In this video, our community gets the chance to ask filmmaking legend Edgar Wright anything. As the director of box office hits such as Hot Fuzz and Last Night in Soho, but also as a film school reject, it is fascinating to learn about his granular tips on storyboarding and sound editing filmmaking, as well as his broader insights about working behind the camera.
Whether it’s establishing how to research or put together a story that will translate well to the screen, how to work with people you may be starstruck by, or even how to find the perfect music to create unforgettable needle drops in your film, Edgar Wright shares his own advice on how to become a director and make the films you want to make.
There’s no wrong time to start, the only wrong thing to do is to not start at all.

  • It is a criminal offense that this video isn't viewed by more people, especially with people who love cinema. Edgar is a modern cinematic genius. Listening to him you get the impression that he not only knows his craft but loves and lives by it. Truly a legend.

    • I’m trying to get into filmmaking (just submitted a script to BBC Writersroom), and I viewed Edgar’s course and found it super insightful. I’m going to try and make some short films and write more scripts. Hopefully get an agent and really pursue this fully before the end of the year.

  • At a young age I watched the shit out of hot fuzz and it’s my favourite movie so seeing his opinion and listening to his advice is so inspiring

    • You watched the shit out of it? That sounds like it should have been a line out of Hot Fuzz. Probably said by Nick Frost. An awesome and underrated movie indeed

  • I really like his take on films, and music in films. How many times have you heard a song and thought "this would be great, in a movie" I've been into foreign music, for 20 or 30 years now, and know; this will never be in a film, but you could, do it this way. I don't speak any other languages, but really love many of these songs, that evoke a certain feeling, from them. Two that come to mind; 'As if you were mine' by Jo Sung Mo (really one of the saddest songs I've ever heard) and the other being; 'Plastic Love' originally by Mariya Takeuchi, in 1985, but covered by hundreds of people since then (and the song that launched an entire genre; 'City Pop')
