UFC 182: Jones vs. Cormier was a mixed martial arts event held on January 3, 2015, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The event was headlined by a Light Heavyweight Championship bout between the champion at that time, Jon Jones, and top contender Daniel Cormier.
Jones was initially scheduled to face Alexander Gustafsson in a rematch on September 27, 2014, at UFC 178. However, Gustafsson pulled out of the bout due to a knee injury and was replaced by Daniel Cormier. Subsequently, on August 12, Jones pulled out of the bout against Cormier citing a leg injury, which in turn led to the rescheduling of the pairing to this event.
One of the most historic beefs in MMA's history started with a straightforward phrase; “I bet you that I could take you down.” Jon Jones told Daniel Cormier backstage at UFC 121 in 2010. Unsurprisingly, the former Olympic wrestler Cormier took offense to this, and their rivalry was born. While their squabbles wouldn’t hit the cage for another five years, their distaste for each other would be firmly established.
Initially, their beef was rather superficial as Cormier fought at Heavyweight, but in 2014 DC would come down to Light Heavyweight, putting together two wins over Patrick Cummins and Dan Henderson. Jones was coming off his Hall of Fame bout with Alexander Gustafsson and was initially supposed to rematch him, but Gustafsson would have to pull out with an injury, thus giving Cormier the title shot. In the build-up to this fight, their rivalry would reach mainstream awareness, starting with their famous scuffle at a UFC media day in August of that year.
The two faced off at a press event at the MGM Grand, and things went awry relatively fast. Jones got right in Cormier’s face, leading Cormier to respond with a hard shove. Jones stormed back at Cormier, leading to them getting tangled up and knocking over numerous people and the fake wall behind the stage. When the dust had finally settled, it was clear that the bad blood between these two had boiled over and would only continue to do so.
Jones and Cormier later did an interview on SportsCenter, in which they had to be kept in separate rooms. The two would exchange words when they believed cameras weren’t rolling and the seriousness of their beef was truly exposed. Jones would drop a now infamous line, “Hey pu--y, are you still there?” Things would only spiral out of control from here, with Cormier telling Jones, “I wish they would let me next door so I could spit in your f--king face.” Jones warmly responded, “...I would literally kill you if you spit in my face.”
Jones won the fight by unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, and 49-46).[138] He also became the first person to take Cormier down, scoring three takedowns in total. The win also earned Jones his fourth Fight of the Night bonus award. However, their rivalry wasn’t finished. At the end of the fifth round, the two got into an intense exchange, ending with Jones giving Cormier a crotch chop. After the victory, Jones would get on the mic and say, “ I don’t respect Daniel Cormier. I hope he’s somewhere crying right now. I’m sure he is.” Shockingly, it would then be revealed that Jones had tested positive for a cocaine metabolite before the fight. As this was not a banned substance out of competition, the fight was allowed to go on, but this would be the tip of the iceberg of Jones's questionable behavior.

    • I know Jones is the goat an all, but considering DC is literally the same height as Khabib, a lightweight, at a whopping 5'9 and was fight at LHW and HW. VS jones at 6'3. I honestly find Cormier more impressive. Dude just didnt give a f about weight classes, he fought anyone regardless of natural size.

      @Dippa666@Dippa666 Жыл бұрын
    • @@Dippa666 Its not all about height though. cormier is a natural heavyweight, that was used to fighting heavyweights. being shorter is also an advantage when it comes to defending takedowns, being more easily able to get lower to get underhooks etc. so theres advantages and disadvantages. what rly gave jon the advantage was his 84.5" reach, but as we've seen from other long fighters all of that is meaningless without the IQ to go along with it.

      @harshilameta@harshilametaАй бұрын
    • @@harshilameta Not 12, but 8. Where are you getting 12? Also DC was not a typical 35 year old in the UFC. He did not have the wear and tear since he hadn't been in the UFC as long or fighting since his 20s, which would have been way way worse because those guys have injuries and wear and tear. Randy Coutre was similar. He had his first fight and 34 and had no wear and tear and was freash physically, which is how he was champion at 45. DC was in his prime. Had you watched him dismantle Barnett and Henderson? He was a complete beast, which is why they set the fight up. Age is not a good excuse for using in DC's specific situation.

      @billj4525@billj4525Ай бұрын
    • That wouldn't be DC then. If he was a different height and different length you would have a fighter that doesn't exist. DC would have different skills and be worse in different aspects, so your statement is very wrong as well That's like saying if I was taller I would beat Lebron James or Michael Jordan in basketball. Height and length you can't complain about. No fighter would have ever make that excuse for losing, it makes no sense. They wouldn't fight if things like that bothered them.

  • I wish these two could fight one more time at heavy weight. I just want to hear them argue some more leading up to the fight. We all know Jon would win again. Still though, the greatest rivalry in UFC history. So good lol. They reminded me of brothers who had enough of each other.

    @Berkmugga@Berkmugga Жыл бұрын
    • Bro, there's no rivalry when one man is so much better than the other and is far more popular. Had DC won ANY of these fights, then maybe you could consider it a rivalry, but, my God, let's stop trying to act like DC belongs in the same stratosphere as JBJ, let alone OCTAGON!!!!

      @akbarshabazz-jenkins7847@akbarshabazz-jenkins7847 Жыл бұрын
    • @@akbarshabazz-jenkins7847 ordinarily you would be right but not in this case. DC was better than everyone else except Jon. They were both undefeated which made for the build up. Jon won both fights but lost the belt both times. So DC still became champion lol. Jon may have won in the octagon but DC had his victories as well. Jon lost his Nike and Gatorade sponsors after the fight they had at the state down at the MGM. Those sponsors were unheard of in MMA at the time. It’s the most bitter petty contentious and before both fights most competitive. No one knew Jon would win both fights. While Jon was getting arrested and having shameful court appearances DC was Mr. Happy commentating and on TV calling Jon “Son” telling him to get his shit together. Bringing up the steroids (even though they were both on them, everyone’s on steroids). The way Jon’s life went outside the cage and how well DC’s been doing, you would think Jon lost and DC won, but Jon DID beat him both times so it almost makes no sense. It’s almost as if DC put some kind of Voodoo on Jon. Until Jon won the HW belt. As long as Jon doesn’t get arrested anytime soon and beats Stipe (the guy who retired DC) then it’s over for DC. He has to shut up lol. The end. I love it. Wish we could see another fight just for this to continue.

    • We'll see. He never fights, and it's amazing how he comes back after years of no fights and wins the heavyweight belt, and even before that there was like over a year between his last few fights, just incredible. Eventually that might take a toll on him. He's not getting any younger either. He's just unbelievable, but it's tough. He needs to fight like soon. Even his last fight wasn't much practice. He just dominated. Jon is a freak though, best ever by so much.
