A Day With Alex Trebek Behind The Scenes Of 'Jeopardy!'
In February of 2017, Senior Video Correspondent Graham Flanagan spent a day behind the scenes of “Jeopardy!” at Sony Pictures Studios in Los Angeles.
On March 6, 2019, Alex Trebek, the 78-year-old host of “Jeopardy!,” announced that he has been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. In a video message posted to the long-running game show’s KZhead channel, Trebek delivered the news with transparency, humor, and optimism.
“I plan to beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease,” Trebek said in the video message. “Truth told, I have to! Because under the terms of my contract, I have to host “Jeopardy!” for three more years!”
In addition to being present for the five episodes that were taped that day, Flanagan got to spend a limited amount of one-on-one time with Trebek, who has been hosting the show since 1984.
He got an inside look at Trebek’s pre-show routine, and got the iconic host to open up about his diet, his passion for labor-intensive housework, and the reason he’s never lost his passion for hosting “Jeopardy!” after more than 7,000 episodes.
Flanagan also recorded Trebek’s interactions with the live studio audience during commercial breaks, wherein he takes unscripted questions. “No subject is taboo,” Trebek said.
This visit to the “Jeopardy!” set came the day after a category that featured Trebek reciting rap lyrics went viral, making headlines due to his deadpan delivery of verses by artists like Drake and Lil’ Wayne.
Business Insider released a series of short videos produced from the footage captured in 2017. After Trebek’s announcement regarding his health status captured the minds and hearts of the show’s massive audience, Flanagan returned to the footage he shot that day to create a new, extended chronicle of his experience.
Some of the footage featured here was included in the previously-released videos, and some of it is being seen for the first time.

A Day With Alex Trebek Behind The Scenes Of 'Jeopardy!'
Alex seems so fake-grumpy that it’s hysterical. He’s so dry but you can tell he really loves his job.
He didn't seem happy about being taped. Jeopardy viewers enjoy this. I was glad to see behind the scenes
@@TheMjphoto45 I want to say its because it's early in the morning, They shot it at around 6:30 i'm sure we all would sound the same.
It’s not fake. I was on the show and he’s a huge asshole. Rude and arrogant.
@@jenniferkondrat7988 why Jennifer...what was your experience with him?
A relative of mine was on the show. He said Trebek's off camera personality was pretty much the same as what you see on the show. Very direct, no humor, and seemed somewhat of a cold fish.
Pancreatic cancer did not answer in the form of a question so it will not be accepted.
Very clever. You should be a writer.
He is a walking museum of urbane wit and courtesy. "KNOWLEDGE IS VALUABLE."
I’m not intelligent enough to comment.. But I kinda did.
@@paystarbuzzy So very well said, and truly sums up the man we get to see promoting knowledge on a daily basis, which is not so common in today's world.
@@jadore8789 thanks
Jesus Christ, this video is pure gold. No music, no fancy editing. Everything is perfect. It’s like a home VHS video but better quality. Like a grandson filming his grandad. This is the way it should be. This behind the scenes is a treasure. I am so glad this is video taped. We can remember and learn from it if Jeopardy continues in the future without Trebek. And you can tell that he is truly such an intelligent, wise person. Just listening to him go over the game for that day is so fascinating. The process and what it takes, anyone else can easily mess it up and make so many mistakes... but Trebek, Trebek is THE man for it.
Didn't alex get a DUI? Who hasn't. He's just that bright he drinks. Cancer sucks. So does mortality.
This feels like take your kid to work day
I cant imagine how sad the producers and writers must be too lose someone so close to them.
I bet the executive producer that gave a tribute had a hard time saying "Goodbye Alex"
They had to know it was coming. It was just a matter of when. Glad he was able to live longer than Dr gave a timeline for
The show is successful because it is objective and neutral. Encourages knowledge. Accurate. Factual. Trebek is accurate and articulate.
For sure. I watched videos on the CNN and Fox News KZhead channels after the cancer announcement and they were both very positive and supportive. That's incredibly rare today.

@@alextrebek3633 interesting, would you care to share your foundations for this assertion, and please include your citations. if they're all socialists, dont' bother
Neutral?? The questions definitely have a left slant. You must be democrat because you didn't notice.
@@toscodav Well spotted, I must say.
How about announcer Johnny Gilbert! 94 years old and kicking!
Johnny's 94?! Damn!!!
@@pi_beta7306 I would love to meet the man. Or have an address to send to the studio or somewhere to write him a card. The only other announcers/voiceover people I remember working past their 90's, Thurl Ravenscroft (Tony The Tiger), he died last decade and Don Pardo (bast known for being Saturday Night Live's announcer) was like 94 as well when he passed on about 5 years ago (The forensic Files guy was also 90+ I remember. Going back to Gilbert, I first remember him announcing on the game show "Chain Reaction" in 1980.
@@ryanstrnad8442 The Sony lot sits between Washington and... nuts, which other street? I think Culver, in Culver City. The address that they used to give on-air for various reasons is 10202 West Washington Blvd, Culver City CA 90232, which is also the address Google gives for the Sony studio tour. And of course, who can forget that Don Pardo was Jeopardy's original announcer? And Price is Right, back in the 50s when Bill Cullen hosted, way before the Bob Barker reboot in 1972.
Ryan Strnad Really is he 94.He is still so robust.
@@bubujooestes1499 look him up. Went back to the 50's. even hosted a show or two along the way.
Alex Trebek everybody. Intelligent and wise. Never forgotten. RIP sir. 💔
I adore this. It amazes me how laid back the whole production is. The clues are printed on paper instead of being displayed on a fancy computer sponsored by some company, his makeup was quick and easy, and they have a ton of books for clue research. Alex is as much of the process of creating the show's clues as the people who write them, instead of just being the host. No one seems to be the stereotypical Hollywood juggernaut that we're used to. It's a quaint and straightforward production; there's no drama, no sponsors, and the host's personality isn't the main driver of the show. I love this show so much and I wish more television was like it. I really appreciate you guys for making this and releasing the extended version!
hetr it’s such a tightly run ship. The contestant handlers are fantastic and each episode is shot in about 40 minutes. (Compare that to the US version of The Chase. Each episode took 4 hours to shoot.) They make the entire production look easy.
Alex is still checking the dictionary for definition of words.I use the computer or Smart phone. So original so brilliant.
They do a lot of makeup. He is not fun to interview. So serious but I like him.
There is research that shows you remember things better on paper and if you write rather than using a computer. It also produces more creativity.
I detect a difference in his personality before/after the Jeopardy suit
I can’t believe when someone asked if he had any plans to retire soon he was like no do you know something I don’t and then in November he actually retired since the pancreatic cancer got worse on him. He didn’t deserve to die by having cancer. Rip Alex Trebek. You’ll never be forgotten! July 22nd, 1940 - November 8th, 2020 😭😭😭
He seems like a grumpy guy that doesn't want to be bothered, but as soon as he gets on stage, he changes. His voice gets smoother, and he seems very charismatic!
when out of the public eye he is a very private and seclusive man
You'd be grumpy, too, if you were trying to do your job but had some stooge following you around asking largely inane questions and to read rap lyrics. (Seriously?)
The grumpiness and social awkwardness is exactly how I imagined him
Michael Silbert Wow really?! His interview showed his real self/ serious & just dry
jonathan bell YOU DO NOT WANT TO MESS WITH A PERSON IN FRONT OF A BIG BOOK OF CLUES. IF YOU WANT TO BOTHER ME, BRING ME A DOZEN DONUTS & A COLD 12 PACK OF DIET COKE LOL!!! 🙂
"You look soo Scandinavian" "Thank you ..."
Flanagan? That's Irish.
Why was that part about the shooter bing Scandinavian left in? Made no sense to the story.
That made me jealous.
I think it was hilarious! Plus at the end when you see him he does look Scandinavian.
@@alanbelcher6568 Parts of Ireland do have a lot of Viking ancestry, I suppose.
Some said Alex seemed grumpy. He's not grumpy. He's actually just being himself, not turned up to level 10 for a TV camera, he's also focused on his real work. The work that happens off camera so he can be GREAT on camera. I have the utmost respect for this man and I wish him NOTHING but the best in his fight against Cancer.
I remember when I went to my first taping of Jeopardy and when they went to commercial break Trebek just came up to the audience and started making random witty jokes/remarks. It was amazing, giving him all my support as he destroys cancer!
How do you see Jeopardy in person?
Doubt it, you just watched the other video

What a charming and down to earth man. How blessed are we that we got to see this man teach us on television for these all these years. R.I.P. Alex. We love you!!!
I would’ve loved to have been a contestant on Jeopardy when Alex was alive. I probably wouldn’t have gotten very many answers right but it would’ve been awesome to meet him anyway.
Who’s here after his death? He was such an interesting guy.
Yeah...

No one will be just as good as Alex, it would take 33 years to be just as good as him. Alex will always be the best Jeopardy host we had. Rest in peace Alex.
I’m so sad about this. Both my cousin and uncle were on jeopardy and I got to watch them live in the audience and meet Alex. May he rest in peace
He didn't need the glasses to read the clues
He doesn't seem grumpy to me. He's just busy working.
I think he is just sick of the terrible interview person. I would be too.
Well he has a busy schedule. It would get stressful, so having a camera in there behind the scenes would add to that stress. He seems more focused on doing his job well.
It was incredibly nice of Mr. Trebek and team for allowing this to happen. Fascinating.
I was sadder about Alex Trebek's death than I was saddened about the death of any other person that I have never met before and even some that I knew. He was like a close family member and I know that many people share my sadness because they think of him in the same way. In this world of negative people and their negative influences, he was a consistent, calm, positive presence, and for that there are few people more worthy of our affection. There will never be a person that can fill his shoes completely. RIP Alex, you made a positive impact on my life.
Everyone is effected by celebrities differently...
I don't think he was that grumpy like others are saying. Being interviewed is usually awkward for most celebrities. I think it went well on both sides. Thanks for this Graham! I
I didn't see him as grumpy either, just a regular guy at 8:00 in the morning. Most people only see the "Alex Trebek" character. (Howard Stern said people are shocked that he is not his radio character in real life.)
@@buckosoft I think the beginning was shot even earlier than that. He says he gets to the office at 6 and they go into a meeting at 7:30. The beginning would be filmed some time around 6 AM. Of course he's gonna have a "grumpy" morning voice!
Alex, I think, was just so smart that, when he's in his zone and doing the prep work for the games, he's focusing so much on the task that he doesn't quite sound as sociable in his speech as he does on stage.
A true example of passion and dedication. I’m Brazilian, living in Brazil, and really seek to watch the show whenever I can. He will truly be missed. Forever an icon. Farewell…
Eloquent, funny and classy. RIP Alex, you will surely be missed.
I detect a difference in his personality before/after the Jeopardy suit
Randy Barrett Me too!
Same with Freddie Mercury, nothing new.
I think here He's mainly focused on the work, but he's not giving abrupt answers just giving the minimal amount of attention

RIP Alex. Thank you for touching and impacting so many lives with your work!!
Very interesting to see the behind-the-scenes. Trebek takes his work seriously and enjoys it just as much. Loved the unscripted questions from the audience. Also, that is a well-written description of the video.
They always do the questions from the audience prior to each episode.
For 10 mil a year which is his salary; I'd give up everything in my life right now for that job. Instant workaholic.
Im never exercising again

Alex Trebek was by far one of the CLASSIEST people ever to walk the Earth.
He's Canadian that's why...ie. not American!
Yes and David Attenborough.
His voice totally changed between the beginning and when he got to the stage.
I cant imagine how sad the producers and writers must be too lose someone so close to them.
A fascinating look behind the scenes of this show and its host. Neat to see Alex as just a regular guy in his office and around the set. I really enjoyed this sneak peek.
i already have seen this video but i had to come back and watch again. miss you already Alex
R.I.P. Alex. You were so dedicated to your craft, and just as inspiring to watch.
We miss you Alex! I miss you Alex!! RIH🙏🏽❤❤❤❤

What a gem he is. Thank you for doing this.
When you have a guy like Alex Trebek and a game show like Jeopardy!, it’s like puzzle pieces, they both fit together perfectly!
Forever in my heart, Alex! I adore this man, this show and how his fans express such adoration for him as well. Healing vibes galore!
Imagine walking onto that stage 7500 times. What a legend.
An absolute icon. He is extremely witty and intelligent. There will never be someone like him
This hits different now.
You can see how much he is involved and loves what he does ; much more than a ‘job’ for sure.
Alex acts grumpy but you can tell he was actually a really nice person. The world is poorer for having lost him.
Rest in peace to the guy I've been watching since childhood
What if Jeopardy went behind the scenes of Alex Trebek.
Dagan Ward damn

ohh that would be nice
There would be a lot of Kebert Xela that's for sure
My mom, myself and my grandfather watch jeopardy together every night that it's on, followed by Wheel of fortune. I just can't imagine not hearing his voice every night anymore.
👍😍Soooo this is how he looks flawless. I didn’t expect him to be a “handyman”, such an awesome guy, not Pretentious at all!! I love him. 🤗💞🤗
Thank you for this video. This was a fantastic insight and truly enjoyable. May Alex continue for another 30 years!
Thank you for this. The audience interaction was the best part. RIP Alex.
I ADORE Alex!!!! I just sat and cried when he released that video!!! I pray he defies all odds!!!
What a good sport, a "gamer" and a guy who's down for fun. Many men his age would get all grumpy and scrunch their face up if asked to recite rap lyrics. Mr. Trebek does it with enthusiasm and vigor. You know he's going to be *EVEN MORE* popular now with the recent health news. Everyone is going to be pulling for him.
Going miss him so much R.I.P Alex may GOD be with you thank you for everything you have done for your fans

I never like his mustache, but I thought he looked great in the beard that he grew recently.
What a great piece to have...and look back on. I’ve watched Alex in various game shows all of my life. Tremendous guy. May he rest well!
Fantastic behind the scenes/interview. Thank you!
The final taping was less than 2 weeks before he passed away, his mind was sharp right up to the end.

Thank you for this special look behind the scenes. I was looking forward to attending a taping of a show earlier this year and had tickets for April--before it got shut down by COVID. This about makes up for it. RIP Alex.
Rest In Peace Alex we love you❤️
I love the dynamic here. Sort-of-nervous, excited young reporter and calm, jaded old staff. It feels so real, like how else do you take a camera into an environment like this and ask questions? Nervously, afraid to intrude, it feels so familiar and homey. I'm sure that sweet office of people was rocked by Alex's death, as was the world. But I hope they get to go on and make things feel normal again
thanks for the memories

Yes- Alex was very much known to be against Racism and the like- but yet he was gentle on the subject, but notice the look on his face when he said that. That expression as compared to baseline indicated contempt for the terminology used.
The show is beloved in large part because of it's host. God speed and get well Mr. Trebek.
This was absolutely amazing to watch!! I've always wanted a inside look into what Alex reads behind the podium and how it's put together, his process for preparing for a show and his personality behind the scenes. I remember when he read those raps on TV, they were developed into memes before the next morning lol and to close this behind the scenes episode with more raps from the Migos, DJ Khaled and The King & Queen of Music (Jay Z and Beyonce) with such flow,.....OMG, *****APPLAUSE***** ALEX TREBEK YOU'RE THE GREATEST!!! #LongLiveAlexTrebek #LongLiveJeopardy

It's a very nice touch having a picture of Art Fleming behind him! I used to watch him on CBC in Toronto. He hosted a game show called " Reach for the To". Kind of a GE College Bowl for high school kids. Prayers for his health.
I love that announcer equally. Fellow uottawa -er👍👍 Ugh, I love him. So articulate and thoughtful also funny. Fight that cancer!!!
Alex is the brightest dude. He was cool and loved my fellow utah guy ken jennings.
I will watch this again and again. Any person that loved his job like Alex Trebek should be able to live forever. He was so down-to-earth. You can tell he was extremely serious about the quality of the show and it was demonstrated with every taping. That is what made Jeopardy the favorite game show of all time. I had no idea of his love for remodeling. Wish he could have been my neighbor, would have loved his conversations and dry sense of humor. Alex, if anyone can ever fill your shoes, I will be amazed.
