  • My guess is they thought since he already had his hat trick, it would trickle down to someone else who can take the pen. Noni is the 2nd taker and thinks the pen was caused by the tackle on him. Reality is that the tackle on Cole was the cause of the pen and it solves all the petty bickering by him just taking it for his 4th of the night. I think the main issue was Noni and Nico getting into it about who would get the chance for another goal (Noni thinking the penalty was against him and Nico wanting a goal to probably try and get some goal bonus). • While you’re probably correct about what Jackson and Madueke were thinking, this is the reason you have a… Designated Penalty Taker (Cole Palmer) He is the primary player who takes the penalties and it’s his choice if he wants to take it himself or give it to a teammate. If he decides he wants it, no matter if its 4-0 or not being that is his decision because he his, again, the designated player who takes penalties. I’ve not even mentioned how Palmer is the only player who’s properly stepped up this season but even though it’s easy to work out what the other two were thinking, defending them within the context of team roles and dynamics is anything but.

I honestly think Jackson and Madueke were thinking that with Palmer on 3 he doesn’t NEED any more goals. There is a lot of selfishness on the Chelsea front line and I do wonder if some amount of greed is causing issues.

    @kmahta@kmahtaАй бұрын
  • I don't really mind it as a Chelsea fan. Palmer has a hat trick, Madueke thinks he's won the penalty so deserves to take it. In the celebrations noni puts an arm around Jackson and they go celebrate with palmer so it's not like he was doing it out of spite. Salah and Mane would be refusing to pass to each other for like 2 straight seasons because they wanted to be the main guy, but the media loves Liverpool so it was talked about in the frame of forwards having a hunger to score. I'm also glad Poch walk out of the post match press conference after only getting questions about the penalty stuff when his team won 6-0 and topped by an academy grad scoring his first ever goal for the club in the sweetest of moments. If he can channel his inner Conte/Mourinho he'll use it to galvanize the team and use this to bring the squad together for a strong end to the season

  • As a Chelsea fan, I’m going to have to correct some things. Up until post-match, we DID NOT have a designated PK taker. We’ve had other incidences throughout the season where players were fighting over who gets to take it. When asked, Poch would say that he lets them figure it out. Cole has been usually taking them because we had PKs given to us at crucial times in the matches and always converts. I think Noni and Nico were insistent on taking this one due to the nature of the match at that pt. Probably wanted to build up confidence and consistency. Noni also won the pen so I understand him more. It only took this most recent display for Poch to finally put his foot on the ground and name Cole the designated PK taker.

    @xmari3goldx@xmari3goldxАй бұрын
  • Additional context: -Alfie Gilchrist is an academy player. A Chelsea fan since he was young. -Noni Madueke is second designated PK after Palmer. -Noni was shown to push Jackson to celebrate with Palmer, with the latter reluctant to do so. -Regardless of how skillfull the players are, they are young and are trying to prove themselves professionally. This is not a high school match. -Team cohesion and chemistry takes time. This is not Football Manager.

  • I think that whole situation sums up Chelsea to a tee - they have good players and some who could the foundation of a good, even great team... But there's so many who are only there for the easy glory and the fanfare. Reminds me of the two Newcastle teams that were relegated - either players bought for the wrong reasons and ill equipped for the task at hand, or only there for the prestige being there brought on themselves. Poch needs a couple of seasons to sort through the dead parts and bring in a team that wants to work for each other, not just themselves - changing managers will just cement bad mindsets into the players

  • Okay, I like your jokes and yes it was childish, but I have to clarify some things. First, as people have pointed out, Gilchrist is homegrown who's been at Chelsea system since Drogba was playing, they have some cute photos together. If you want some positive vibes after this just watch his celebration of his first ever goal for the club at the end of the match. Second, Gallagher is the third captain, after Reece James and Ben Chilwell, but since both of them are made of fucking glass, Gallagher is effectively the actual captain. I'm really glad that he got to prove himself in this instance btw. Third, as a Chelsea fan I was mostly fine with the situation. It was way better than, say, Kepa's refusal to get off the pitch, and it was a very good character growth exercise for Palmer and Gallagher at least. Even though the more I think about it, the less I like it, I'm still mostly okay with it considering what followed. But really, we'll see in the coming weeks. Fourth, Poch did state that Palmer is the designated penalty taker, but he was always saying it with a caveat, that if Palmer is okay with it, other players can take his place, which basically is the reason why this happens, and why Sterling was on the same nonsense a couple matches ago. Fifth, unfortunately the Madueke sub was 99% planned from before the match, it was the only logical solution for the late game considering all the injuries. Sixth, this penalty was won by Palmer after he was fouled on, then the ball went to Madueke who also was knocked down in the same area. The penalty was on Palmer, but for most of this situation Madueke seems to be thinking that he's the one who was fouled on and he has a history of taking "his" penalties even when Palmer's on the pitch. Most of this time Palmer is laying on the ground squinting from pain, and there is no certainty if he'll be able to shoot himself. It doesn't excuse Madueke for how he behaves initially, but from what I gathered, the moment Madueke finally realizes that he wasn't the one who was fouled on, he calms down and more importantly starts calming Jackson down. Madueke apologized to Palmer after the penalty and they shook hands. Not ideal in the slightest, but Madueke seems to be SORT OF okayish in this instance. Jackson though... oh boy. This one is the problem, and he has a very nasty behavior all season, taking extra yellow cards for arguing with the refs and so on. He was doing better, but this is clearly an ongoing issue. I can only hope that he learns something from this situation. He doesn't have enough goals or overall efficiency to behave like he's the main star like he does here. And the real problem is that Jackson did not apologize to Palmer, they didn't shake hands and even after the match was over Jackson ignored Palmer and didn't shake hands with him. Another issue with him is that Jackson can't really be sent off, because there's no other striker who isn't an academy player really, and Nkunku is out of commission. So we'll have to wait and see how this situation evolves.

Dunno why he wasn't there to begin with but maybe it was only when Palmer went over since he's the penalty taker that he felt the need to intervene. But then Silva would've have had to run past him in the first place to get involved initially so who knows

Obviously they are both still very young relatively but just the physicality of Madueke and Jackson seemingly going away then spawning back in for no reason. I'd drop them but then I'm not a Premier league manager. Even with this scenario being pretty embarrassing there are positives for Chelsea here: - Proper captain behaviour by Gallagher, I think he's an okay player I've never really rated him but he seems to have a proper head on his shoulders. - Palmer knows to steer clear and not get into the mud with the others. - Thiago Silva is obviously a steady hand in the team, probably not going to be around for much longer obviously but hopefully he can impart some wisdom whilst he's there.

  • All credit to Palmer for stepping up and converting the penalty I think this is mostly a consequence of having a really young squad with everyone trying to justify their selection At least we got the win and that’s what matters most now

  • Over the top but i dont blame Noni or Jackson. 4-0 and hattrick in 28 one pen for your team mate is nothing. And dont tell me about golden boot race because thats how we end up with Sterling not squaring the ball in 2v1s when he predicted himself as top scorer for us this season. love cold palmer tho

  • Chelsea seem to be turning their season around: they're already ahead of last year's point total with seven matches still to play. They're genuinely in contention to play in Europe next season. I think that's a more interesting story than one minute of kerfuffle that blows up on twitter.

  • After watching the clips of the bit before and after the penalty, I think it’s clear that Noni thought the penalty was given for his foul and ones he realised it wasn’t he accepted straight away. But, Jackson on the other hand he needs to understand the Palmer is the number one penalty taker because I don’t want to see another Sterling missing a penalty after taking the ball of Palmer.

    @R0gue267@R0gue267Ай бұрын
  • I see pochetinos explainations in a different way from you. So the penalty taker gets decided during a game, and not during training? with the rest of the team? From his explanation thi is what I gathered. This one game i didn't define the penalty taker for the team, the players went on the field and i waited for a penalty to happen to see who had the balls for it. It wouldn't be the first time someone else takes a penalty besides the taker, I mean the fact that all that happen in the field tells you about their transfers strategy, they only wanted future stars, where are the squad players, is a great result today but will it be consistent?

    • Madueke is the second penalty taker and he thought he won it and since Palmer had a hattrick, it usually goes to the 2nd taker, Jackson was the problem which is why silva moved Jackson away and gave it to Madueke

  • As a Chelsea fan I don't think I've been more embarrassed of this club than in this moment. Palmer at this point has scored 8 from 8 on pens and is our best player, why would either think they should be taking this penalty? Glad the captain did exactly what a captain should do and sorted them out and I hope Poch sticks by what he said and if any of them try to play for themselves rather than the team, don't let them play
