    • THIS, I was getting my nails done at a Korean run place, but as a Caucasian in Australia, obvi, they spoke in English to me. The 1st 30 mins of my appointment was quiet and my nail tech didn't seem to want to have small talk with me, then I randomly asked her if it had been busy lately in Korean and she lightened up, asked me about my Christmas plans and seemed a lot more comfortable in general. Honestly, my biggest advice is, if you know you're entering a business run/staffed with people that all speak the language you're learning, (if you're comfortable) speak it from the start, if not, do what this guy does and slide it into the conversation to test the waters.

    • Well, you should remember one thing here. While yes it was A LOT of money, there is another reason for them trying their best to give it back; It is considered VERY rude in most of China to accept a gift if you haven't refused to take it *at least* 3 times. Heck some places you basically have to staple the gift to the person and run away so they can't give it back. Usually there is an exception for New Years gifts, but in this case it was probably too much for them to accept it as a regular new years gift.

That's incredible, and your videos have inspired me to retry learning a new language. Thank you for being a positive force in YT; especially with your video during COVID, my close friend is from Korea and I would wait for her at the train stop we both took to class, and ride with her back to her car because the issues were so indiscriminate at those times it was better safe than sorry sadly enough. But things have gotten better and thank you for all the amazing and uplifting/inspiring content? Dankeschön mein Freund!

      @willmhooper9715@willmhooper97153 ай бұрын
    • @@willmhooper9715 I've been using a couple of different things. Pimsleur has been the main course, and I did it every day for about 6 months until I finished the 6 lesson plans. I supplemented it with a lot of free Chinese vocab resources (youtube videos on colloquial phrases, free online flashcards, etc). I live in a major city, and once I started feeling confident in it, I enrolled myself in a once-a-week course at a local college for intermediate mandarin. I also work an in industry where quite a few of my coworkers are Chinese, either immigrants or first generational, and have a few friends as well that speak it, and my colleagues/friends are always willing to have me practice with them over lunch or when we hang out. The two biggest things that have helped me are 1. Prioritizing consistency. Just do the lessons every day, even if you don't want to. I just made sure to do my lessons and PAID for Pimsleur so I would feel more obligated to do it. Also, if you're in a community or live in an area where there is a population that speaks Chinese, try to make a semi-routine of using the language there and asking for feedback. If you're humble and show interest, people tend to respond with respect and helpfulness and you get "real-world" experience 2. Exposure to media. Watch youtube videos, even if you don't really understand them, that are in Chinese with English subtitles. You'll learn a lot of 'proper' Chinese from your coursework, but hearing people speak colloquially gives you a lot more insights on day-to-day dialogue.

    • @@willmhooper9715 hope this is still useful but if you can find places nearby that are known for their chinese population that's a good starting point for conversation and practicing. For like, studying I recommend just listening to music and watching videos in the language, that's been really helpful for me. And make "word banks", like lists of words, then group them into categories and review them every now and then. Hope this helped!!!

  • Just showing some effort in learning a community's language opens up so many avenues to meet people and accelerate your learning. Xiaoma is clearly a pro at this but even with just knowing a few words and showing interest you will instantly feel welcomed. Open yourself up to different cultures and the reward will be everlasting.

  • I work as a cashier in FL and I have many customers who speak a wide range of languages. I have always learned small bits of languages as a hobby, so I have a wide range of greetings and basics in many languages. There are many customers who are regulars specifically because of that. It really opens people up when you can speak just a little of their native tongue. It's funny too, that I speak fluent Spanish as a white guy, and I work with a 3rd generation Latino guy who doesn't know any. All the Latinos go up to him speaking Spanish for help, and he just points to me and I help them. They are always super confused and surprised. One of my customers is South African, and when I first interacted with him and heard his accent I was like, "Ag jy is 'n Afrikaner? Ek kon lanklaas Afrikaans praat." (Oh you're an African? I haven't gotten to speak Afrikaans in a long time.) and he lit up with a smile and his face was beaming. He said "I have lived in America for nearly 10 years now and you're the first person who didn't assume I was Australian or British! How did you know that I'm South African!?". I explained that White South Africans pronounce their A's way differently from Europeans and Australians since Afrikaans is a Dutch hybrid language. Now he exclusively comes to my store if he needs something. Languages are a great tool to have in everyday life.

  • Videos like these show how important it is for us to bridge cultural gaps. You can tell how immediate their comfort is when you speak in their language, plus it's so interesting how some of them speak english back almost to return the favour ^v^

  • I LOVE Wendy. Her business was definitely hurting and you can feel her gratefulness. I hope they made it through the pandemic and thank you @xiaomanyc for the blessing you gave her.
