Saber is so sweet. He reminds me of an Akita we had in our family, Panda. She was 100lbs, so kind of big for a female, but she had no idea. She was mellow and quiet like Saber. We used to joke that she was like Eeyore. She was very shy. Panda barked about 6x in her 10 years of life and each time scared herself and had us wondering which neighbor got a new dog 😂 She definitely had the Akita intelligence and stubbornness. If she didn't want to do something, she'd sit and not move (common for Akitas). We used to crack up when she would bring a toy to you b/c she would bring it to your face as if you were supposed to use your mouth too 😅 When annoyed at someone or something, she would gently swat it w/ her huge paw. She was such a great dog. Akitas are fantastic but not for novice owners. I would say they should be the only dog unless they were raised together as puppies and w/ very balanced owner(s).
That made me laugh when you said she brought the toy to your face. Lol Sounds like a funny lovely girl. ❤
We call it setting anchor. Our 130 lb girl does the same thing. sits, gives you the ears. She happily tells anyone in her sight that they are on her turf. She loves other dogs, and always wants to play. Her play is overwhelming to some dogs we dog sit and they are terrified of her. Others love playing with her. It is amazing how she can adjust to the size of her playmate. She plays with tiny dogs very gently, she plays with big dogs like two heavyweights in an octagon.
Met an 11-year-old Akita yesterday. Gorgeous, dignified, and quiet. A well-bred, well-trained elder statesman.

My Akita just turned 11 last month and looks almost identical to Saber. It’s too bad his health is starting to deteriorate 😢 The wife and I are going to have to make some hard decisions in the near future…

Akitas are so cute they look gorgeous and cuddly like a teddy bear, I love them! 🥰 Their breed originates from Japan and was selectively bred in order to create the perfect bear hunting dog. That is why it is so important to train them and socialize with other dogs/animals early on, so that they are friendly and good with other animals and humans alike. Because if you don't, they can get very dangerous and uncontrollable, not all, but some could tun problematic without any proper care in their younger years. Their hunting instincts could kick in and turn against other dogs and animals, something all responsible owners would want to avoid.
😂 Helping himself to the fridge, making himself comfortable, soaking you asap... he's gonna be a fun friend indeed. I'm sorry to hear about Kuma. He was such a grumpy- faced darling.

I live for finding my friends' pets little quirks or 'sweet spots'. I've had so many people think I'm some kind of wizard or psychic just because I pay attention to body language & sounds. Whether it's scratching ears, rubbing butts, baby talking...I have no shame in doing my best to befriend animals of all kinds ❤

My first dog was a parvo survivor, too. His litter of 9 was thrown away in the garbage and the garbage man found them. Sadly my pups brothers and sisters all passed away. Thankfully he survived ($3000 later and several overnights at the vet) and had a long, happy life. Deepest condolences about Kuma.

I had 1 lab/aussie mix, that we could tell..."No, not yet, don't shake" and she would hold off until we could pull a shower curtain across...then we would tell her to "Shake, shake, shake." It worked with her, but, our other dogs, not even a little bit.
I love the way Vanessa always tells them "no! don't shake!" and they absolutely never cooperate.
I love how he moves his head as if to say "Here. No here. More here". Then in one spot "Yes! That's it!"

I had a bit of fear when it came to akitas after horrible bite and septic infection I received from an under socialized akita, Kuma helped me move passed that and reinforce for me that it really is up to the owner and not the breed. RIP sweet Kuma ❤
Ah, an American Akita with the Japanese Akita coloring. If his nose was bright pink and his snout a little longer, he'd look exactly like my Callie! We lost her a year ago this September. She was one of a kind. I whistle-trained her so instead of speaking a command like "sit" or "guard", I'd just whistle a certain way and she knew what she had to do. My family lost their minds when I showed them all the things she could do. Smartest dogs on Earth!

Right? There's a breeder near me who never has pups which are so light-colored. Japanese Akitas do have this colorway quite often. I think Sabre is from a more-recently imported bloodline than Kuma was.
Saber reminds me of Hachiko, the famous Japanese Akita who died waiting for his owner (who died tragically).

We had a Golden Retriever/Akita mix when our children were young. 125 pounds of perfection. He was Saber’s color, without an aggressive bone in his body. I still miss him.
Love him, he was so thoroughly enjoying the blow-dry and brushing process. What an absolute sweetie :)

We lost our Kuma, a Japanese akita, back in 2017. He was a big ol lovebug to those in his pack, and I miss him every day. Rest in peace to all our little bear cubs. 😭 Edit to add: When you have an akita who has trouble standing, it's best practice to lay them on their side to work on their paws/claws. That way not only are you letting the dog rest, you have more control if they start trying to fight you on it.

When I got a lab mix puppy (90's) I took her to that new pet store that let you take your pets inside. The next day, my psycho puppy did nothing but sit on the couch. Called the vet, got in right away. She had Parvo, perhaps from the pet store. Had to take her in to the vet for the next 4-5? days for an IV. She survived, but it was very scary few days. ❤Rest in peace Kuma❤
