True if Liverpool kept coming 2nd behind United for 26 years. Liverpool only truly challenged in 3 of the 26 years. So had nothing to do with Fergie. On the contrary United should thank Liverpool, because it was Fergie's obsession with Liverpool's success that drove him towards all those trophies. In someways, Liverpool was the benchmark for Ferguson's United in defining success. Liverpool Walked Alone due to some poor managers and bad transfers. Sorry had nothing to do with Fergie.

I was 7 back then and saw that game , i asked my grandfather who was that guy that ran like a bull , and my grandfater said "he is a warrior son , something that you cant understand but imagine those knights thay you are learning at school going to war ... thats Roy Keane" . From that day forward Roy was the best player in the world for me , and played with Celtic in FM 2007(i think) because of him , now has an adult i can say that Roy made me love football for the emotional part and not only for the beauty of the plays and goals . And im not even english

Sir Alex is arguably the greatest football manager. It's natural that the bar he would set would be incredibly high. But Schmeichel, Van de Sar, Stam, Vidic, Ferdinand, Keane, Beckham, Rooney, Nistelroy etc would be ranked world class by 99% of experts.
Vidic, Schmeicel, Nistelroy and Beckham were not world class. They were great players but there are levels. Keane and Stam were but Stam played for a short stint at United and Keane and Fergusson hated each other

Reading the comments, im glad to see people constantly talking about Roy Keane. I thought i was only one of a few who cherished the leader, the fighter, the warrior and the greatest captain Man United ever had. When im feeling lazy or unmotivated I watch a Roy Keane highlights video and suddenly i feel like working hard to be the best at what i do. Truly inspirational. There's only one Keano. Keane did say in the Viera documentary that the best manager he ever played for was Brian Clough. So Sir Alex was never gonna forgive that. Extremely competitive people are like that. Im sure deep down they both appreciate each other highly.

I agree with what you say about him as a leader but I don't think people give him enough credit for his technical abilities. He could have played for any team in Europe in his prime.

Keane would end up killing someone if he played football today, and it wouldn't necessarily be an opponent. Egos are huge nowadays, and they've poisoned the minds of many. Can you imagine a Pogba type of hyped player, their own biggest fan, playing alongside Keane?!? Roy would scare the lad and Pogba would demand a transfer, something along those lines. One thing Keane did get was people's respect, respect built on character and performances, respect not just from his own teammates but from his opponents too. You need a leader who bites, someone you really don't want to let down, dare I say someone who intimidates you?!? These types of players aren't around anymore, and it's all down to the money that's now in football in my opinion. How do you strike fear into a player who earns 300K+ a week, when you know that anything too loud or too aggressive will mean you could quite easily lose him to another club if he's scared more than he'd have liked. If people tell you you're fantastic enough, you'll believe it long past when it stopped being true. That's the poison chalice that's individual superstardom nowadays, spoils it to be honest

Keane was the driving force behind Man United's trophy cabinet. Absolutely world class.
He was not a world class player by any stretch of the imagination. He was a tough leader and a bully. Obviously an important part of their machine but not world class.

He's not world class. He always wanted to be a world class striker but RvP showed even in the twilight of his career what scoring class means. Rooney did of course score some very important goals on occasions but he was nowhere near the same class.

Doesn't make him world class. He was at the club for 13 seasons and only managed 20+ goals over all competitions 3 times. Nistleroy was here for 5 seasons and did it 4 times, if he had 13 seasons at the club he would probably have doubled rooneys figures.

When he mentioned world class, he was thinking in terms of magicians, game changers, players with sublime technical ability. There were others of course, warriors like Keane, Vidic, Robson, Ferdinand and Schmeical who provided the foundation for the showstoppers to shine.

Wayne Rooney was world class, and would've been world class in *any* outfield position on the pitch. He could've played anywhere, in any position and be top top level. There's not many players that have that quality to their game.

Top, top level looks something like: Messi continuing Barca's South American Legacy which consists of Romario, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho... The 4 R's in turn, Barca's response to Di Stefano - who won first 5 European Cups for Real Madrid. Add Pele + Maradona + Cruyff + Xavi + Zizou to the list. For Defenders, you have Beckenbauer + Baresi + Maldini who are top top level. In goal, Yashin.

we can still disagree with his definition of world class being only the players who created and scored goals. for me there are world class players in every position. i think it's obvious that fergie has issues with certain players and he's a bit of a troll at times. he is blinded by power. but he's a great man, a great leader and a great character. if he was perfect it would be boring.

As a Liverpool fan even I could name a few in the United squads that were world class that he missed off but the top one has to be Schmeichel. That guy was an amazing keeper. Of that era the only keeper that I can think of that could challenge him was Oliver Kahn so he has to be world class.

Van Persie was a player on his day but yeah...Beckham was always a hard one to call, the best, or one of, at what he did well (crossing, free kicks etc) but had obvious weaknesses (couldn't dribble, take a man on. Great but limited so a difficult call...was also good positionally and at stealing a free kick

As much as I respect Fergie, I can't believe he left out Schmeichel of all people. During his time, he was regarded as one of the best goalkeepers of the '90s. Winning the European Cup with Denmark has got to make you world-class.

I agree that Schmeichel was indeed world class. Him and Cantona won more games for Utd than any other player during the 90's. I will say though, there were only 16 teams in the Euros back then. The odds of winning it then were a lot higher than nowadays

i think because denis irwin was a quiet lad in and around the dressing room..and he didnt shout too much on the pitch, that he is constantly over looked as being probably the best defender the premiership has seen...could play left or right back so effortlessly ,,,,the guy was just so confident and clever...could read the game so well..and his ability to cross a ball at speed was immense.,,i genuinely have never seen him play a poor game for united...and to top it off,,the model professional on and off the pitch..and a really nice guy for good measure...and..oh yeah,,,could leave keepers rooted to the spot with his dead ball specials......world class.!

Roy Keane was one of the most complete midfielders of his generation and a truly world class player. Morons who know nothing about the game and ABU's will tell you he was just a thug who went around kicking people, but anyone who saw Roy in his prime, knows anything about football and is being objective, knows Roy was one of the greatest midfielders of his or any other generation. He was the heartbeat and playmaker in that United team as well as the first and sometimes last line of defense. These kids that base their assusmptions on 5 minute youtube videos, who were just old enough to see Scholes sitting deep and spraying long balls around toward the end of his career assume he was uniteds playmaker, but he wasn't in Keane's prime, Keane was, Scholesy played up behind the strikers. Keane didn't hit 40 yeard Hollywood passes that look good in youtube videos like Scholey did, he played short quick passes into feet (similar to what Carrick is being praised for now) and was always setting a pace that other teams just couldn't live with and he went out and performed week in week out for 10 years, unlike Gerrard, Lampard, Viera or any of the rest of them, who had quiet periods and that's why united wouldn't go more then a year or two without winning a league from the ninteies to the early 2000's. Whats more he did it internationally for Ireland surrounded by weaker players, dominating the likes of Davids, Seedorf and Rui Costa to name just a few, playing alongside players like Matt Holland and Mark Kinsella. As good as Scholesy, Giggsy and Cantona were, Roy Keane, Cristiano Ronaldo and big Pete are the only players during Fergies era who you could actually class as being the best players or in the top 3 in the world in their positions at certain time periods. Fergie is just being disengenious here

He mentioned players I always think of when I think of Manchester United. Eric Cantona was part of a special MU era which is ancient now but if you were watching then then you will never forget it. Cantona was there at the start of when things swung towards Manchester United for consecutive league winnings. Giggs and Scholes, simply two magicians who made special plays and always got the ball across to other players who scored. It's only Cristiano Ronaldo who I know less of. When Cris came I was paying less attention to MU, but for a long time when I wasn't looking MU were continuously winning the league with Alex ... He's entitled to his opinion but there are so many more players: Cole, Rooney, Beckham, Yorke ... Goals every week 😊Credits to Alex Ferguson, his expertise and vision made the whole thing work.

Roy Keane was just a hacker. He wasn't on the same level as the like of Ronaldo or Giggs in a footballing sense.
Obviously he would never mention Keane. He left on bad terms with Fergie and he is the only ex united player who actually talks crap about united after he retired!
You either weren't old enough to understand how good of a footballer Roy Keane was or you just know nothing about football. Keane dominated games. He didn't play 50 yard passes like Scholes, beat 3 or four players like Giggs, but he was the heartbeat of that United team, dominant defensively obviously, but controlled the tempo of the game, fizzing sharp short passes into feet and always moving to be in position to take it back. In his prime it wasn't Scholes that was the united playmaker, but Keane. Scholes would push up a lot more in those days, that's why he scored more goals. Keane dominated midfields containing the likes of Edgar Davids, Clarence Seedorf, Rui Costa in weak Ireland teams internationally with the likes of Mark Kinsella and Matt Holland playing alongside him. well done ...i always thought he did not get the credit and yes i remember watching the game with juventus lol ...he did not make a fuss when he slid with the ball into our own net..he laid on his back and i bet he thought at that moment..fucking hell didnt mean to do that and where was those fucking defenders...he jumped up after 3 seconde lying on his back then got on with a performance that took us into the next round... a real hero ....

Roy Keane was easily the greatest and most influential player Ferguson ever had and he knows that well. He devalued himself as a man and a manager to make settling scores more important than telling the truth.
I think that's crazy, he knows the players he has had and covered it with we win as a team rather than individuals. Clearly these are the players he genuinely thought dominated their positions. The list mentioned of who played though does make you wonder, particularly no defender mentioned

When you describe 'world class players' you talk about longevity and consistency. Not just perform for a month of a year. But every day year in year out and those 4 world class players done it.

Sir Alex seems to be one of the rare kind of british people who can look at the facts from a football experts perspective. And that's probably the reason why he was so successful with Manchester when the english national team used to fail horribly all the time.

Absolutely and Most of the time Manchester United had a world class player in each position during his era...They probably didn't have depth like some other great teams...But regardless...just look at his squads... quality everywhere...

Peter Schmicheal was a world class Goal keeper and was outstanding through out his career. A lot of other players had their ups and downs based around being consistently world class but Fergie definitely missed Schmicheal on the list.

THAT is "ability to change a game" but through mental aspects which is somehow less than whatever Scholes or Ronaldo's "ability to change a game" Scholes/Cantona/Giggs/Ronaldo etc did NOT have the ability to drag his team back from the dead. As others have said, the glaring omission of Keane, RVN & Schmeichel is criminal. As much as his philosophy is that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, without those three parts, his and Manchester's status would not be where it was during his reign. These three were playing at the highest level, against the best and got consistent, dizzying results. They were also gifted players regardless of their team. The only logical conclusion I can come up with is that they must have been world class. I would half-ear RVN being dropped, but to omit Keane and Schmeichel has got to be bad blood.

I think it's more about having a dig at the players he left out of the list ie the ones he fell out with personally - Keane, Schmeicel, Rooney, RVN, Stam etc.
IMO a world class player is one that would get into any team, any where in the world, and there is no doubt that Peter Schmeichel could've got into any team. He was THE best keeper I have ever seen. With out him UTD could not have played such an attacking and Cavalier style of football.

@@lukemit6640 roughly the same time is misleading. Schmeichel was mainly a keeper in the 90s, Buffon the 2000s+. Their overlap would have seen a 32 year old goalkeeper pitted against a 15 year old (1995), in which case you'd choose Schmeichel, or a 36 year old vs a 19 year old (1999) in which case you'd choose Buffon, mainly because Peter had admitted he couldn't handle the big time by that stage.
You can argue all day about what makes a world class player but let me say this. If one of the greatest goalkeepers to have ever lived isn't world class then the whole thing is a joke. Peter Schmeichel, probably the best keeper of his generation. Roy Keane, the most consistent player the PL has ever had. I like Sir Alex but not to include these 2 as world class just makes his opinion look all wrong.
You should understand his tone behind his explanation. He’s not talkin world class in general. I think he’s talking ever. Giggs and cantona imo I would put schimichael for either but those 2 are just as good. But they had a much bigger impact on the game then schimichael. Ronaldo and scholes are players spoken in air so rare, in prem history scholes is only bettered by Henry and bergkamp. In history Ronaldo is only matched by Messi maradona and Pele, see his view on it. Longevity also seems to influence it. Giggs 20+ years same with scholes Ronaldo did so much in so little time but even in his career he’s just done unspoken things, Catona was short but like I said he’s one u could swap and I feel is only included because he saved fergie his job when United didn’t win a title for like 8 years

And YES there are others who you could argue whether they were or not but these 15 were all definitely world class at some period within their careers!!!

@Nick Hyland coming from an Italian background, i grew up on Serie A, had a vested interest from a very young age, watched Veron, for Samp, Parma & Lazio, he was absolutely World Class. Wether he produced it for United is another matter, but SAF had a world class player at his disposal there, it’s on him that he never utilised him properly.
