I knew of sublimation lasers for a while now and I’ve been waiting SO FREAKING LONG to see someone use one on a car. You’re living MY DREAM!!!
Interesting to know how much it would cost to have that chassis stripped to bare metal using that laser.
How long did it take to go from "Cool! I've got a laser!" to "Dang, this is gonna take forever..."?
It did take longer than we first thought but actually it is such a mesmerising process it keeps you hooked!
@@eddchina I would have just sent it off to the blaster and paid the 300bucks. But why not when someone gives you free toys, you take em!
Dipped & galvanised would be so quick 😂
I dont think it takes too long. Sure, you might get it back faster if you take it to a blaster, but this is way cheaper, you can use it on a lot of different things as you go. Imagine you have taken apart a whole car, you'd wanna get it all in one go, would be a lot of stuff and take a long'ish time. Now Edd could send off some parts more suited for a blaster, and do the other stuff at home while waiting. I think it's brilliant tech that maybe isn't really ready to replace the blasters.
@@eddchina But it's sure not profitable, because the machine cost an arm, two legs and a few ribs, and no customer is willing to pay someone who operates it for hours and hours, so sandblasting is cheaper and faster, and dipping in acid and then galvanise it is also cheaper and faster, and also gets the inside done, so this laser machine is not something the car restoration busines is waiting for.
So glad I found this channel. Love your knowledge. Glad you’re doing this. Loved you on wheeler dealers. Your talent is second to non.
I’ve just started watching your new show and you explaining things to people that don’t understand absolutely marvellous I think the show will go a long long way thanks Edd and Paul I’m glad you stuck by him
I love the laser ablation process. Really fascinated by it. Thanks for the detailed explanation. Like others have said it's a key element in what makes your content great, and why you were so good in Wheeler Dealers too. Always a very good way of explaining things in a correct and polite manner Ed. Paul is the same with his approach too. Great pairing
laser cleaning always seemed cool and it seem great for smaller areas/projects. however when it comes to objects like this i would still go for acid dipping (you get the inside aswell) and way less time spent for your employees (which can be shown here almost no content because it takes forever) should just have sent it off while working on something else (more content, more money everyone happy)
@@Nickerian91 those machines cost a fortune, so rent one will be as expensive as dipping it in acid bath. And like you said, the inside does get cleaned aswell, and then i woud dip it in a zinc bath and never have to worry about rust again for at least half a century.
@@3DPeter acid dip doesn't sound as exciting on a video thumbnail though 😁
@@Nickerian91 your correct.....1 and done....
Love this series. It shows how any car can be saved no matter the challenges. We should all aspire to such a goal in our lives.
The text says, “Well Paul, speak for yourself. While we accept that sometimes good things come in small packages we think that on this occasion we agree with Ed that “full size” is always best!” Good little Easter egg👍
Paul gets his own back at 29 minutes🤣
C Gee, Why didn't I look down the comments before I tried pausing it on that...Doh!
Love Ed, inspired me to achieve great things with my VW air cooled. Even my wife impressed with Ed and helped her understand fixing cars is cool!
I'm so happy more Range Rover content is back! This made my week!
There will always be content with a Range Rover 😁😁😁
@@brianbickle7395 Workshop diaries 2045; we are just about to put the finishing touches to Jon's Range Rover.
@@nitt3rz weirdest was the American channel bought a brand new Lr, broke down at 300 miles, deemed irreparable!!
@@nitt3rz oy ope it lasts that long!
Would Love a Range Rover the same as I was given to drive around RAF Machrihanish in 1986. I was there for a NATO Exercise with the Navy. It was a blast.
So glad you guys are back! Especially on Fridays. Perfect start of the weekend. Keep the show as it is and was! Already was successful!
Super to have you in action again. Interesting to see the Carly in action on a Land Rover product, I've been looking for an affordable solution like this. Wow the laser cleaning is a revelation. Keep them coming - thanks as always !
Wow what an absolutely fantastic tool this Narran Laser precision is!! Clean & efficient if somewhat laborious, but the ultimate in applying an absolute meticulous approach to your project! Great work fellas!! 👏👏👏
Paul wasn’t fooled 😂 cleaver chap 😂🤣 you guys are great together 👍😎
Lovely to see Edd and Paul working together Hope Phil joins you guys soon.
I never get tired of watching Ed and his shows. Positive and extremely motivating to get out there and do things on your own !#Carly
Am glad I discovered and subscribed to Eds (not forgetting Paul) channel 👍 I love how the time is actually spent on the work and vehicle issues and not as much messing around with buying and selling which isn't why I watch 🤓🛠💪
Does anybody notice the frickin lasers well that's proper exciting!! And it's about time we had a new proper episode. If you'd left it any longer johns rusty old range rover chassis might have rusted away completely....thinking about it surely, no amount of lasers will be enough to remove all that rust comment at 0.23😂😂😂
Amazing what a bit of CGI can do, eh! 😉
Great to see you back! Fridays haven't been the same without a weekly dose of Edd Chinas Workshop Diaries. Carly looks a really useful bit of kit! #Carly
Ed is so much fun to listen to as he explains what he is up to!
Hey Edd. I love your videos. I am not a car fan, but I love techonlogy in generell. The most thing I love is your english. I am from germany. I can understand it, because it is very british without a local slang. It remids me of Friends I had in Enlgand. Former times. So, crack on...like you say. I love it!
I like how you are trying new things and getting better at production. For me though the part that keeps me coming back is that you focus more on educating and show and discussing things in detail such as exactly how that laser rust remover works. Thanks for the great videos.
Great to have you guys back in the feed Edd! That laser cleaning was very cool, and that #carly device is definatly worth looking into. Certainly more convenient than dragging the laptop out everytime I need to check something.
High monthly subsciptions but good if you use alot
Silly me, I've gone and watched this video without safety glasses. Will I be ok? 😎😎
I like to watch you repair vehicles, you always show in great detail with every car you tackle.
I only just found this series and I’ve been absolutely loving it!
Oh yeah. Edd is the absolute best
it's pretty awesome right ?
Brilliant to have these videos back again Edd and Paul keep up the superb work fellas
Hey Edd, I loved your explanation about lasers ! You make it look like it is super simple to understand. So sad you are not starring that tv show anymore.... so bad for us. Keep up with your outstanding content! You are the best :D
That laser cleaner is simply beautiful. In the 80s they dreamed of things like this and yet here we are literally using a laser to clean chassis rust. I want one.... and I don't even have a rusty chassis to clean!
Very cool piece of kit. 2 questions: 1) How are you going to get inside the box section, and 2) what are you going to coat it with afterwards (and will it start surface rusting again if you don't get something on it straightaway)?
Such a good question. I thought replacing the frame might have been a better solution. What would the price be for a replacement frame (new or old)?
I thought the guy who’s land rover it was, wanted to keep costs down after all it sat in a field for some time ignored. Given that land rovers are all over the place in crazy conditions why wasn’t the frame hot dipped because of all the potential areas where water gathers. Just my bitch:)
Just a heads up for the Golf GTI question. It's totally burning oil. I had 2 Subaru Impreza vehicles from that era and was doing a lot of research regarding the two types of vehicles. I opted for that Subaru (and love that car) but there has been recalls and even class action lawsuits for the issues with oil use on those vehicles. *Literally, if you had the information you'd get reimbursed the price of a quart for every oil change up to a certain amount, because the vehicle required more constant changes and some other quirks.*
Previously read somewhere the 2.0 TFSI's used to use oil by design to make more power, it depends of it's within what VW deem 'acceptable' useage :)
And the cpv valve system is well noted to add consumption.
Friend of mine had a 4wd Passat one of the first in the UK and that would have the low oil light come on between services and the dealers said it's perfectly normal for them to use oil.
Love your work Edd. Keep it up. Also that Carli diagnostic tool would be great for my son. He's a 3rd year apprentice mechanic and would be a real addition to his tools
Thank you Edd China for sharing this informative video. Yes, I have a few Classic Range Rovers and Classic Jagua' s that need a lot of work on. Thank you again. Greetings from Madang, Papua New Guinea!
To adjust the height of the chassis with the Frost rotation tool, you can use a power tool with a hex of 19 or 21 to center up (Bolt on the underside of the spindle, or center down (bolt on top of the spindle) 👍 #Carly
Yeah, worm gears are extremely amplifying of the work you put into them.
In all the years I've watched you, I don't think I've ever seen you so excited to use a new tool. Then again who wouldn't want to wear a space helmet and use a lazer blaster???? When do I get a turn????? :)
Pretty cool, no bits to change or anything, never gets dull.
12:36 "banana-ing"!! a cracking new word for my workshop!
The Carly# seems well advanced vs older models of similar tools. Great video and thanks for showing off the Cary and the laser
Glad to see you back in The Workshop!! Always enjoying the content been put out and learning of new tech and tips. Thanks for all your hard work on making these videos for us to enjoy. #carly
Always good seeing you and Paul working together ,,new tech too!
Bom dia, Edd China, fiquei feliz vc ter voltado, seus trabalhos são muitos bons, valeu Clóvis - Rio de Janeiro - Brasil . thank
One of the advantages of traditional blasting especially on vehicle frames is the etch that is left behind for the paint to adhere to. It would be interesting to see this thing used on a really scaly and greasy surface like most of use see in real life.
We priced up an industrial 2kw unit for use on engine parts, the manufacture came back with a price of €200,000. Guess they didn't want to deal with a English compamy😂
Yeeessss!!! Glad you’re both back. Love the episodes and the top tips, keep them coming! I would love to have a Carly to add to my DIY home garage, they look super useful and the coding feature could unlock loads! #carly Thanks Ed!!
Alternatively you could put the entire frame in a bath, fill it with evapo-rust and it would be rust free in the morning. A 55 gallon drum of evapo-rust is about 700$USD and is non-toxic so when you're done you just dump it down the drain, dry your chassis and repaint. The benefit of the bath being it will be rust free inside and out too over the laser.
it's nice to see that the Wheeler Dealer shows with Edd are still on Discovery chanel. and they are still the most popular ones. way to go mister China.
Missed ya Edd! Glad to have you back!
Really glad to see you back again. 30-40 minutes seems ideal for me and really makes a nice island of serenity in my Saturday :-) #carly
Anything that zaps rust gets my vote! All power to the laser........ #carly
Hi Edd , So glad I found you back on you tube . you were the only reason I watched wheeler dealers when you left I stopped watching the show .. Please promise me never to team up with somebody like that again! you`ll do better! Keep up the good work !
Love the change in music from when Edd was using the cleaner to when Paul used it. Mission Impossible to John Dankworth 😁😆
Great to have you back. 30 to 40 minutes every friday is the golden spot for me. #carly
Modern technology is absolutely mind blowing sometimes, who knew there was so much mucking around with a cars brain you can do with that #Carly device. Then that rust removing laser, WOW! When I think of all the wire brushes I've worn out over the years. Yes these kids today don't know how lucky they are or how tough it was in the "Old days!" Superb episode again Edd and team.
It’s so good to see you you’re using all the latest technology and one day you can Invent something yourself with all the technology you’re using
I was watching you since I was in school Edd. The you explain every tiny bits is amazing. Love to see you more ☺️🇮🇳
As an abrasive media blaster of 35 years, i would love to get my hands on a laser to see the difference for myself. It looks like a proper piece of kit. The Carly looks like a great piece of equipment and would look great in my workshop #Carly . Keep up the good work .
It looks a lot slower.
@@deth3021 yes it looks slower but everything has its place , Edd & Paul stripped the chassis in his workshop , imagine doing that with any blasting media , the mess . by the time you built a tent installed extraction blasted cleaned up, disposed of the media etc , you may as well have used the laser. It would be good to have a go though, laser beams are so cool .
@@deansanders527 at the price that thing costs, pretty sure only dedicated shops would use it. So when reading your comment im thinking of a shop choosing to use it over an abrasive or non abrasive media blaster.... I mean for detail/small work i could see it being a win. It just seems like a bad fit for an entire frame. But yhea look cool... in time lapse. Lol, feel like it would drive me crazy pretty quickly though, on a big job.
Your garage looks so cool with all the mood lights.. Also that rust removal lazar works great.. #Carly
Well done Ed👌 that laser tutorial was incredible. 👍
EDD am loving all what u both do keep up the fantastic content you and paul just rock
Great episode! Laser kit was like something from Back to the future, I imagine people walking past your unit are used to seeing some wacky stuff but that would have been a whole new level. #carly
Great explanation of how a laser works, Edd. And I love the geeky sci-fi noise it makes!
That Carly is a useful bit of kit. Pulsed laser cleaning looks like fun!
So nice to see you Edd on KZhead. Really missed you on the other show with Mike. Hope all is well and peace too. vf
With regards the episodes, I’m quite happy to have just one a week. Something to look forward and not overloading the viewership. As for length, more is always good but appreciate not everyone has the time or attention span, but certainly no less than 30mins please. I understand these things take a lot of time and resources, so maybe every last Friday of the month, you do something different, perhaps “simpler”, eg extended q&a, maybe segments featuring Paul or Neil by themselves, little bits on the cool tools in the workshop or how to’s (not all of us are confident with even the simple jobs!) or even Baking with Edd… :D Now I shall add #carly to this post too in the hope I win and then can discover what the yellow light on my dashboard really means….
Yeah alot of tubers get caught up in the daily vidz and I just end up skipping a bunch of them.
I love the idea however… media blasting or dipping would have been a hell of alot quicker!
I would have welded the rust holes and shipped it off for media blast and hot dip galvanising or maybe zinc metal spray. The latter leaves a rough surface ideal for epoxy primer and overcoat. It's used by the Brixham fishing boats so must be pretty tough.
Yes I agree - it out weighs the amount of £ investment required to set up this laser system, you could probably get quite a few chassis media blasted & powder coated 😉
But where's the fun in that? :-) Nice to see modern tech on display!!
Wonder if it would be cheaper to rent/run the laser machine for as long as it takes, or just buy a new galv chassis.
@@davidelliott5843 thank god it's Edd China making the videos then and not David Elliott
Good to see you back Edd that new work shop looks cracking well done
The best mechanic on the planet is back
Loved the episode, good to see you and your team is back in 2022. Hope the temperature is doable in the workshop. #Carly
Edd, you've used a lot of cool tools over the years but the rust eating laser is the best !
I bet he could of removed that rust much quicker with a angle grinder with flap disk.
@@suzesiviter6083 Agreed, but this is a laser, lol.
cant beat the sandblaster, no rot left, and a perfect key for the paint.
Claro que faria o mesmo, e com muito mais objetos, sei que no backstage deve ter feito tambem!! Vlw Ed, seu programa e demais!
Great to relax with a beer and watch you guys work. Like the look of the #carley
Glad you guys are back! 👍 I wonder how much the restauration would cost in the end if John had to pay for all those man hours and stuff.. 🤔
Quite a sobering thought - I guess we will probably be able to buy him a brand new gold plated Range Rover for the same money but where is the fun in that?!
@@eddchina you nailed it!! 👍
Hey ed im glad u have a show again i like the way u explain things still miss u in wheeler dealer but I’m glad
Espero que lleguéis pronto al millón de subscriptores!!! Vamos!!!! Y gracias por subtitular en español Edd! Saludos desde Cataluña!
Welcome back Edd and Paul, been waiting patiently for your next episode. Mostly watch them the day they come out and they never disappoint! #Carly
It's good to have you back! Watching you always motivates me to work on my own vehicles. And thanks for the Austin Powers reference with the "laser" I have an OBD dongle, but the Carly looks much more user-friendly. So I'm going to #Carly and cross my fingers.
I use to run a Bystronic 6kw RF Co2 laser in the engineering industry for 15 yrs. would cut up to 30 mm mild steel, 25mm stst and 15mm Aluminum. funny thing is put a paper lable, wax pen or rust on the surface, would it cut it, would it hell as like, mild steel had to be clean as a whistle and a light oiling helped. If you've got mud, dust and crap on the metal it will slow things down quite a bit.
Gotta love the clean removal of rust, that has to be better than a wire brush. And the #carly device looks good I’d love to have one of those in my tool box. Can’t wait to see more of this build.
Well, that was almost a 30 minutes long advertisement (not counting the AskEDD), the sponsors must love this show...
It’s so good to see you doing something your good at Edd. Your videos actually teach aswell as entertain. #carly
Hi! Fun too see Paul and hear him too! In WD he was a silent worker helping you out, i belive Mike didn't want him to steel his lines.... :D I do like to see you two work toghether and i knew he was a nice guy and even a good mechanic!
That laser didn't just pierce the rust. It pierced my ears as well! 🤣
Great episode! Been following you since your WD days. I need a #Carly in my life so I can diagnose my cars issues myself. As a weekend mechanic, this is what I need to save money on my maintenance by doing it myself!
I do the same but you can do it cheaper them Carly, I'm using a simple Bluetooth OBD2 with Torque Pro. Just don't think Carly is worth as it's a subscription
Read the TrustPilot reviews FIRST: You can't do the things shown in the vid unless you pay a rolling annual subscription - and you won't get a refund if the thing breaks or is generally U/S - Carly have been offering a 15% discount in return for 5* reviews but then not honouring their offer....so research this for yourself - don't take my word for it.
Great video as usual Edd, Keep up the awesome video's, from Jay in Australia 💯👌 #Carly
The results that the laser delivers are very satisfying.
"Do you expect me to talk?" "No Mr China, I expect you to clean!"
22:40 check the coolant, on some cars oil can leak into the cooling system.
Yes it can get in by an internal leak in the oil cooler which also carries coolant
So good to have you guys back! And teasing! I can’t wait to see this done! Even excited to see the chassis mocked up before the body is returned! I’m currently recovering at home after breaking my back in a fall, and it’s a godsend to have something to watch! And all hail #carly 🙏🏼🙌🏼
I am so impressed with the Carly device that I tend to have all next Christmas
I’ve messed about with cheap, naff obd2 readers but the #carly looks much more solid. Will definitely give it a look. As an aside, this channel is a masterclass in how to do sponsorship. Absolutely on topic and no silly distractions. Good work.
Hi Edd, I'm from Russia, I really like watching you fix cars, I remember I started watching you when you were filming the show Wheeler Dealers, I'm so glad I found you on KZhead! Personally, I don’t have my own car yet, but I like to dig into different mechanisms, in this case I’m not bad at repairing power tools, and I’m a little fond of repairs of small electronics. I subscribed to your channel 🙂
Great to have you back edd you and Paul make a great team #carly
That laser is brilliant, and very satisfying to watch, top job mates!

Great video👍Paul seemed to have expert technique with the hand filing. #carly
lot's of practice!!
Super happy for the new episode can't wait to see more #Carly
Knowing a bit about Laser Cleaning myself, what’s rarely disclosed is the top tier machines from the best 3-4 reputable manufacturers (which includes Narran) start around $50-$80K for a small / Low W backpack model, to $150-$300K for a 1-4KW air / water cooled, semi-portable cabinet models. In the US, few / no companies lease the machines, so they’re a bit out of reach for small / med. shops and are usually +120 day “build to order” lead times. In my region (S.E. US) there are a few service providers that will do mobile cleaning for you at around $100-$150 per hour (depending on conditions), available power supply, height of specific work area, etc. plus travel costs,… Typically, the smaller the machine, the slower the cleaning efficiency (area per minute / hour) and beware of the “cheap” machines. Like with most advanced technology, you usually get what you pay for. IMO, rust cleaning on a heavy gauge chassis isn’t the “comfort zone” of the LC’s capabilities, when dustless blasting / various media blasting is faster / more efficient and less expensive. They also aren’t yet very effective on thick coatings. The LC’s certainly shine in their own niche, I.e. surface cleaning jobs under strict environmental constraints (from airborne contaminants), large / stationary target components, temperature sensitive / lightweight materials prone to warping, light / moderate surface contamination and finishes on highly contoured components like auto parts (various oils, carbon deposits, etc.) and high production specialized surface prep for manufacturing, etc. just to name a few. Not trying to discourage anyone that’s interested, because the technology is super cool, just a reality check that there aren’t Laser Cleaning Suppliers that I’ve found with shelves full of units ready to ship out and at low cost. JS
It's kind of funny I was just talking about you to a friend here in the states today and lo and behold I stumbled across your channel. Looking forward to the upcoming videos! keep up the great work as I'm sure you have been putting out some awesome content. You just got another Subscriber From Washington State USA!
31:13 minutes of fluff and then the laser begins.
