Porsche 911 GT3 RS vs Cayman GT4 RS: Definitive Track Test | Top Gear

Porsche has graced us with two incredible RS cars in 2022, and we’re here to find out which is best.
The new GT3 RS isn’t just inspired by motorsport, it’s a full-blown race car. The engine is a 4.0-litre naturally-aspirated flat-six revving to 9,000rpm and producing 518bhp. It’s got 860kg of downforce at 177mph and 406kg at 124mph, well over double those of the 991.2 GT3 RS it succeeds. But worry not, this is still not a slow car - 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 184mph.
However, if you’ve ever wondered what would happen if Porsche stuffed the stupendous GT3 engine into the back of its mid-engine baby-brother, the Cayman… the GT4 RS is your answer. It’s the most hardcore, powerful and track-hungry Cayman Porsche has ever made. 493bhp, 332lb ft of torque and 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds. The question is, can it give the more expensive GT3 RS a run for its money?
Top Gear Magazine’s Jack Rix and Ollie Marriage give us the rundown on track.

    • @@farishanafiah8461 That makes sense. At the end of the day, it's about the experience you want. Plus, for my two cents, even if I had money for the 911, I might get the Cayman just because I might feel more comfortable driving the tires off of it and replacing parts. I always wonder about getting cars that are too rare or too "whatever" and if the owners ever really get to ring them out and run them hard like they're made for. Maybe they do, and I hope so. Either way, it sounds like your friend made the right choice for himself, and I hope he as a blast.

The MR package alone wasn't going to improve 9 whole seconds on a lap. however, the cup 2R also don't quite have the advantage people imagine, because it's a qualifying tire, it loses its edge after about 4 minutes into the lap. @K1Kamikaze@K1Kamikaze11 ай бұрын
    • @@K1Kamikaze If you do not know what you're talking about, then please don't comment. I own both of these cars, plus the new 992 gen 911 GT3 RS...plus the 992 GT3 Cup car. They don't "detune" it. It's the same engine, flipped 180 degrees, to fit in a mid engine platform. The reason it has 9 less HP and 15 less lb-ft is because of the longer exhaust system. You are however, correct, that they would never let it beat the bigger brother GT3 (let alone the even bigger brother GT3 RS). The bigger reason isn't the slightly less HP and torque...the bigger reasons are: 1) way less downforce than the GT3 (and waaay less than the GT3 RS, of course), older 991 suspension on the GT4 RS whereas the 992 GT3 and GT3 RS have the first double wishboe suspension in those cars. 3) Even though it's the smallest dimensionally, it's the heaviest of the 3 cars. My manual GT3 is 101 lbs. lighter than my GT4 RS (and the PDK GT3 is 64 lbs. lighter)...and my GT3 RS is 53 lbs. lighter. 4) Gearing...the GT4 RS has shorter gears...but that can be good or bad depending on track specifics. So, "detune" is a lazy way to talk when you don't know the facts. The only thing that is correct is that they make sure it doesn't beat the GT3 family and, yes, IF all other things were equal (which they are faaar from not), a mid-engine platform would be superior.

  • It was interesting to see the differences between the GT3 and GT4 class cars. I race a 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport against other GT4 cars in a mixed class races with GT3 Cup Cars. The GT3 cars average about 10 seconds per lap faster than the GT4s at tracks like Daytona, Sebring and Watkins Glen, with similar skill levels of the drivers.

  • The GT3 RS is actually faster around the Nurburgring than the old GT2 RS. Personally if I had to choose, I'd go with the GT3 RS over the GT4 RS. I'm not an old man, so I can handle a firm ride. I also just prefer the looks of the GT3 RS.

    • You wouldn't be able to use a fraction of the cars performance on the road, it would be a total waste of a great car using it for posing shooting flames in the high street, old man or not

      @4Kandlez@4Kandlez Жыл бұрын
    • @@4Kandlez The same can be said for any performance car. There's no way you can use a GT4 RS's potential on the road. And if you're buying a car like that, odds are you're a person who would enjoy taking it to a track as well. And for that I'd choose the GT3 RS all day every day
