We pit the Nissan Armada against the Toyota Sequoia in this comparison video. The Sequoia might be all new while the Nissan is riding on an old platform, but the savings offered by Nissan make the Armada a strong proposition.

  • My dad bought bought my mom a brand new 2007 Armada in 2007. She kept that car until 2020 and put just over 400,000 kilometres on it. Literally did not have one issue during that time. Oil changes, new brakes, new tires and a new battery were the only items we ever did to it. Absolutely bulletproof vehicle.

    • I totally agree with you dq1860. I had the 2004 Infiniti QX56 which was a luxury Armada built at the same plant in Canton, Mississippi. Other than burning some oil, I agree that this vehicle was bulletproof. But, after about 17 years and 222,000 miles on it, it had a lot of rust underneath due to the heavy salt roads in NJ and pulling my boat out of salt water too. So, when it was time finally for a new SUV, the decision was easy. I purchased the 2021 Nissan Armada SL and I just love this vehicle. The main reason I went with the Armada was that it was built in Japan, same Endurance V8 engine and dependable 7 speed automatic transmission (no CVT thankfully) and after 31,000 miles currently, I know I made the right decision. For cost value, solid build quality and dependability, you can't beat the Armada.

Real truck people know the thing is built 10x better than the American Sequoia and used around the world to kick ass off road in jungles and deserts. You want the durability of a Landcruiser at a price that isn't overinflated, get you an Armada. • Good comparison. I prefer the Nissan for classy looks vs kinda gimicky looks of the Toyota.. i think most of Armadas are manufactured in Japan as was my 4runner, i trust Japanese build quality a tad more, plus all quality issues of a new launch car, i see many armadas and qx80s (same car) with well over 200k miles for sale and still running well. As I'm fairly tall the second row Sequoia head room would be a deal breaker.. and the price difference is huge. Some Nissan dealers are offering discounts to boot, 10k off even.. and Toyota is not, so they could be $20k+ overall savings diff. I'd also say the off road capabilities based on the patrol history and what those crazy australiana do would be far better in the Armada. Australia has some sweet platform/safari roof racks you can get for this.. Disclaimer, i just bought an Armada, so I'm biased. lol. 45 for a new SV. Craaazy good deal. If you notice though, I think it’s better to NOT have that option, because the Armada 3rd row lays flat, therefore, giving IT more room, PLUS, much easier to situate, and store stuff securely, as opposed to seats that are above and do not lay flat, but they do move back-and-forth 5 inches? To me ,THAT seems more of a fault, & what good does that do? & as a drummer & an artist, I’m CONSTANTLY using the the back w/ the 2nd & 3rd rows down to transport gear or paintings, & the last thing I’d wanna deal w/ is different wonky levels. The flatter the better, for me.. That’s just my opinion. Awesome job on the video though. It was very informative. Those are actually the two SUVS that I was interested in, and seeing now that the Sequoia does not go flat, may be a dealbreaker, IS a dealbreaker. Bummer, I was leaning towards it..

I got a good deal on a used Armada Platinum, with some mileage on it, but still enough that it's going to last me a while before my next trade-in. My only real issue with it is the 5-speed's mapping, it causes it to burn more fuel because its revving higher than I'd like on the highway.

  • Old equal reliability. Let see how long those new hot turbos last. I know, my previous suv was a turbo 4. Now I have a 2021 Armada Platinum. That V8 will last a lot longer than those hot turbo engines.

  • The sequoia is badass but averaging 10-20k more depending on trim and location, the Nissan is cheaper and will do the same job for most people that need a full size SUV. The Nissan due to lack of demand you could probably get for much less compared to the dealers holding sequoia’s hostage

    • The only thing the armada does well is act like the dinosaur it is. Why even buy a 24 armada when it's basically the same as a 2014. Nissan canceled the titan because of sales. That 5.6 is a complete gas guzzler joke. Gas isn't $1.00 a gallon so buying a new armada is pointless. The Sequoia is all new, gets reasonable fuel economy.

    • @@thatdudeinblackshoesthe 4wd titan could still get 15mpg. Better than the Tundra. Miss the Titan, was a good truck, and nissan couldve struck a real niche market if they made a stickshift street truck version.

    • I rented an Armada and later a twin turbo Tundra for two different road trips to the rockies. The Armada with V8 engine got better calculated MPG . All family members preferred the Armada SL trim seats. Armada + QX80 platform have historically outsold the Land Cruiser + LX + Sequoia 3 to 2. Overall I prefer the Armada despite low resale value because I keep my cars for minimum 12 years but to each its own.

  • Toyota really needs to make a "Grand Tundra" or long wheelbase version. It makes no sense to make a "giant" SUV with so little useable cargo space. They stretched the Highlander to general acclaim and honestly should only off the third row on an extended wheelbase version. I find it incomprehensible that Toyota dumped that incredible v8 while everyone else seems to be able to keep all kinds of V8s. At this price point ( $100k + with tax) i think there are better options to have a comfortable, reliable mega-suv. If you're ok with paying these prices, you are fine with buying lots of gas, and you can also probably afford some serious custom upgrades to a previous generation Sequoia, rather than deal with a turbo v6. What have they actually improved? The radio, screens, and the max trim interior? With $100k to throw at the problem, you could go find a last gen Land Cruiser 200, or LX600 in the south western Sates, and even throw in the trip as a winter vacation in the cost. At these prices, why settle for anything less than exactly what you want?

I have had a mini van(now the Nissan quest, which I love!), for the past 10 years or so. That being said, we have an RV that we pull with our titan and I’m wanting an Armada to pull it longer distances. I was very surprised when I got behind the wheel of the Armada and it didn’t have that big car feel. I love it! The Toyota drove nice too, but I can’t get past the difference in the big car feel.

  • I bought a new 2023 Nissan Armada platinum in October 2023, the dealership couldn’t give them away. My armada is the same color as the one you are reviewing, but black interior with rear seat monitors. I previously owned a 2015 Infiniti QX80 (sensory trim today), and the QX80 superior build and tech was immediately known, and my Armada isn’t close to the Infiniti. I paid $58,000 us $ and at that price, it was definitely worth the whole shortcomings that everyone says. The armada isn’t great for front seat drivers for legroom. As far as the design, the armada is tried and true, and being “old” is awesome.

I've been doing my research and hear nothing but negative reviews about the new Sequoia, too loud, too expensive, etc.. and I'm so close to pulling the trigger on a used Armada. I can't believe Toyota's are so over priced, looks like I may be jumping over to the Nissan world. Thanks for the review, keep up the great work.

  • The old Sequoia did not have leaf springs in the rear. This new Sequoia will be lucky to last 2 more years before it gets cancelled. The new Prado, GX550, and the new Patrol/Armada are going to kill it. Toyota completely cheaped out by making this just like a Tundra and that 3rd row / cargo arrangement and lack of fulltime 4WD (that the 2nd gen had) is inexcusable. BTW, the Nissan Patrol / Armada sold everywhere else certainly does have a locking rear diff plus the locking centre diff (which this Armada also has). I've been a lifelong Toyota Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol fan, and owned a 2nd gen Sequoia (2012) for 10 years from new. I now have a 4Runner TRD Off-Road and a 2023 Nissan Armada, and was really excited about the new Sequoia TRD, until I drove it and compared it to my previous Sequoia with the 5.7L V8. The new Sequoia is not even in the same class as the Armada and last Sequoia. I'll never buy the new Sequoia. Looking forward to the new 2025 Patrol / Armada. If Nissan brings the full-spec version to North America, it's a no brainer over the new Toyota Sequoia. You'll get a quality made-in-Japan global icon.

  • There is no excuse for what Toyota did with the Sequoia as far as practicality is concerned especially since it shares the same platform as the Tundra. It's only sold in NA along with the GM full sizers and the Expedition so they knew to benchmark those. Even as a hybrid, they had at least 15 years to package it better to accommodate a proper third row and adequate cargo space. But I guess that's why they have the cheaper and cheap looking Grand Highlander.
