7 Cheap Cars That Drive Like Supercars

If you want to go fast and have fun on a budget, these affordable sports cars are a great alternative to your dream supercar. They may lack the insane speed and power of Ferraris and Lambrghinis, but these cheap supercar lookalikes still offer plenty of style and performance on a budget.

  • Test drove an '05 Elise. Still my gold standard for steering and handling. Had 6,000 miles, $36K. Kept my MR2-S. A car that also should make this list. Still affordable used.

    @theapplepaul@theapplepaul7 ай бұрын
    • I had an MR2 Spyder as well - with the 2zz swap it was a monster. I hit 200whp (I think they had it set to the "optimistic" setting but I'll take it) on a dyno and 2200lb on a scale. A riot of a featherweight. I always wondered how the much more serious but surprisingly not that much lighter Elise would compare. For the performance the car was absurdly cheap - everything was small, common, and experienced very little wear. Even on mostly open throttle long drives on windy backroads for hours I never managed to get it under 20mpg - 30+ was easily achievable. Debaged it made many scratch their head or argue about what kind of "Porsche" it was. I never bought it for status but it certainly turned more heads than I expected. Miss it dearly.

  • I've had three of the cars on your list: the Lotus Elise, two BMW Z4s (but E89s - almost bought a Z4M coupe but got the Lotus instead), and the Audi TT. All of them are good choices. I can only speak of from new, though, so i can't weigh in on how they are to own now. Although, I did get my original TT back in 2017 when I got it back from a friend I sold it to in 2005. I ended up getting rid of it because my situation didn't allow me to do the work (boost leak and some electrical issues) it needed at the time, which was a shame, and I'm a perfectionist when it comes to cars. I am still in touch with a lot of the people who had or still have Lotuses and I really haven't heard too many horror series. They're so simple, it is hard for much to go wrong. That said, nothing on a Lotus is cheap. You can get away with some of it because of the Toyota sourcing, though the Toyota parts are why I don't still have mine. Overall, good work.

    • @WSKRBSCT - I'm considering buying a 2005 Audi TT with the 3.2 liter engine from a friend. He says that it should be very reliable despite having 140,000 miles. What would you say? What do yo like/dislike about yours and what would you say is a fair price for one that's in good mechanical condition, but with some paint issues and well worn seats?

  • You can get a Jaguar XKR 2007+ for under 30k. Designed by same guy who designed Aston Martins, 4.2 SC is 400hp, 5.0 SC is 510hp, Drives and handles like a dream, Grand touring cabin so no crawling in and out of it, can drive it cross country with no discomfort (I drove mine from Iowa to TN and didn't want to stop). I paid 17k for my 2012 XKR and sold it for the same price a couple years later. Very reliable car, no issues out of it, just needed something more practical to haul my family so I bought a Ford Raptor. Very under rated and overlooked car.

  • When the Elise came out Road and Track had it race around a track against a Ford Mustang Type R, with a supercharged 5 liter v8 making 500hp. The Elise beat the fucking shit out of the Mustang. When you give a car more power you make it quicker. But when you make a car lighter you make it faster, brake faster, handle better, better fuel economy. You improve everything.

The m113 is a strong engine that puts down good power and the platforms are generally fun to drive. I forget the year range but the mustang cobras around the early 2000’s. Equipped with a sc 4.7 and independent rear suspension. Early-mid 2000’s Mercedes sl 65 amg…..bc it’s a combination of both the best and most affordable quad turbo v12 platforms available.

  • Very good list. May I correct? Audi TT and Audi-3 are too small to fit the Audi Torsen (mechanical) Quattro, these two have the Swedish Haldex electric clutch type was fitted. This makes todays typical AWD a Haldex type where it's 99% Front Drive and the Rear auto engages when slip is detected. Under very aggressive driving steering Understeer can turn to Oversteer in an instant and without warning. Several Europe drivers died in the early TT from this. I believe the Haaldex type is called "quattro" (all lower case)

  • Buy C4's NOW! they are poised to spike in price DRAMATICALLY!!! So do yourself a favor, get one now, stick it in your garage and clean it up a bit, and wait a few years. It will resell for TONS more than what you paid.

  • Pepsi won all the taste tests (consistently) before companies with bigger marketing budgets used advertising to win audiences. I prefer whichever cola Im currently drinking and can easily change tastes to "prefer" to any brand. It only takes a month to transition to a different cola which will become the new favourite.

  • purchasing a car like the 968 for 20k would be a huge financial mistake for most people. you either buy one that's been meticulously kept up and spend a lot more or don't buy one at all.
