DIY Hidden Bookcase Door - Murphy door build
Follow along as I build a hidden bookshelf murphy door to a theater gaming room. I was able to complete this build for around $100 by doing it myself.
Hinge - amzn.to/4aHkYvx
Door catch - amzn.to/4ctYIqG
Wall paper - amzn.to/43vKDof
This project cost me, personally, around $100. It was very custom to my space using a lot of salvaged materials. I don’t discount the amount of work that went into this. It was very labor intensive but the materials were cheap.
-1sheet 3/4” Radiata pine-$49.95
-2sheets 5mm eucaboard-$27.00
-2-2x4s-$8.00
-Door hinges-$10.00
-Doors-free(30 years old salvaged out of a remodel destined for the dumpster)
-Select pine face frame/trim-free(leftover-actual cost $30)
-Paint/Primer-free(leftover-actual cost $50)

This will be your greatest success ever! Loved the video 👍
Thanks #1 fan
but didn't he have other entrances to the hidden room?
How cool.
As with a Gate the diagonal bracing Always ascends Upward for constant lifting. As for Glue, yes from the very start. A small bottom ball-bearing wheel would assist wonders with load swing. Beautiful job
When I was a little girl, there wouldn't have been enough money in the universe to induce me to come out of the secret room. You win the Awesome Dad award. Well done.
Haha, thanks so much 🙏🏻
Love it! Will you build one for me? Nothing is even in my house....floors are sloped lol @@diydad1593
Twisted lumber from HD???? I found a straight piece once.
Ditto!
I agree! That was such an awesome idea, I would never want to come out either! LOVED the movie room & the living room was beautiful…loved the colors in there! What a great dad & so talented!
Your kids will never forget how magical you made their childhood. You are a skilled guy and a great father!
That is very kind. Thank you sir 🙏🏻
It is literally just a door
@@pyropulseIXXI Sure, just like a Rolls-Royce Boat Tail is just a car 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️😂😂
@@pyropulseIXXIIts not the door thats in question. Its the child's imagination. Remember to us adults, a cardboard box is just that. But to a child its a house, a car, a boat, spaceship, Rollercoaster, sled, and on and on and on.
From a fellow woodworker, very impressive. And recovering from the hinge goof (we've all made) without having to hide it speaks volumes about your character. Well done!
Thank you and thanks for watching
Aside from something fun it kind of makes a safe room.
A couple of 4x2s on hinges mounted on the opposite wall with rubber stoppers on the end, one level with the base and the other with the top would make the bookcase seem solid from the other side when engaged would effectively make it just that. Relying on deception rather than full security, but should keep the kids safe from an intruder for a time should such a need arise.👍
@@alaricgoldkuhl155I think that’s what the pool cues are for!
Guns makes a safe room
My Dad designed our house when I was a child. He put in two secret doors, one small one. What treasures. And came in super useful for avoiding unwanted visitors too!
Really awesome! I love that you showed the upside down mistake. It's actually very encouraging to see others make some mistakes, and refreshing to see a maker using "regular" tools :)
I feel the same way. 💩 happens sometimes, you just got to roll with it
Also shows us how to fix it
This is the first time i've sat down at paid my full attention to a 15 minute video in forever. Very captivating
That means a lot. Thanks
I’m a remodeling contractor and I have to say how very impressed I am with the skill and detail you put into this project. You commented that you are a novice woodworker, but you did as well as many professionals that I’ve seen on KZhead and have worked with. Keep building, you’re a natural at it. 👏
Thanks so much
Man that's not NOVICE work! Who you kidding, LOL. But that's absolutely fantastic. Some guys claim to be carpenters can barely do shop math. Great attention to detail and symmetry. Great work.
I appreciate that. Thanks for watching
Absolutely amazing. Your wife and children have the best father and husband ever. My dad was a carpenter and was always renovating our house and always building things for us and especially our mum. Ever grateful that my dad was so skilled. Thankyou for sharing.
Thanks for watching ❤️
Same here. My father was a carpenter for over 30 years. Watching Beau's videos brings back a lot of fond memories of my dad and how he used to take me on his jobs when I was younger. ❤
A secret room AND swords! You rock Dad!
Thanks
i would never guess there was a secret room behind what a fantastic job you did on that, perfection
Honestly this might be the best secret door I’ve ever seen. Super well done and a very cool room on the inside 👍
Thank you
Beau, your wife should be very happy to let you do more projects. You did an excellent job. Looks amazing. Congrats!!
Thanks so much 🙏🏻
Wife approved! 🥰
You did an amazing job. No novice has that many tools and that much talent.
I added a wheel to support the weight. Trick is to install at an angle that matches the path the door takes over the floor! I love the addition of the doors. Now I have to "improve" mine! Thanks for setting the bar higher for me!
That is so seriously cool! I can’t believe you think you’re a novice woodworker. Fantastic job! That secret room might save your family one day. I also consider that a huge selling point if you ever decide to move.
I just completed a very similar hidden door. I installed 4 casters on the bottom of the bookcase so the hinges would have virtually no load on them. Worked perfect.
Might be the coolest thing I've ever seen
SO many impressive things about this video! Dad of the Year award!
Thanks so much
I'm definitely copying this for a hidden access into my pew pew room.
That was the most genuine like and subscribe I’ve ever heard 😂. “Like and subscribe so my wife will let me do more of this stuff.” You got it man 👍
Great job, your kids will never forget get this!
Amazing build! You said you aren't a woodworker, but your attention to detail is far beyond most! My only suggestion would be that your diagonal cross brace should be in compression instead of tension. But since you glued on your backings, it probably won't matter.
So cool Beau! Down to earth with the goof up. Who hasn’t had one??? You just became “Super Dad”.
Thanks for watching
This rocks! You are a cool Dad. As an imaginative child my Daddy would make fun furniture for our fort and doll houses, we were poor but the one thing he had was some reclaimed wood from other projects. Our fav place to hide was a hideout nook.
This is a fantastic build and exactly what I was looking for, as I also would like to build my own, as no way I’m spending $2+k on it. Your build pretty much looks better than anything I’ve seen from the places that sells the kits. Thank you!
Thank you, go for it. It was much easier than I thought it would be
This is awesome! Even more so since you made it yourself! Tell your wife your audience wants to see more builds, and if you run out of things to do there, I’ll hire you to do some things on my house!
Haha, thanks so much
Best hidden door video I have seen on KZhead !
Not only a like, but this sir goes into a saved playlist. Well done!
This looks amazing!!! My husband won’t let me do it, but the rooms are truly stunning. I guess your wife has to support you being a content creator 😅
She gave me a side eye when I first mentioned it. Now she likes it
Looks so amazing! Your kids must have been so excited to see this :)
This is so amazing! I would have never guessed that behind that beautiful built-in bookcase that there was a secret room!
That’s very sweet. 🙏🏻
WOW, ALWAYS AND FOREVER MEMORIES!!! You Sir, are a fantastic Father as building this for and with your kids have just created BONDING MOMENTS and MEMORIES that will only strengthen over time! Great idea and Excellent follow through!!
That’s very nice, thank you. They are my world
something about working in the garage while it rains out seems satisfying.. I've also never picked up a power tool in my life lol
Skills are off the chart! Thanks for letting us see the project.
Thanks
Great job. Showing your “miss steps” shows us that you are human. Not only the door, I learned a few things from you about the shelves, bookcase, & trim. Thanks
Thanks for watching
Ok, this is awesome. The entryway of my mancave also has an arch at the top and I've been contemplating how to do it. I like what you did WAY better than the ideas I had in mind. Now, I can stop procrastinating and get to it! Thanks for sharing!!
Yeah that archway had me scratching my head. Thanks for watching
That is so cool. I still feel like a book wired to a lock would have been the cherry on the cake but that looks really great.
I greatly appreciate your showing the oops! I get so upset with myself LOL when really everyone has glitches, just not everyone puts out videos to actually HELP others like you did ! Thank you!
Watching another Dad do Dad is always fun. Great job.
Thanks man👊🏻
My husband made one for my daughters room for Christmas when she was 11
Wow, I love the secret bookcase. It is so beautiful 🤩 You are an artist!
Your garage, tools and methods are just like mine as a fellow DIYer 👍🏼
So cool!! Add some type of heavy bar lock on the inside and you have a great "safe room".
Haha, can’t trust my kids with that
@@diydad1593 🤣🤣
Mag locks. Turn it on inside, then hide the shutoff switch where you can get to it in the house somewhere.@@diydad1593
@@diydad1593That's a good thought. My dad had a lock on the outside of the tool room for some reason. My little brother thought it would be funny to lock him in. He had to use tools to remove the door. No more door after that.
Amazing!!! I love the idea that if you’re wanting find a safe place to hide (home invasion, etc) you have the safest place to hide….nobody would know or look for that room unless they studied the outside!!! I want one!!! You’re awesome for building that.
Even if that wasn't a secret door to an enchanting theater, it would still be a fantastic addition to just about any home! Great build, made even better with hinges. 👍😊
Thanks for the kind words 🙏🏻
This murphy bookcase just solved two problems. Thank you.
Thanks for watching
So freaking sweet. You're a cool dad haha
This is the dream of my wife. You don't know how grateful I am. I have lots of videos saved on this topic, but this seems to be the answer to all my questions. I really admire how clean you worked. I would have painted and sand it outside and I get why you did inside. Thank a lot!
Glad it helped. Thanks for watching
Well done sir! Thumbs up for a great build, & double thumbs up for the scrap sword!
That was actually pretty cool. Tell your wife we need more videos like this.
Wow!! How did you steal my dream??? I had a "dream" of doing something similar in our basement in NC... like a hidden room, not just a door. I have the ideas just not the expertise to make it come to fruition. Sure wish you were our neighbor. Awesome job!!
Thanks for watching
"Such an amazing DIY project! Your dedication and creativity truly shine through. Keep up the great work! 👍"
Great video, hope your kids enjoy it, they're lucky to have such a great dad.
Thanks very kind, thank you
I so appreciate how clear your instructions are & even more that you included the part about messing up the hinges at first because that made me feel so much better about all the mistakes I’m about to make trying this. Those kids have a damn cool parent who’d create this.
Go for it. Thanks so much
It seems like a good escape/safety room and would like to see a lock put on the inside
Nice job!! I'm sure your kids can't wait to show everyone what their dad built. Ty for sharing.
Thanks for watching.
Dang, beautful and you'd never know it was there when it isn't open. Add some sort of lock and you've got a full panic room too.
expected a ticket both as a surprise reveal when you open the door. This is Awesome,
Very nice job!! $100 materials $1000 labor..priceless kids loving hide out
Thank you for sharing this. I really liked how you also showed what went wrong and how you fixed it.
Thanks
What a cool project! Great video. I’ve wanted a secret doorway like that since I was a kid, I’m sure your kids love it!
What a great job you’ve done here. Congratulations sir
Thanks so much for showing the work in this. I looked at the Murphy doors online, and they are a little pricey. I'm a novice wood worker and was initially a little intimidated by the idea of doing it myself, but this video gave me the confidence that I can.
That’s great, go for it. Thanks for watching
Kudos to the DIY'ers that are able to do this type of thing and do it well. Hats off to you. Great and inspiring video!
Thanks for watching
This was amazing thank you. I'm researching to turn one of my office doors into additional storage, and this seems like a great solution.
Thanks
Seriously the best instructions in building one of these!!!
Dude, you nailed it. Great craftsmanship. Loved the video.
Thank you
Wow, my ocd is completely satisfied by the work done here. So thoughtfully done at each stage, absolutely amazing job what a result!
Thanks so much
How magical and wonderful! You are very imaginative and your wife and kids are very blessed by your woodworking talents. Enjoy them and enjoy your beautiful home!
That’s very kind of you, thanks
KZhead no longer allows me to like videos so, I LOVED THIS VIDEO! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much
Took me a while to get to it and glad I finally watched. Always liked hidden doors, just never had a space that would work. The kids have gotta love it. Moms gotta like that part. Good stuff, Thanks.
Thanks for watching
Very nice brother.im a 33 yr carpenter and I think you did a great job.
Thank you sir
WHAT A COOL DAD! Amazing creativity and such a cool home feel!!! Love the tour by the little guy!!! :D
That’s very kind, thank you
Damn as a mexican i will have to say your work ethic is Mexican ! (Except the michelob, tecate or modelo usually) but your definition and vision is USA ALL THE WAY !!! Lets go mannnnn!!!!! Amazing detailing (I do landscaping and painted industrial cabinets for 3 years in Texas )
Haha, thanks man. I have a lot of respect Mexican work ethic
It cracks me up when little guys use words like :apparently, or actually".
Great build! One day, when I have my own house, I'll do secret door too)
Looks much better than a kit door and you did it with such a deep opening. Great job❤
Thanks so much
That bookcase/secrect door will never sag. I love to recycle materials too. You did an amazing job for a novice, looked professional to me. You may consider yourself a novice, but you are very creative and did a really nice job. Don’t sell yourself short.
Thanks so much
Damn man this is AWESOME, very well done.
Simply, wow! Awesome job!
I enjoyed watching your attention to detail, well done! Looks fabulous.
That is just cool!!!! FANTASTIC job
Fantastic! What a beautifully detailed door. I hope your family is proud of it and the inside room too. Perfection. Thank you for showing us the process.
Thanks for watching
You’re a novice?? Wow, that’s beautiful what you created!! I can only imagine how great you will become if you continue doing this work ❤
Thanks for the kind words
Wow! Incredibly cool! Great job.
I love your door with shelves! It’s great to utilize every space!
Man, bro, you did that! 👍🏼. You had an idea and just went to work. Even with some errors you made that look great on the finished product! I applaud you, from one wood worker to another. And you made it look super easy. Great job
Awesome job. Looks great.
This is EXACTLY what I want for my office door … AWESOME THANKS FOR SHARING👏🏽
Good job, fun! Thanks for sharing
Fantastic work! Awesome❤
super fun build! and that movie room is absolutely epic 🔥
Brilliant, well done that man.
Skillful and stunning! Absolutely LOVE this!
That looks amazing! Great job.
Very nice job. I'm going to do this at my son's house.
OMG what a fabulous door and space you created. Good job!
