  • I had some new Dunlop tyres a few years ago that were perfect one day and vibrated like a dumper truck on others. They balanced them about 6 times to no avail. Eventually Dunlop tracked down the problem to some rubber dust inside the tyres that had collected into little rubber marbles. So one day when you drove they got flung to the rim inside of the tyre evenly so no problem but on others they all clumped together in one place and vibrated like a goat with the dt's! Very frustrating then but I can smile about it now.

  • 7:00 I had a weird tyre balancing issue once that might be something your emailer could check. I had new tyres put on and suddenly the car would shake when driven. Yet when they tyres were taken off and re-checked on a balancing machine all was well. Put the wheels back on the car and the shaking started again. Turned out a loose tyre weight had fallen inside the tyre before it was fitted to my wheel. When they balanced the wheel that rogue weight would hold in one place due to centrifugal force, so the wheel got balanced correctly. But once on the actual road the uneven road surface caused that rogue weight to bounce around inside the tyre - causing the vibration.

  • 04:15 charging fault could also be a bad earthstrap between alternator/engine (if rubber mounted), engine/body, or body/battery. These straps and their bolted-up connections are neglected so often.

    @RupertReynolds1962@RupertReynolds1962 Жыл бұрын
  • Just a quick point about intermittent electrical faults: it's always worth checking the chassis earth connections first. These are easily overlooked and can misbehave despite looking perfectly sound. A typical 10-month-long British winter (😉) will even corrode a bowl of custard if given the chance, so strip the earthing points and reset them before spending a load of cash on new parts. Modern cars with sophisticated electronic 'brains' are especially sensitive to a dodgy electrical supply.

  • Back when steel belted radials were a thing, I had a car that as parked in a parking lot where water drained down. Over night the water froze and when I moved the car, it was temporarily stuck in the ice that had built up around the tires. Afterwards, driving down the road, the car would shake uncontrollably at 45 mph. I knew the tires weren't that old but it wasn't until I got home, parked the car and noticed that a whole section of the tire had shifted to the side of the tread. It had broken the steel belts when I reversed out of the ice in the parking lot! Needless to say I had to buy a new tire but what a sight to see that section of the tire shifted over!!

  • A small electric motorhome but with 4x4 drivetrain and some off-roading capabilities is definitely something on my bucket list. I kinda like an idea I came up with of basing it all around a small hookloader chassis so that the motorhome back can be dropped off. I'm on a farm so that way I could also have multiple 'modules' to go on the back (flat bed, motorhome, water bowser, people transporter, bulk tipper, mobile tool wagon/workshop, etc). The vehicle wouldn't then be parked up for 10-11 months of the year and could be used daily about the farm & our syndicate shoot when not being used as a camper / adventure wagon. ....I envision it working a bit like Thunderbird 2 😂

  • 5:15 I had a similar problem on a vehicle. In my case, when you accelerated hard, the engine rocked back enough that the aftermarket metal intake pipe would contact the positive terminal of the battery. I had thought there was sufficient room and insulation, but the engine moved enough and the insulation wore thru (but on the underside where I couldn't immediately see it). Solution was repositioning of the pipe and battery terminal so that they couldn't make contact.

    @LiqdPT@LiqdPT Жыл бұрын
    • I had something like this happening about 10 years ago and long story short some stuff I had in the trunk of my Miata caught fire in downtown Boston and the terminals of the battery melted away. Fortunately I was at the top of a hill so I roll-started it and drove immediately to an AutoZone store where they honored the warranty on the battery and replaced it for free!

  • One day my car was fine and the next it drove with a terrible shaking. I had parked the car and a heavy rainstorm had come along and the car was in 6-7 inches of water. Since the water wasn't getting any deeper than the height of the curb above the pavement, I left the car sit in the rushing water. The water deposited a handful of mud on the inside of the rim of the rear tire nearest the curb. It took a while to figure out what was happening and a simple clean out fixed the problem.

The panel vans you join together, notch out under the front to fit the coupling. Use two torsion beam rear axles from an old Golf for rear suspension & have extra batteries under the trailer with solar on the roof. Park the trailer and use the towing vehicle as a runaround...

Or maybe a ridged 4 or 6 or 8 wheel lorry, or even and articulated tractor and semi-trailer, or a military all terrain truck too? Though on the inside, it is actually a fully customised designed and built luxury Motorhome, but no one would know it from outside! As these Stealth Work / Commercial Vehicle conversions into motorhomes, are very popular in the USA and Canada, if not in Europe or the UK as much. So would make an ideal project, for you Edd, converting a large removevan, into a stealth electric or hybrid electric Motorhome! What do you think Edd, something worth a KZhead Video or two?

If they aren't properly lubrcated, they can be off-centre. (Vauxhall had an intractable problem with "engine" vibration on Bedford trucks. It was caused by cost accountants restricting the amount of soap that could be used in the water when mounting tyres.)

  • I once put asymmetrical tires, road tread on the outside, more aggressive tread on the inside on a ford conversion van. I had all kinds of vibration and the dealer finally replaced them with all season tires and that fixed the problem. The Lexus owner may want to try replacing the tires with another tread design.

  • Clicked like 5 times because I want to be sure. :) Also, very yes, crossover with DriveTribe and Edd's Workshop Diaries with the Orange has to happen. James May must be converted. Be sure to get Lucy Brown's opinion, she seems to dislike many foods.

  • A diesel vechicle is no more dirty than an electric, People need to realise what it takes to make the batteries for an electric motor And the exploitation of children digging for the cobalt for these batteries, Its a dirty buisness.

    • @@Nightwing874 petrol is best for fast cars and can get off the mark quicker, Diesel is best for long distance travelling and fuel consumption, diesels waste less fuel than Petrol. I think diesel is better

  • electric NOT the way to go it causes more pollution, electricity comes from Petrol/Gas/ oil and coal. My guess on the sadbaru would be a ground problem, battery or to body

  • Really interested to see an electric motorhome. I'm looking at the Ford E-Transit XLWB to convert. But at £45k + VAT would it make more sense (and be cheaper) to buy an old Mercedes Vario or 609D then convert that to electric? Something with 150 - 200 miles range on a charge would be good. Nobody in the UK seems to convert vans to electric. If you're up for it Edd, I'd much rather pay you to convert an old Vario :)
