We know that more often than not, car manufacturers don’t want to take too many risks. Given the sky-high costs that go into designing a new car, through to testing and finally manufacturing, it’s no surprise they often stick to a tried & tested design.
But that’s not to say manufacturers have always played it safe, and we’re here to reveal the top cars that were well ahead of their time! From Lamborghini’s first SUV from the 1980s through to the first four-wheel-drive supercar, Mat’s here to reveal the top cars that manufacturers truly took some risks on when it came to trying to bring new technology to the automotive industry!
But what do you think - is this the definitive list of cars that were ahead of their time? Or have we missed any? Let us know in the comments!

I second this
Thats a great idea
separate not into the drags but great idea
@@galactico9994 top gear hot lap isn't the same with handling test. Handling test is more like the figure 8 time and how much lateral g a car can pull which makes it more like motortrend.
Get an A2 mine has done over 220,000 miles I’ve owned it for 16 years and has cost very little to run. Servicing is every 30,000 miles and the trip computer proves than on a daily commute of over 10 miles never drops below 50mpg. The handling is sublime :-)
@That O'Riordan Lad , I gave myself a choice of three at the time: first Mercedes A class and a Smart roadster were the others and neither was a patch on the A2 :-)
@Seamus McShamish interesting, so a 16 year unblemished history over 220,000 miles is unreliable? Most definitely original head and turbo. Will replace both IF they fail and get take it to 500,000 miles. As for handling it is a 'Sport' with lowered suspension and rubber bad tyres from new. As for 'top heavy'? There's nothing up there but aluminium, the excellent drag coefficient helps as well (never needed wipers on the rear windows either). In over 40 years of driving the only cars that came close were the Alfa 155 and the 'semi-rave prepared' Singer Chamois Coupe (which could keep pace with original Lotus Elans on country roads as the cornering could always be done at top speed).
@Seamus McShamish , Parkers quote 990kg for mine. So what excuse do Parkers have to lie? 1300kg of aluminium would have to be a much bigger car or full of people :-)
That sounds great
@@Twongz_does_anything , well that rather proves my point as car design is obviously one of your strong points. The design of the A2 was decades ahead of its time.
Glad to see you included the Citroen DS, it was the car that sprang to mind when I saw the title of this video. It was also the first car to have headlights that steered around corners.
That's not exactly true.... The first car to have that was The Tucker Torpedo
@@eeshan1675 . Have to take your word for that - I know nothing about American cars.
It was the Tucker, that center light turned with the steering. Look up the Tucker, it’s a neat story & there was also a movie that of course was dramatized but interesting nun the less.

2:14 A lot of companies were actually somewhat sabotaging the success of the EV market in order for the success of oil.
u need to understand economics b4 saying stupid. stuff like this... this was a case study in one of my business classes. Its a long story what happened so, maybe research a bit b4 nxt time ....
@@saleh.hashmi oh you learned about it in school? It must be a fact then huh?
@@saleh.hashmi It's not like the oil and gass industry would ever do anything sinister to protect their bottom-line, is there? There is a reason that for the last 10 years that we've had working EV's, all youve ever heard about them is shit and how theyre not gonna work. All these negative claims have usually originated from mainstream media outlets, go figure why they would have EVs so much. We will never know for sure what happened to the EV1, but as far as conspiracy theories go, I think oil and gass lobbyists paying off a automaker to burry a project that could be the start of the end of 70% of their demand (personal transport section of oil consuption) is a highly, highly likely scenario.
that is correct, there of been other sabotages due to the threat of oil companies over the years, but they were basically bullied mafia style damn near to get rid of this car, and they only allow people to lease these vehicles so part of it was a study however I think due to the public reaction they did away with it because it was a threat to the oil company... most customers actually wanted to keep the vehicles and we're very satisfied with them, I always say GM was the Tesla before tesla, gm is crap However this was one of their greatest successes by execution to me
I've been fortunate enough to see and interact with 3 Tuckers. Here are a couple interesting facts I can remember off the top of my head: The Tucker actually DID go into production. They made 58 cars. However, Tucker himself died before they could make any more. The prototype name for the Tucker was the Torpedo, which is badass. The company was prosecuted heavily by Ford, even so far as them sabotaging their press releases, simply because Ford was scared Tucker would take business. This rivalry was so serious that after producing 35 cars, the two auto manufacturers entered a lengthy legal battle that Tucker won. In the time they were shut down the company produced 23 more cars, and shortly after the debate Tucker passed away. The Tucker concept was one of the first to have 3-point seatbelts, if not the first. I don't think the production version had seatbelts though. The Tucker was a pretty interesting car, a pioneer in automobile safety and was way ahead of its time.

My wife had a Streetwise and it was a really comfortable car with sports seats front and rear . The Porsche 959 is still a great car. Even 35 years on it'll do a 0-60 in 3.6 seconds. The Citroen DS, and I've driven one, is sublimely comfortable. But there are people who've been passengers in one and have succumbed to motion sickness due to it's "floaty" ride. And Lambos LM002 was aimed for military use. I recall reading an article and the writer said that he could picture some young corporal in some desert army, getting hold of the keys to the LM002, a Countach powered 4x4, and stuffing it into a sand dune at 160 mph!! :-))...
It’s such a shame that GM destroyed the EV 1’s. It looked like such a cool car and revolutionised the idea of a car by going electric. I’m glad it made it to this list!
Thought you’d like to add the NSU RO80 as well with its Wankel engine and aerodynamic body that looked at least 20 years ahead of its time.
Good shout
Except Mazda was also doing swoopy rotary powered cars at the same time, which it continued to do for several decades afterwards.
That's the Audi A4's grandpa! Since it was built in the same place as the A4, A6, and A8 in Neckarsulm, Germany.
Which was built with the help of citroën, and technically the first car with a rotary engine was a citroën gs birotor
If it comes to early high tech, the Porsche 959 is my all time favourite!😆😍
I had an Audi A2 1.4 for nearly 3 years, bought it for 700€, never put money in it only for gas and oil changes and sold in in January for 2700€ with about 20000km more. Was an amazing car. Buy one Mat!

Always had a soft spot for the Lagonda. Went to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, parked out Vauxhall Viva and got out the cheese butties. Lagonda pulls up in the row behind us, AML1 registration - opens boot, champers and shooting sticks. Such a difference. Remember getting back to the car after the race and peering into the cabin of the Lagonda through the window - oh how the other half live.
Nice list. Another favourite is the Standard Superior. Based on ideas by engineer Josef Ganz this car was advertised as the 'deutschen Volkswagen' and based on a prototype called the Maikäfer (May Beetle). It was shown at the 1933 Berlin motorshow, which was visited by Hitler and Porsche. A bunch of the ideas from the Standard Superior turned up in the VW Beetle, but since a lot of car manufacturers were working on these type of ideas, it can't be definitely proven Porsche stole ideas from Ganz, who was Jewish. Ganz fled to Switzerland and died in Australia a bitter man.
Why would you change 911 if its perfect already?
I think 911s are constantly one of the most controversial exterior design on a car especially the fascia. The love from the fans is huge, but so is the otherwise from the haters.
To make it up to date, faster, better technology, new exterior and interior, and compete with the new cars
@@AAMSFR technology and interior wise? They're already doing that. But to compete with exterior? As long as they're are fans out there that loves that shape to death, why would they change it?

Good selection of cars and potential warm welcome to the A2 ownership. The suspension is a bit stiff but it is certainly ahead of its time. The diesel A2s are more front heavy and I prefer the petrol with less front weight to swing about. Diesels great for high miler, petrol(Euro4) better around town and not subject to ULEZ. You probably won’t benefit as much but the rear seats of the A2 have great leg room for a city compact and are super easy to get in/out.

Actual Title: Some not good looking or good selling cars
The ds is beautiful and was a great seller
The EV1 never was sold, it was strictly under a leasing program without being able to buy them at the end of the leasing, because GM used it to test the market. The demand was growing and the consumer base was there (with some EV1 drivers wanting to make a 1 million dollar donation to GM to continue the production of the EV1) but because this program only applied to California and Arizona they only ended making around 1.100 units in total. They ended the're production and reposesed every single one after some oil company which i think was Chevron bought the pattent for the batteries because they feared the EV market would reduce the sales of ICE cars. Because they couldn't produce them anymore for the missing essential pattent they were obligated to end the EV1 program because they wouldn't be able to have replacement parts for the then very expensive replacement batteries. It's a really sad story of the EV1 and i would've hope they'd bring it back someday.. (this also included the Honda EV Plus and leased RAV4 EVs)
