Though the 1974-75 nighttime series would go until September, on January 3rd 1975, the gong sounded for the original Jeopardy! series. In this episode are challengers Debby and Robin and 3 time champion John competing for the very last original daytime championship.
I understand NBC and Sony own the rights to this piece of media, and that this may get removed. However, do enjoy this finding my viewers for as long as you can, thank you!
Thank you all so very much for watching. I have an announcement, though I was originally going to announce it later. On may 1st 2024, in honor of Art Fleming’s 100th birthday, I will be releasing a video of a homemade Jeopardy game to celebrate it. Stay tuned.
Nah, you gonna be replaced by robots in 2050

Is it another episode of Fleming in it?
@@derekbrouillard7143the special has some of his highlights outside of Jeopardy!
January 3, 1975: The final episode of the Art Fleming version of Jeopardy! airs on NBC during NBC Daytime, as John, Robin, and Debby compete. Instead of introducing the contestants, announcer Don Pardo appears on camera introducing host Art Fleming. After introducing Art Fleming, he welcomes the show before the game begins. After the Jeopardy! round and before Double Jeopardy!, Fleming shows the greatest moments in the daytime run on NBC, such as the 2,000th Jeopardy! episode in 1972, and the final game of the National College Scholarship contest. After the Final Jeopardy! round and before the closing credits, host Art Fleming gives a message as he signs off for the last time. After the host signs off, "Smile" by Frank Chaksfield and His Orchestra plays as the closing credits rolled over a shot of the darkened empty Jeopardy! set.👍
This is kinda sad… it made me tear up a little.
Could he believe we'd all meet again in 2023? Super! Thank you.
Alex Trebek is a legend, and made Jeopardy! the hit it is today, but Art Fleming was such an excellent host. Just such a kind, intelligent, classy man. NBC's game show block in the 60s-70s was full of classics. Concentration, Hollywood Squares, this, and of course Wheel of Fortune, which took the place of this show. All of them lasted 10+ years, which was frankly unheard of for a daytime game show back then. This version of Jeopardy! was less about money and more about celebrating intelligence. Kind of like how many forget that Bill Cullen was the original host of The Price is Right because of how great of a host Bob Barker was, many shouldn't forget that Art Fleming was the original host of Jeopardy!, even with how great Alex was.
Art did a better job imo , but I get your point.
Don Pardo went on to become the announcer for "Saturday Night Live". He also made a cameo appearance on Weird Al Yankavik's parody song "I Lost on Jeopardy!".
@@raymondhopwood9393 He also announced both this and The Price is Right, two of the longest running game shows of all time (so did Johnny Gilbert).
If it wasn't for Art Fleming, we probably wouldn't have Jeopardy! or it's fan base to help ratings.
@@KiddBloo86 Merv Griffin and his wife was responsible for Jeopardy. They had a discussion on a flight from New York to Deluth, MN. They discussed the fact that there were no quiz shows since the scandals of the 1950’s where the contestants were given the answers, his wife said “Lets give them the answers, but they have to come up with the questions!” Merv pitched the idea to NBC and the bought the show without a pilot. The reasons for the name Jeopardy was when a prospective sponsor told him, there were not enough jeopardies in the show.
Finally... the real Jeopardy and the real host comes to KZhead.
I miss those old shows, now that was wholesome television.
ONCE AGAIN!! THANK YOU BOTH ART FLEMING AND ALEX TREBEK FOR OVER 11,000 +EPISODES FROM ALL 3 VERSIONS OF JEOPARDY UNTIL BOTH OF YOUR PASSINGS!! RIP!!
As a 59 yr old, my childhood television memories did include, among the very few, Art Fleming hosting 'Jeopardy'. Our basic lineup was ABC, CBS, NBC, and PBS, if the weather was mild. Otherwise, one of us, usually the youngest, had to go outside and turn the aerial (antenna) until the signal came back to clarity), who was also the one to have to jump up and change the channel (no remote controls in that day) . Some of the most popular programs in our era, in no particular order (don't recall the shows to networks) : The Ed Sullivan Show, The Carol Burnett Show, The Flip Wilson Show, The Galloping Gourmet (Julia Child), Sesame Street, The Electric Company, The Price Is Right (with Bob Barker with brown hair and Chevy Vega prizes worth $3800), The Dean Martin Roast, Laugh In, etc. etc. etc. Those were the days....never to return.
We got only CBS. We had rabbit 🐰 ears.
@@TheSaltydog07 I recall rabbit ears as well, but I guess we were "high fallutin'" since we had an outside antennae! LOL
Wow, that’s a remarkable memory. We lived in the suburbs of our stations’ city - in sight of the transmitters a couple of miles away in nearby hills, so reception was not an issue (through high winds still gave us those ghost images.) … One clarification - Julia Child was the French Chef. It was Graham Kerr who was the Galloping Gourmet.
@@brianarbenz1329 You're right, my bad. IDK how I managed to get the two confused, since we mostly watched chef Julia, and rarely watched chef Graham. Further, as a teen/young adult, I did enjoy watching Louisiana cooks Justin Wilson, and chef Paul Prudhomme. I learned a great deal from these two as I came along in my journey with and for the love of southern cooking at my mother's and grandmother's sides.😉
@@ginadisbrow9324 My Mom and I _loved_ watching Justin Wilson, I gaaa-ron-teee!
Don Pardo would continue on for three decades as the announcer for Saturday Night Live.
He is a Hollywood national treasure, and worthy of a star on the 'Walk of Fame' if not already.
He had been an announcer for NBC Radio as early 1937.
He also sadly broke the news on NBC that President Kennedy was shot.
@@adamantman3200 Also broke the news on NBC that President John F. Kennedy was shot. Pardo had a lifetime contract with the network.
Don Pardo had a lifetime contract with NBC. Only the very best get such an honor.
Art Fleming - a real pro! This is how it’s done.
Truly
Thank you for posting this show. Art Fleming was great: fast, personable, funny, non-condescending and just sincere. Only Ken Jennings has fitted that mold since then.
Love the paper cup holders ❤
They played this every day in my school lunchroom during lunch. It just happened to be on during that time. That was years before VCRs.
Thank you! I was watching J! from day one. I was 8 yrs. old, and already hooked.
My mom was on the show the previos May. We had the encyclopedias for almost 40 years. I wish that show existed
I remember watching the original Jeopardy. I really prefer Art Flaming.
Me too
Worthy of correct spelling of his name: Art Fleming
You know what would have been a finishing touch to this video: the 1962 NBC Laramie Peacock with the greeting: "The following program is brought to you in living color on NBC!" (even if they had a short version at the time) and then Pardo would announce Fleming for one last time on the original daytime show.
Art was the best. Great 70s game show.
I remember watching the original Jeopardy on NBC daytime when I was just a child. I had just turned 8 years old 2 weeks or so prior to this finale airing so I was at school when this was on. But I remember as a youth so often being frustrated that they never seemed to clear the entire board. Just once I had wanted to see that. Still a real treat to see this finale. The sad song at the end still chokes me up. Thank you for this.
They actually did complete the board in an episode here on KZhead. See the Ann/Larry/Norma game (show #2574). Oh and also you’re very welcome.
Wow, thank you so much for uploading this! I've been looking for the whole 1975 final episode for ages! It must've been very sad that it ended at the time. Thank goodness it came back 9 years later! (Officially, anyway) :)
This is spooky. As soon as Art said what the Final Jeopardy category was, I knew what the answer would be. And I was right.
Mel Brooks still watches Jeopardy!
I remember the very first Jeopardy in 1964. I was five old, but I vividly recall it. The biggest problem they had was explaining to the viewers how it worked. Since people might be turning in throughout it, Art would periodically say: “This is Jeopardy, the show where we give the answers and the contestants have to tell us the questions.”
I love the glasses of celebratory beer. That’s the ‘70s for you!
This is the Jeopardy I remember as a kid. I was all of 8 years old when this aired and I only got to watch it during summer breaks and if/when I was home because I was sick or during Christmas breaks and it was definitely over my head as an 8 year old but there was something relaxing and hypnotizing about listening to the flips of the numbers and Art Fleming's voice that made this show a must watch for me back in the day. Lol!!!!
Glad to hear your perspective
0:02 - Don Pardo in an on-camera appearance
He was on camera in a corner of the WNBC news studio when he was the Announcer for Live At Five on Channel 4 in New York.
He gave the answers, but I couldn't get the questions right
Those audience shots, wow, were we all thin back then! What the heck have we been eating?
Back then, fast food was a treat you got once a week, soda didn't have high fructose corn syrup, and preservatives in food weren't really a thing yet.
RIP!! ART FLEMING DON PARDO MERV GRIFFIN & ALEX TREBEK!! WOW!! JEOPARDY,S ORIGINAL FINAL.DAYTIME SHOW 2,753!!
Quite a coincidence that Art Fleming & Alex Trebek entered eternal slumber from both the same disease, pancreatic cancer. Art was only 71, Alex 80, and Don Pardo a robust 96. It goes to show that past age 40, see your primary doctor on a regular basis, you'll get blood tests and imaging, but if problems can be caught early, your chances of a long survival are greatly enhanced.
Thanks for posting. Old episodes are taken down all the time now.
Alex Trebek became the host of jeopardy a decade later!
The winner of the 1967 National College Scholarship Contest was Josh Ard (A Senior from Carroll High School located in Ozark, AL and he graduated back in 1967.)
As you may have noticed that his son in law said that he still has it as of today. (I don’t know if it is either in an audio recording, home movie recording, or Full Audio and Video Recording.) The question that Art Fleming asked was “Since addition of Alaska and Hawaii, our geographic center is in this state.”
I feel sorry for Robin because that was a final episode of the original Jeopardy run and she won’t be able to come back to play again, not even on the nighttime version that time Original Jeopardy airs.
Great find!
He did return, on the zaz film, Airplane!
Watched when it aired. It's a bummer the original commercials weren't included. It was a great way to end a very successful show.
One of the things I like about the old Jeopardy! is that it's not a game of "push the buzzer at the precise time to win" like the modern day version has become. It was about speed and risk. Do you push the button right away, and how fast can you know the answer? That first season with Alex, when it still went by the old rules, was FAST. Now so many of these "super champions" are masters not just because of knowledge, but because they know when to hit the buzzer at the right time. As great as Ken and James are, I wonder if the buzzer part was taken out of the equation would it even the playing field. It's just not as fun (and I know the reason it was done was due to a suggestion by Alex to make it easier for people at home to play along with, but that didn't seem to hurt the Art Fleming version, so...)
I agree
10:44-The 1967 College Week!!!
I WAS ONLY 2 YEARS OLD GOING ON 3 YEARS OLD IN 1975 WHEN THE ORIGINAL.DAYTIME JEOPARDY ENDED!! "The answer is...THE MAYFLOWER."
That is a reference from "Airplane! II: The sequel" as Art Fleming has a cameo role in the film.
Art Fleming was the first that’s why when they restarted the game I watched the game again and I remember the answer is
It would be replaced by another GS created by Merv Griffin Wheel of Fortune that would premiere on Monday January 6th!
This is the original Jeopardy that not many people will remember but me. They care more about intelligence than the cash. The other thing was people could ring in when the clue was exposed and during the first season of this current version had that rule. Everything changed with the 2nd season.
It’s unfortunate that not many people are interested in seeing what is ultimately the better Jeopardy!
Robin would have to wait nine years for her second appearance - if she were even remembered by the time Alex Trebeck took the stage.
How many people were on both versions of Jeopardy?
@@DTD110865 Almost certainly none, though that would be interesting to find out. Some of the original Jeopardy contestants may have been allowed to try out for the later version. But even for people who pass the try outs (I know of two people who tried out), it's a very long shot to ever get on the show.
@@smashwhammyyes indeed, Burns Cameron, who as a matter of fact appeared on the 2000th episode of Fleming’s Jeopardy!
I know this isn't gonna make me popular, but while it's great this was found, I'd like someone to find and post the show that aired the following week. I think my fellow gameshow fans know what I'm talking about.
@@StabelliA Stranger things have happened, KZhead has become a place where lots of "Lost" Media has turned up everything from commercial promos to full movies. In fact a whole bunch of lost Woolery episodes have turned up here, but sadly still very few.

They must have operated the board with toggle switches. There's no mistaking that click.
It was actually just a couple of men pulling the cards but good on you for speculating.
Don Pardo was THE MAN!
Can someone please identify the young man at 10:55 who was from Houston (KPRC)? I'm a 3rd generation native Houstonian and it would be great if I could find out who he was. Thanks!
“John, being a journalist you don’t need that kind of money, do you?” *Incorrect.* The correct question is: Why would Art think journalists are loaded?
Maybe they were back in the day???
Jeopardy with Art Fleming met again on NBC in the fall of 1978 but his return flopped after 5 months.
The screwed around with the format. Dropping one contestant for Double Jeopardy and replacing Final Jeopardy with the ridiculous Super Jeopardy round ... people wanted the show they loved, not that.
Is that Johnny Gilbert announcing?
No it’s Don pardo
Robin got ripped off, unless she was able to continue being Jeopardy champion on another version of the show. The $700 she did win is like winning $4,000 in 2023, so not bad for 30 minutes work.
She wasn't the first, nor the last, contestant who wasn't able to defend their title due to the show being cancelled. I'm sure there is something in the paperwork that states this risk.
