  • Fernando might not be the best teammate, but things are mostly political with his Team than with his teammates on track. Whereas for Ocon its always on track; crashing into your teammates or opponents unnecessarily(Max Verstappen crash while lapped) . I think Fernando tried his best to avoid downfall with his team mate this time. Even when Ocon was aggressive in Jeddah, he played it down. But things really got heated when he started having reliability issues one race after another. Because as far as he is concerned, he was losing time unnecessarily fighting with teammate when he has the pace to fight for positions higher in the order; Hungary was one such example. IMO, the fact that the team didn't do much to address his issues (reliability + Ocon defense) made him burst out . Because, this season Ocon never really had the pace in comparison with Fernando if not for the reliability issues

I'd say racing incident. 1) Ocon was faster than Max (He was on Sorts, Max was on Mediums) 2) Max regardless if it's a car on the lead lap or lapped doesn't have the right to cut someone's nose off. 3) Do I really think the penalty was justified at Ocon and not Max? Maybe but that would answer Reason 2 4) I do think though in Max's defense Ocon was being too optimistic in the Senna S because, he would've gotten DRS on the run to Turn 4.

  • He’s a hard teammate, last year both Alonso and Ocon worked as one, whether it’s Hungary or Losail they both worked as one which helped them a lot. That said Ocon has a motocross mindset. In moto when you are literally the provider of your family at such a young age, you almost develop like a parent cause in your mind “ that guy who passed me is taking food off our table”. You’re willing to be more aggressive and your teammate is the first person you wanna beat. A great documentary on it is Ryan Villopoto “ 2 to continued” you can find on KZhead. When you’re racing with that mindset, it’s never enough as Ocon seen in 2019 your opportunities can leave just faster than they’re given.

    @aaronmachado13@aaronmachado13 Жыл бұрын
    • In a way, you're definitely right about the motocross mindset. Like some motocross pros, Ocon didn't start his career with "f-k you" money unlike 18 of the 20 current drivers (the other being Hamilton, who is one of the most paid now). So, he feels that had he stay in Formula 1, he has to race hard all the time, even teammates. While many have put that against him, Alonso (Ocon's now-former teammate) is kinda the same way; the aggressive driving style and the "my way or the highway" approach. When those two personalities bump into another, 99/100 there will be drama.

Alonso is friends to this day with fisichella, and guys like massa and trulli have gone on beyond the grid to say they never had any personal problems with fernando. No problems for nelson piquet jr, button or kimi raikkonen or stoffel as well. Felipe was his longest teammate, and the only issue he had was that fernando became the team's centre stage and felipe was sidelined. If that's the case for judging how bad a teammate is, then michael schumacher was a bad teammate to rubens barrichello and lewis hamilton was a bad teammate to valtteri bottas. Fernando has never been a bad teammate. • I kinda understand Ocon. F1 is a sport where half the grid makes it there by being someone else's son, brother or niece. Many of them just have daddy buy them a spot in detriment of someone who actually earned the position. Ocon is a working class guy, his family literally sold their house so they could pay for his young career. Nobody important cares about him, he has to fight for his seat every single year. Proof of that is daddy Stroll buying Racing Point just to kick Ocon out and put Lance in, even though Ocon was twice the driver Lance was. It's not easy to make it to a place that is basically a rich kids' club when you are in there because of merits, not money; especially when you are not the best, just better than the rich kids. The only way to make it is by being relentlessly competitive and proving every single time that you are just so much better. And I say this as an Alonso fan - it's sad how their relationship ended up but I don't want to blame anyone.

  • The narrative around Ocon being a bad teammate is overblown imo. Yes, Ocon sometimes fights needlessly hard for positions. However, most of the incidents at Force India were caused by Checo. At Alpine, he's paired with Alonso who doesn't have the best track record when it comes to harmonious teammate relationships. 2007 showed us how much he can get rattled when a teammate matches or is faster than him. Ocon definitely should pick his battles more wisely but he's definitely not a 'bad' teammate in any sense.

  • Whilst Ocon definitely crossed the boundaries of how hard you can race your teammate with Alonso, I think most of Alonso's problems with Alpine aren't his fault. Alonso was hoping for a team that was serious about winning the title and Alpine are not willing to address their shortcomings rn. I think what upset Alonso most was the lack of faith Alpine showed in him, be it in Otmar blaming Alonso errors for his lack of points when Alonso blamed reliability issues or Alpine being unwilling to give him a multi-year deal because of his age. It's pretty clear that Alpine preferred Ocon to Alonso which seemed to be due to age and nationality rather than performance.

Ocon on the meanwhile has had competitive team mates. Checo, Alonso, Riccardo. Drivers who have either A. Been solidified as F1 material or prospect or B. A champion Do I think it's unfair to compare them? Yes. But, does that really mean Ocon is a bad teammate. Not necessarily, as said. Growing up with not a lot of wealth and being middle class similar to Hamilton. Who grew up in Stevenage (I might've said it wrong) which is 32 miles or roughly 55 km north of London. Gives you a mentality to perform. No doubt. So you can clearly see the frustration, the determination and how easy blood can boil. Yes, it does make his reputation negative but simultaneously. Do you really have a choice to not back down espically coming from humble and unforgiving times? • The issue is all of Esteban's teammates have been some of the most popular F1 drivers and some of the best on the grid. At Force India, Esteban was only at fault for Baku. However at Hungary, Spa, the team orders at Canada, and Singapore, you can all put those on Checo. But people revise this history to say Ocon was the centre of it. Maybe because majority of fans now didn't watch F1 in 2017/18, or maybe because Checo has become loved ever since Racing Point dropped him, but no one recognizes this. He had no issues with Daniel. And Alonso's toxic fanbase overblow every little incident between Alonso and Ocon to make Ocon the bad guy and it works because they're the bigger fanbase. Sure he can be over aggressive and it's a flaw but he's not a bad teammate. • This is a great video Aldas! Right off the bat, I think there's a vague misconception about what is "a good teammate". Barrichello is a prime example of what "a good teammate" is. Clear #2 driver, here to do everything he can for the #1, and bring consistent points. Yes, good PR is good, and make funny videos together is, I suppose, great for Formula 1 fans, but that's not what being a good teammate is all about. Being a good teammate can also be to share data or letting you teammate go pass you if he's faster. And for that, watching a lot of Ocon's onboards, I can absolutely, 100% tell you that this is the case. His haters will claim Hungary, and it's fair to say that he went too far in his defending against Fernando. That's fine. However, they never mention that the reason Fernando got passed him on lap 44 if I remember correctly, is because the team clearly told him to let him go, which he did. Ocon has always had very tough teammates, well rounded, accomplished and respected drivers. I think for him to stay on the show, which will never be through sponsors or rich backings, he has always had to fight for his spot. People think your teammate should be your friend. But no, your teammate is your 1st ennemy. That's the harsh reality, and there's a very fine margin between having to work with him for the greater good, and fighting him tooth and nails to keep your seat. Look at Tsunoda and Gasly for example. They get along fine, which is what the new wave of Formula 1 fans want. Cool and funny videos. But they touched at Silverstone, and it ended both of their races chances. I think it's a bit more serious that just a harsh defending in Hungary. Yet, nobody says "Tsunoda is a bad teammate", because these two get along really fine, which is, I suppose, all the Formula 1 fan wants. The past two years, data has shown that Alonso and Ocon was the closest pairing of the grid. And of course, being the closest pairing, you are ultimately bound to be close during the race. It's very easy to be a great teammate when you destroy your teammate, not so much when you are very close. And Ocon, who has had to fight with Perez when he was a rookie (by the way, the vast majority of their clashes on track was Perez fault), Ricciardo when he was prime Renault Ricciardo, and Alonso who is probably one of the greatest ever, has always has to have his elbows out in order for him to stay in the show. Now, if you are still reading this, I'd like to remind you a little event that happened in Monaco this year, and who is "a good teammate". Mick crashed. And Ocon got a 5 seconds penalty. After the restart, Alonso drove purposefully slow in order for Ocon not to get 5 seconds clear of Bottas and drop from the points. Of course this event is vastly forgotten, because it was Fernando who was at fault, and since is audience is much wider, it went very much under the radar. But it did happen. Now, just imagine if the roles were reversed. Just imagine the chaos it would have created on Social Media. You wouldn't hear the end of it. Ocon, not having the same audience, is always the culprit, but never the victim, and that's why I'm sick of these people claiming he is supposed to be the worst teammate that has ever existed, because people in general have their own propaganda agenda and would use anything to promote it. Thanks a lot for reading, and great video as always Aldas!

F1 needs good mid fielders, F1 will never have all 10 teams fighting for wins or podiums. So drivers like Gasly and Ocon should always stay in a mid field team like Alpine. The new drivers should start in a Williams or similar (like Russell) and if they prove themselves worthy they can get a seat in a top team. If there are decent they can replace an old or an ok driver in a mid field team (like Vettel retiring). If they are beaten badly (in the Williams or similar) by their teammate they should lose their F1 seat.

  • Sadly still reading Alonso is not a good teammate. The difference is Alonso does not need a teammate. He improve the car more than anyone. He is famous known to had heavy character inside the work. He only wants a competititve car, thats all. The problem is on the teams he has left. They were not able to give him a good car, he told us the reality about the bad cars he has had... thats the reason the teams says Alonso is a bad teammate, everybody wants him but not being at the same level of driver. Ocon should not forget who has given him his first (last) victory on F1... his bad teammate F. Alonso.

  • Seems every teammate Ocon has had ( DR no history in public anyway) has ended with problems. I'm betting the Gasly pair will end in tears it's just a matter of time.

  • With Gaslys pace and better mentality, i can see him becoming team leader within a year. I really hope so because that alpine outfit is trash culturally seeing as how some really great drivers bailed from that team, I hope Pierre can change that

  • Not really surprising he couldn’t get on with Checo due to the amount of times he put Esteban in the wall.

  • Funny how the guy has had problems with every team mate, he was always "doing all the work" yet most of the time he underperformed compared to those same drivers he downplayed😂😂 Esteban Bocon, lacking in class and performance in equal measures as always
