The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Miley Cyrus has always understood that music is theater. So it's no surprise that, visiting the imaginative space that is the Tiny Desk, she transforms it into something both fantastical and true to her topsy-turvy Mileyness.
Cyrus ruled preteen hearts on the small screen before mastering pop stardom's big stages, and throughout her career she's played with sound and image in unexpected and even controversial ways. And she's never balanced pop's glorious artifice with her own soulful authenticity more self-assuredly than she does on her latest album, the rock and roll manifesto Plastic Hearts.
Here, the scene opens with Cyrus, dressed head to toe in rock-star faux fur, in what looks like a teenage girl's bedroom. But the perspective in this pink-and-purple space feels a little ... odd. As Cyrus sings, it becomes clear that this is her Wonderland - like Alice full of magical cake, she's grown to exceed her surroundings. By the end of this three-song set, Cyrus reveals that it's the adolescent enclave that grew too small for her, not the other way around.
The songs Cyrus offers are as direct and affecting as the set is whimsical. Cyrus has lately proven herself one of pop's great interpretive vocalists, and she scores another triumph with her version of Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You," a hazy psychedelic anthem that she infuses with just the edge of the next day's hangover. The two songs from Plastic Hearts that follow are her own bids at classic-rock timelessness. In "Golden G-String" Cyrus assesses her own life in the spotlight with Leonard Cohen-esque charm. And "Prisoner" is the power ballad that lets Cyrus really break out - as she leaves the tiny room - just a box, it turns out, on a soundstage - and joins her band, she's as free and self-confident as she's ever been.

Exactly
Well said..... Jesus.... she’s growing up

Her cover of "Fade into You" is exceptional.
Seriously next level
Not even trying, just comes out, fantastic
She did to Fade into you what Johnny Cash did to Hurt.
Better than the origional.
She sounds great and dressed it up nicely but it doesn't really compare to Hope singing it.
there's something so magical and mysterious about miley's voice. You can feel happy, sad, lost, and infinite all at the same time. I hope she never stops singing, she's been an inspiration to me for so long.
I started taking her seriously after 2012 when Stevie Nicks said she could be better than her one day. If you're wanting to put raw emotion into songs she is the gold standard currently.
I feel like she's embodying her Godmother. So she'll entertain us and be an icon for years to come
Saaaame

At times I swear she Janis Joplin trap in a other person body
She sounds like she's just singing right in the golden age of classic rock.

Grace Slick. The Acid Queen, without the acid. 1969 is right. And the Trump years were like Kissinger but WITH the acid. Malicious incompetence refusing to apply quarantine on COVID c/c with sabotaging the Paris Peace talks in 1968 to get Nixon in. Miley understands her world, same as Grace.
Right just looking at her I see Pat Benatar~~~
She opened singing Fade Into You... This woman knows just right what we want!
Daggone Skippy my brother!!!
Such a good song!
She’s unreal.
I dont see anyone talking about the symbolism of her backdrop. This set is extremely moving musically, but she's also seemed to put herself in a child's room or child's sized theme as a way of showing shes grown out of the way that people whove seen her in Hannah Montana think of her. She's grown so much from her childhood. She's so much bigger than that. Her sound is something we've yearned for in this age demographic. Its so unique and beautiful and shouldn't be confined to such a childlike mindset.
You think too much. It's a tiny desk concert.
Pretty sure that its just a Tiny (home) Concert joke.
@@dougdavis8986 Actually, they are correct. The backdrop is suppose to be her childhood room. She did the same thing for an Amazon winter special. It wasn't tiny like this, so it does play into the tiny desk concept but the original comment still stands. I think she also confirmed this herself
Yes well-stated, it's in the video description too
Miley’s proud of her hannah montana era.. it’s apart of the journey y’all need to chill 😂
God! Is it just me or is Miley in spite of all the fame still incredibly under appreciated??? I mean she’s channeling every rock God we’ve ever known. ⚡️
Highly under appreciated, she isn’t even mainstream at this point. None of her new stuff gets radio play and when people talk about they talk about her Bangerz era which was ten years ago! She’ll get her credit soon 🧡
I can suggest an alternative theory. She's appreciated for the wrong things. Her originals don't play to her strengths.
Don't worry because on the day when Miley eventually passes on and leaves behind an amazing legacy all the people that didn't appreciate her will wallow away in their regret and misery for not appreciating Miley sooner. I'm so happy and grateful that I've been supporting and loving this Queen since her Hannah Montana days. Plus sometimes the most underrated gems in the cave are usually the most beautiful and rarest gems you'll ever find. 👑💖💎
i feel the same!!!
Thank god she didn’t fall into the industry’s commercial wave… regardless of the numbers Miley has a very strong loyal fan base that can’t be bought with numbers ! We loved her since Hannah Montana and we forever will ❤

No wrong statement in sight
Yeah her voice is refreshing and is aging nicely, but the 80s rocker look is a no fly zone for me.
I've never really paid her much attention, and I'm a pretty big Mazzy Star fan, so I was a little worried. But, I think she did a real good job.

I’m sorry but this the BEST MILEY HAS EVER SOUNDED!! She has perfected her voice and her genre!
I’m assuming this performance didn’t have a lot of post processing and clean up. If so, her voice is amazing, far more amazing than I would have suspected from her studio work.
I remember hearing on a Joe Rogan podcast that she really tore her vocal chords from years of singing but they ripped in a special way that it gave he a more raspy voice. Kind of like when an older artist hits their prime in singing but she hit that peak at a young age because she's been preforming for so long... I can't recall what exactly she was saying but it was along those lines.... Regardless she has always had a wonderful voice.
Yess. She seems so in tune with her music these days!

Miley's voice is a force to be reconnected with. Absolutely outstanding talent. She definitely deserved her Grammy in 2024, and that's saying too little. What an absolute star.
Wow I'm blown away. This showcases just how good and how clear of a perception this woman has developed of herself. Clear references and links to Dolly Parton, yet so distinctly different; I never thought someone could transform the great Dolly into something far greater. Raw in a whole different context, whereas Dolly captures your heart, Miley captures the primal feelings. Edgy yet elegant.
