But this was the first contract running down to one year, then Nasri, Wilshere, Alexis, Ramsey and so on continued the trend of poor player and contract management. Vieira was a similar situation so is this evidence it’s more Wenger’s influence than Gazidas’?

People just forget how poor Arsenal were for 10 years and it showed numerous times on how many players were purchased and how much they spent before 2013. Best example was when alex song left for Barca because he wanted to renew his contract but they couldn't afford a renewal at the time. RVP wanted 200k and they couldn't give him that.

      @finding_aether@finding_aether4 жыл бұрын
    • @@finding_aether Cazorla was a great player but unfortunately injured too often. Also the squad had Rosicky, Wilshere or Ramsey as playmakers so the position wasn't exactly vacant. Giroud was good but was critizised year after year for not being able to keep up with the greatest strikers. Podolski had a few good games but was soon benched and offered next to nothing on the wings. In the end Arsenal let the best striker of the Premiere League leave to their greatest rivals without replacing him. This happened after their two best midfield players Fabregas and Nasri already left. My guess is that this was in a time where Wenger was obsessed with developing young players and thought Theo Walcott could be the main man. But for me it was quite a shame that a team that perhaps needed 3 more players to compete against the best teams of the world disintegrated within 2 years to become irrelevant on the big stage.

Let's not forget fans pays thousands to be able to watch the club playing, whereas the players gets paid hundreds of thousands to play for the club. So a bit loyalty goes a long way. The prime example would be Francesco Totti. I am sure RVP would've loved the same endings like Totti, so would all the Arsenal fans. He was so special in his prime. Arsenal fans can’t really be mad at him cause he still gave 8 years of his life to this club. Keep it up RVP.

  • I remember his transfer to United was predicted to be a flop as he was “old”, had only a left foot and was very injury prone. Arsenal fans said it was no loss to their team. I am shocked to read how “upset” they all were. Up till the last day of the season he was still hoping to stay at Arsenal. Then the phone call from SAF on the last day of the transfer season....the rest is history!

  • Seems like a great guy and he was without a doubt in his prime, one of the most exciting players to watch. Credit to him for staying honest and true to himself. There's so much that goes on behind the scenes and unfortunately, due to media and clever editing, us fans never truly understand or probably even appreciate the magnitude of these situations. I really empathise with Robin because this happens in the "beautiful game" all too often nowadays.

  • Van Persie is probably the player who made me fall in love with football. Such a character to come into the United setup and be THE man. It's understated but the man is a United legend for his contribution to the big number 20 and in that 2012/13 season arguably the best striker in the world on his form.
