  • Piastri's rookie season is well and truly ahead of Norris. As you said Lando was up against a driver who was also in his first year at the team but not only that Sainz was only rated a good driver, he has never had the sort of hype about him that Lando gets. After the two years with Ricciardo, Lando's status as number 1 in the team is second only to Max. Consider also how many times Oscar was told to let Lando past. Yes, in many of those cases Lando was quicker which raises the question, why was he behind Oscar in the first place? Often because Lando made a mistake where Oscar didn't. Oscar is already showing improvement in his racing and tyre management. The final race is a great example. Once again Oscar was ahead and let Lando through and Lando immediately went in to tyre management mode leaving Oscar to try and hold off Russell. Lando didn't even pretend to pressure Leclerc for second place.

  • It’s tricky because he’s had a better car at times than a rookie has had in a long while, and he’s not outperformed his teammate like others did but he had one of the toughest a rookie has had. But he has been very impressive, proved McLaren made the right call (not because Ricciardo is bad, just wasn’t the right fit) and I’m really interested to see how he can step up next year. Hamilton’s is entirely a different league [EDIT] and will just never be comparable to how rookies join now. Russell didn’t get to jump into the Merc in 2019 with a ton of testing for example. Verstappen is not the 17 year anymore he was once (and he is open he will not drive till his 40's). Think the likes of the others (Norris, Leclerc and Russell) think Piastri can be the Verstappen to Hamilton (dethrone the king)...just like with Verstappen you can see it's a story written in front of us. • @@henrywilliams8313 Lando had seven podium , 6 of which were second, in 11 races. In the second half of the season he was the second highest points scorer to Max. That is the definition of consistently outperforming by a lot! Otmar in a recent interview with Peter Windsor said Oscar drove well for a rookie but Lando was exceptional.

    • @@bjs7442 I guess we can say the same thing about norris' rookie season too. He only scored half the points of sainz too and consistently outperformed him by alot, only out racing him 4 times that season. The reality is neither rookie was consistently out performed by alot. You judge driver's season not by points but by looking at how they performed each weekend and both rookies had a fair few weekends where they were on par or simply better than their teammate that weekend. So that's not called consistently outperforming by alot or being destroyed by your teammate, especially considering 2nd half of season piastri has been a match or very close on one lap pace like norris was in rookie season. I can name a few weekends where piastri was better, spa, monza(would've outqualfied and outraced him if not for unfair undercut), qatar, saudi, vegas and more where he was on par or very close. Norris too, long time ago so can't remember. Just worth noting, don't take any word otmar says about oscar seriously, both would hate each other after the fall out from last year, so ofc anything otmar says about oscar will be bias against him.

Plus, a top ten finish in a season that was completely dominated by a single driver is nothing to be critical about at all. He gets an A- from me for his first season. It's not like he got no sense of humor either, a P1 video with Matthew Gallagher had them design their dream circuits, and at one point Oscar went like: "This corner seems unassuming, but it actually has like 30 degrees of banking and it's flat out." And he said it in such a chill but sarcastic way that it's comical to me, made me laugh out loud.

  • Yes , Agree with you. I also think despite his race pace and tire management improved a bit ( compare to Lando) , It wasn't as much as i hoped . It could be down to the fact most tracks he raced in the 2nd half were the tracks he's neven been to , and whenever there were triple headers ( Brazil, US , Mexico ) , he litterally had not driven even in the factory simulator in UK. But one thing I wish to see from Mclaren is to offer a bit more help to oscar in tyre management . I've seen Will Joseph ( Lando's Race Eng ) was more vocal and providing more guidance (to change this/that button ) to Lando in his early years , which i don't see in Oscar's Radio conversations. Also, looking at the lap times, Oscar seems able to match Lando's laptimes in races, but here and there he's having 0.5 to 1s , off laps which seems the killer for him . Not sure if they were due to mistakes /lock ups but this is an area i like to see Oscar to improve..

Mika H always complimented DC with doing the initial work to make a car he could then adjust to suit him and he would struggle with getting that original starter point as he would have went with something that would be brilliant but flawed and would work one day and then hopeless the next…..

I mean he got two Podiums which none of the others achieved in their rookie season and a Sprint Race win (something Norris has failed to do to this day) and he finished higher in the WDC-Rankings than all of them in their first season despite the grid being much more competitive in the mid- to backfield now than it was back then. He's also not shy of saying that he is trying to learn from Lando, particularly when it comes to managing the whole race, rather than just being fast and hoping the tyres will hold out. It would definitely not surprise me that, given the car to do it, he one day wins the title. Of all the non-title winners on the grid, there's only a handful I can _easily_ see win it - again, given the right tools (car, engine, and as important, the right team); Lando being one of the others - George & Charles (if his luck ever turns!) being the other "most likely" ones. There are a few it wouldn't surprise me if things were pretty much perfect for them, like Alex and Carlos, but any others would shock me. The fact that after a year Oscar is in my "more likely than not" future champ list without the need for consideration, says a lot to me about how he goes about his job. I'm very impressed.

He's matured, learned how to defend like a boss (cleanly), and given the opportunity (if the car is up for it, more than if he is), he can overtake with the best of them. He was in the RB car too early; two seasons at AT would have had him ready for the big team. IMHO only, of course. I say this as a neutral, btw. I think there are many terrific talents on the grid. I know there are drivers who've never had the car to get them to the line first, and probably never will (poor, dear Hulk... Though his Le Mans win showed his skills in all areas), but I genuinely think they're skilled enough. There are only a few I _don't_ think are good enough, shy of a topsy-turvy race: think Monaco '96. Panis was a _good_ driver, but never a _great_ one. And though at the time I was a genuine Damon fangirl [my last ever time as a fan; when he retired, I became a neutral]- he had Charles' luck at Monaco! - I was honestly pleased for Panis. Given what happened to him at Canada soon after, it made that victory all the sweeter. But without the rain, Damon's car eating its own engine, etc., I think he'd have ended his career winless. There are a number of drivers on the grid today much like him (that's my impression of them). Alex, however, is not in that league, I think he's honestly in the potential race and even championship winning league. Perhaps along the lines of Button. This is, of course, opinion and speculation, and we're all entitled to our own. In the meantime, I wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous new year!
