When I cut his nails he turns into the best actor in the world and could win an award just for being a cry baby. • My 4 month old cat was just half asleep in front of me on my bed and I started playing with his paws and squeezing his nails out. After he had no reaction i grabbed my nail clipper and slowly clipped the tip of his claws one by one. The most he would do is pull his paw away in his sleep or stretch his whole body. I managed to get both of his front paws and his back paws weren't too sharp so I left them alone.😊😊😊 Imma give him a treat when he wakes up lol.

  • So basically: Start by just getting them comfortable on your lap and lay them in a hunched position. Figure out their boundaries with their paws being held, pulled (not to far) away from their bodies, and squeezed. Trim the narrow tip of the nail (not the pinkish part at the bottom), and stop for the day. Over the course of 20 days, one nail a day, until they learn to sit and continue the full trim in one sitting. Reward them for the trim each time and be consistent with rewarding them. And it’ll get easier if you follow these guidelines. If they don’t want their nail trimmed, it’s fine. Rewarding them for the trim will imprint a positive association to the process.

  • There was a stray cat where I lived that used to greet me when I used to come home in the morning. She would waddle so fast when she saw me and would meow. I would pet her till she couldn't take it. I couldn't take the cat in because my family didn't tolerate cats so I would feed it outside. It was a calico cat just like this one and I named it Marble because of its coloring. This cat is also named marble and now I'm so happy and sad inside. Started with just one foot to see how they reacted and gave them half an hour before I tried another foot and was able to do all four feet. Obviously all cat’s temperaments are so different but I’m very proud of my fur babies - especially the 2 year old who hadn’t had their nails trimmed before🥰 (and pleased I was not scratched to pieces!)

I managed to do only 1 nail yesterday and left it at that, didn't want to push her or traumatize her for fear she might really get aggressive every time I need to clip her nails. • We have a new kitten I want to do this with, but haven't yet. You can get your cat to turn into a pile of goosh with slow petting and softly speaking to him. I would think doing the nails when the cat is really relaxed or asleep would be the way to go. Our little guy is a real maniac in the morning and laid back in the afternoon so for us timing is going to be important.

    @amywalker7515@amywalker75152 жыл бұрын
    • Hi Amy, it's important to tailor this advice to what you think would work best for your pet. It is fantastic that you're getting on this early because the younger they are the more receptive they will hopefully be as an adult. If they're not used to having their nails trimmed, try getting them used to you handling their paws and working up to trimming one nail at a time then stopping for some time or at a pace that works best for your cat (remember to reward with lots of healthy treats after). Hopefully they will become more comfortable with you trimming their nails over time. That's a great idea of waiting until your cat is relaxed or tired, whatever makes nail trimming easier for the both of you. Wishing you two all the best. 😊🐾

  • patience is the key. It's hard to start with only cutting one nail, but that's the way to do it. It's the way to do everything new with a cat... if it is at all possible. Even if you have to unavoidably push your cat and keep going for whatever emergency reason, still go slow, be calm, and be patient. Vets deal with strange cats all the time and this is how they do it. If you start cutting nails as a kitten, when they grow up many adult cats will happily lay on their backs (like a baby) in the groove of your two thighs and allow you to trim their nails with no fuss at all. If you have a "terror" of a cat... maybe even a nail is too much to start with. Fearful cats may need even slower exposure therapy: you might have to start up by picking them a small way off the ground for one second, then putting them down and treating them. Movements should be slow and patient. As should our voice - this vet does an excellent job with his voice as well. What a great teaching example. It can be hard to slow down like this especially when our lives are busy and there are so many demands on our time... but it will pay off. If you have a long period of acclimatization ahead of you... set up a "desensitization station" near where you and your cat sit near each other - then, when you are both in the vicinity, you can simply reach over for a treat and perform the action you need them to tolerate. That way, a daily (or twice-daily) interaction need only take 10 seconds... instead of requiring you to find the cat, collect the materials, etc.

  • Dr. Greenway - thanks so much for the good advice - to take it slow, calmly, pet the cat, reward the cat, stop if the cat (or you) are agitated or angry. Our first try was amazing. We kept "Simba" quiet, offered a treat before we started, cliped the hind feet first, then the front. Right afterf, more treats!

    • Hi Joseph, so glad to hear it was helpful! Good on you for giving it a go and the more you and Simba keep at it, the easier it gets. That's exactly it and yes, treats help :) Wishing you guys all the best.

  • What a great idea! Definitely gonna try this! If anyone plans do this though I just googled how short should you cut the cats nails and there is like this thing called a quick and if you cut that, the nail will bleed pretty badly.. so you apparently have to cut at a downward angle and avoid the quick! Just thought I’d share the info!

  • My bby (who is not alive anymore 😭) he was sooo easy to do everything with :( He was just giving up “fine do whatever so you can leave me alone”. I have never met a cat like that before. My Vet loved my cat for being so easy and nice. He didn’t even made a noise. When he was checked by the Vet he was just looking in my eyes like “ok mum, you are here so I guess I’m fine” then curled up in my arms when the Vet was done. He was soooo nice to deal with. (I think people have done some really bad things to him before we find him so he was really scared of people. Did take a long time before he trusted me and understand all I wanted was to help him. And feed him 😜) Anyhow.. my two other cata.. wow. I can’t fix their nails. They are sooooo angry when I touch their paws(?) and my Vet are scared for one of them.. :( I will try that you said about “one nail one day”. I just wonder one thing.. if I laying in my bed and my cat is laying beside me and letting me holding him. (He love when I do!) Is this a bad time to trying to trim one nail? Maybe a stupid question but.. yeah.. is it a bad time? 😂🙈

I drew the line when I saw that they accidentally cut the pink part of her nail and I only noticed because there was some blood on her when they put her back. They didn't even let me know and I felt awful for her, so after I tried clipping her nails everything was perfectly fine and she hardly fought me. Thank you so much for this!
