  • People who make affordable DIY builds do a lot of cost savings left and right, instead of using CNC services they use angle grinder and a lot of filing, instead of buying almost top of the line lithium cells from tesla they use batteries from nissan leaf, instead of brand new motor and inverter they buy 5th hand used stuff, instead of using a massive military truck they build vw golf or some audi.

    • True, though your time is also a factor. If there’s a part that takes you six weeks to fabricate yourself vs six days to get machined, it may be worth it in your time and keeping project momentum to pay more to get the part faster.

    • I dunno if LEAF batteries have the power density to handle driving such a heavy monster of a truck. They aren't exactly made for performance like Tesla batteries are.

    • @@hiteshadhikari I've watched all of his videos on this project, and IIRC none of the stuff he put into it was sponsored. The help part yeah obviously he had other people helping him, but you can do that with friends on a project car too. Also one-off projects cost more because there's no economy of scale to take advantage of. The project was free for him thanks to the videos, but the final cost he gave doesn't include any sort of discounts or sponsorships AFAIK.

    • That's why they aren't the future. EV's are often scrapped as un-econimical to repair when the only thing they need is a new battery. They're also terrible for the environment. Screw electric cars.

    • ​@@Steamrick Labor is a moot point. The price is simply how much it was for him. There is no one general price for basically any of it. Prices will differ drastically from person to person, not only because of preference but because of time! There is quite a bit more available now overall than when he did his build (at least when he purchased the major components). The used market is increasing more and more each day as well as more and more options for controllers, BMS's and chargers and more and more manufacturers and the aftermarket is increasing at a fast rate! Not to mention more knowledge is available as well! There is a reason the title of the video says "my", he did say DIY Humvee prior which is much more fitting because if you're having a shop build it then it's not a DIY!
