Interesting take: 1.21 is a "setup" update. They're implementing features that can clearly be used in other places as part of possibly larger updates. Edit: there is a war in the replies join up
Along with stuff trialed in april fools, like, that april fools added a lot more than any other. Others just mostly mixed stuff around, this one had a lot of functional new stuff

Just like how buzzy bees was It added 3 blocks. 2 items. And 1 mob And next was one of the largest ever. The nether update We might get the end update. AND IT'S 2000% NOT THE BETTER END MOD. IT'S THE GODDAMN END OF THE WORLD

ESPECIALLY the datapack features they're giving to Java players. They're at least 3 updates away until datapack makers can go toe to toe with mod makers when it comes to easily adding game contents like custom items, foods, effects etc...
On the minecraft website they had the final “Around the block” ( a series where they go over biomes) about the void, and the last line was literally “ The void is where Around the Block ends, but maybe where a new adventure begins?” And no one seems to be talking about it, even though it’s basically confirmation in my eyes of an end update
See, while this would seem true, remember the amount of times Minecraft has hinted at something only not to add? Honestly I can't think of anything off the top of my head than the fireflies and forests. Maybe I'm misremembering, but I think they have done this to other things.
Nah, the series is about different biomes, he just ran out of biomes to do. That's why he words it like that. Cause it's literally the last Around the Block post. He's probably just teasing another series if anything. Also. He is just a writer. He might not even have special intel, especially when writing blogs about things that everyone already knows is all he does. Also, Mojang doesn't really do teasers like that, I think you're reading too much into it
@@alexjustalexyt1144 That is a fair point, however mojang have really gotten into teasers with especially the mace being teased a couple days before release. Also, 1.21 has been anything but standard so we really don’t know what mojang will do. I was under the impression the writers worked closely with devs, idk why, but now that you say that, that would also make sense edit: I smol brain and made a spelling error
@@Abadraco I don’t really think those are in the same boat, the fireflies and birch forests were shown off at minecraft live, but got delayed, which i feel is different than getting teased and not added. Plus, would they really go through all that effort to just not do anything about it?
Yup. added so many end update tips, it's guaranteed. For example, a while ago they did a video on just the ender dragon.
If we have to wait 2 months for 1.21 with no new major additions, fine, but I hope they are using this time well to start developing for next year's update. (and finalizing 1.21's bugfixes)

Well, it looks like it’s coming in May because it officially has left experimental meaning it is complete
summer release is definitely because the vast majority of minecraft players are kids in school in the northern hemsiphere, so capitalizing off summer break is just the logical thing to do for game developers. this is also probably why winter releases take place in december, its for christmas break.
Plus a lot of kids will be on summer holidays and parents will be trying to keep them occupied

it was 6 months after village and pillage, and also set the infrastructure for modern minecraft to not run like crap (which it did after 1.13). That is why 1.16 was around the time 1.12 technical servers started converting, because performance had gotten so much better,

All the bee update did was add: 1 new mob 4 new blocks 2 new items That’s not exactly a major update.
Can't release games in January because the team is decimated by vacations in December. Nothing happens in December, progress is crippled.
Post-Christmas season debt/wallet shock is an actual thing. All sales tend to be trash until after tax [refunds] start. Early summer (the end of a school year) is the beginning of one of the longest "available funds" period of the year, and only ends when people realize the the next holiday season is coming, and they should probably start saving for it. This is also why big-budget summer blockbuster films became a thing. There is both time AND money available to spend.
I always felt like the update happened right as school was ending. So I would play Minecraft ALL SUMMER LONG

The fact that we don’t have a name for the update yet is the only troublesome sign at this point. Tales and Trails was announced at the March Minecraft Monthly, so we are a month and a half behind that timeline at this point. Everything else points to a June release, but I still wonder why Mojang hasn’t announced the name yet.
I am just confused as to how this update revolves around tinkering. We have the combat stuff with the new structure and the new mobs to fight. But I don't really see a firm connection as to how all these things Minecraft has updated has anything to do with tinkering, besides the new automated crafter. It seems like just a jumbled mess right now of features.

@@lupus_aeterna7793 The update started off with some really cool "tinkering" features with the Copper Bulb and the Crafter, but I agree with you that the "Combat Adventures" features greatly outweigh the "Tinkering" features.
I would argue 1.15 was incredibly single-feature-focused
Mojang has been pretty consistent with putting out Minecraft Monthly videos, so perhaps the next one will reveal the name of 1.21. Currently banking on it being Trials & Vials.

For digital releases Tuesday is convenient as it makes it easier to release an emergency hotfix if necessary. Mondays are out as no one wants to be doing anything major on Monday. Monday before a release tuesday can be used for last minute testing, fixes and prep. In the IT world Scheduled updates or releases are never done on Fridays because it would mean working on the weekend if something is wrong. As such there is almost zero chance it will come out on friday the 7th. Tuesday gives at least 3 days to make an emergency hotfix if needed

Tuesday releases makes lots of sense for some games because when they release an update they have a few days after to fix bugs before the weekend when they won’t be at work

I used to work in the physical media department at Best Buy and Tuesdays were release date for video games, movies and CDs! Fridays became a second day for music. Not sure if it's still the same as it was back in 2016, but I thought I'd mention it. I wasn't involved in the reasoning/decisions for that, but it seemed like a "this is how it's always been done" thing. Late shipments were definitely an issue more for the Friday music releases (along with making space on shelved on a big shopping day), so your thinking is probably correct in how it came to be!

This June Release Date trend is the major problem with recent Updates, not over ambition, not promising too much, not unrealistic expectation. It’s this obsession that they have to always release an update in June. Many Updates have been ruined by this because they were unintentionally splinted (caves and Cliffs) or rushed and features cut from them (Wild Update) or just being unambitious (Trails and Tales, 1.21). Seriously they are so obsessed over this release month that updates quality has to be sacrificed to meet their stupid deadlines which no one cares about, I am more than happy to wait a few more months until later this year, if it means 1.21 can go from a decent update to a great update but no got to get it out for JUNE! (Again, in fact I am going to predict 1.22 release will be June 2025, and 1.23 will be June 2026 and get this on June 2027 we will get 1.24)
i’m srsly starting to get tired of this release schedule.. maybe it’s just me but id rather have 2 smaller updates a year than one big one, i get so bored between updates tho i understand it takes a while

If you know anything about businesses and tax, Q1 is usually a bit of a dead quanter after Q4s sales, where as Q2 are when big investments are usually made and tax is written off from the previous tax year etc, so releasing in June, just before Q3 makes a lot of sense from an invester point of view. Wouldn't be surprised if they break it up into 2 parts again like caves and cliffs, as trials doesn't seem that impactful personally, it makes sense for business releasing in Q2 and then again in Q3 or Q4 for marketing, not to mention the extra time to polish the game and release something bigger like combat in part 2 to keep people engaged.

I think it'll come sooner then June 7th because they're done with all the major features and it's only April 14 and they've already started pre releases. So I think probably sometime in May at the latest.
they've started pre-releases for 1.20.5 with armadillos, not 1.21

I find it interesting that your discussion of how people are more likely to get games in the summer (about 5:00-6:00) applies in the southern hemisphere. (By summer I mean the season, not June). I much prefer buying new things in December - February, mostly because of Christmas but also because buying new things in the middle of the year is just odd to me. I’ll happily spend $150 on the newest ps5 game, but not until November even though it released in July (for example). And plus the price goes down.

Listen to the Spawn Chunks Podcast episode with sultan on as a guest where he talks about the design choices for the mace. Outside of bug fixes beyond this point are unlikely.
Fun Fact: right now Minecraft Preview allows you to have a render distance of 36 chunks, which is a 8 chunk increase compared to the original 28 chuncks.

Its prob because kids/teens and uni/college people are on summer break so releasing the game during the summer months is a smart move because those people will have a lot more free time to play the game

It’s always been on my birthday, it’d be alright if they broke the trend.
I mean, monday they prepare, and Wednesday and Thursday they can fix any major bugs. People are more likely to be busy on Fridays and weekends. Summers people have more energy because there is more sun. It is actually a sciencetific thing and it's really weird. There's this thing called seasonal affective disorder(or SAD, which bravo for whoever came up with that). It's only aproximity 3% of people, but everyone has a little less energy. Basically lack of sun vitamins make people depressed. And while there are people who play Minecraft that live in the Southern hemisphere, majority of Minecraft players live in the Northern hemisphere. Also, their main demographic is kids.
Imagine the shock if it releases in May....
