they represent and defend the people with everything they have. Put it this way you don't go and mess around with a police officer walking down the street do you? It's all pomp and display and it encourages that behaviour. It shouldn't but it does. So my suggestion is do away with the silly tradition and just focus on the job.
