  • You can really see the impact in the paint by Chet. Just like the Texas game, there was a lot of hesitation by UCLA about going in the paint which resulted stalled drives and kick outs.

  • Since it is the giving time of the year, I think Zion ought to donate some of his daily calorie intake to Holgrem. Zion slims down a little, Chet bulks up a little. It would be a win-win for both players.

    • As a program, Gonzaga isn't Duke, North Carolina or Villanova. I went to college at Spokane Falls Community College and the Bulldogs with Mark Few didn't start off undefeated. It was the start of who they became. I knew some players that played on that team. They were good but not a powerhouse with NCAA championships. As a program, the only memory people will have is of champions, and Gonzaga hasn't won one yeaht, San Francisco has one NCAA Championship, and no one remembers Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble when they played at Loyola Marymount. Everyone remembered the UNLV Running Rebels that year because they won the championship. Gonzaga University is not like Duke ,North Carolina, or Villanova. They are not even like UNLV or the University of San Francisco.

Given the choke job by Gonzaga in last year's championship, it's clear that most basketball fans (mainly the fans of blue bloods) aren't ever going to give Few or the Bulldogs credit for anything they do in basketball until they finally win it all.

  • As zags fan of over 25 years i noticed once the zags were up 20 with 8 minutes to go in 1st half Ucla had already conceded giving themselves a reasonable chance off coming back. Ucla chose to slow the game down and then limit transition so zags were content playing slower game. Zags can play any pace you want and still be effective. You notice they were content letting UCLA dribble down low and take contested 2's while guardinging the 3pt line all night and especially juzang. Flash a double team in screen roll everytime with juzang to limit his 3pt shooting. He is basically and iso player so the nba suits him fine. UCLA had the right gameplan but didn't have the depth and rim protection to win once down that many points. Sounds like a team like Purdue would be their greatest threat. Zags have the athleticism to guard the 3 line against anybody. sallis has 6 10' wingspan and all the other guards are decent size. Watson can guard 4 positions on the floor and then you have chet. Even 6 8" kaden perry the freshmen has great hops and can defensive rebound in limited minutes. Final note: good luck trying to trap the zags in the final 6-7 minutes of a game to force turnovers. It won't work this year. If anything they praying someone does that so they then can speed play up again. You can always try strtegically fouling them and see if they miss multiple free throws?

Gonzaga was incredible last year but Baylor was just better and older too. It ain’t GUs fault that media overhyped them coming up to that game but it doesn’t mean that team wasn’t great either just because they lost to not only the best all around team in college basketball but they lost to a team that was playing as good as they possibly could while the Zags were coming off a day of rest from an intense overtime game.

There are a lot of great teams that are a defensive mess right now -UCLA being one of them. Look at what happened to Oregon in the past couple weeks. But we know Oregon is a talented team with a good coach who will have them looking a lot different by the time the tourney comes. Sorry to say Chet has the potential to out do them all. Those three Great players you mentioned could NOT handle the ball like Holmgren. Holmgren at 18 yrs old has Incredible court sense, very HIGH basketball IQ, is a Great passer and could set records for shots blocked this year and every year in the NBA...ALSO Holmgren can shoot threes like a shooting guard . NONE of the guys you mentioned were effective more than 12 feet from the rim !. If Holmgren stays healthy he will be a Monster in the NBA.

Zag Up....Go Zags.

    • Gonzaga has a heavy front-loaded schedule every year. They schedule tough out of conference games on the road or on neutral courts to compensate for their conference being relatively easy. The argument that they "dont play anyone" has never been true. They just play all their difficult games early, which I actually thinks hurts them come tourney time because they forget how to grind out wins against tough opponents after coasting to blowout wins the last month and a half of the season.

  • Reading the comments reinforces that most casual fans don't watch and understand the game of basketball. UCLA was missing their starting center Cody Riley. They were forced to play his backup extended mins and also had to play their 4th string big against argubably the best frontline in the naton. That isn't gonna cut it. UCLA played poorly, the refs were horrible and it just wasn't their night. No excuses but all of this talk of UCLA being overrated is beyond ridiclous. They beat a top 5 team in Vilanova earlier this season. Gonzaga was trapping UCLA's high pick and roll all night long because the UCLA bigs were no offensive threat. You can't do that with Riley on the floor. Missing him threw off the spacing and the Bruins player began to press and play hurried offensively. UCLA will be fine. They should be a 1 or 2 seed in the tourney and will challenge for a PAC 12 title. I really want a rematch in the tourney with a healthy UCLA sqaud.

    • Excellent analysis. Note also that after falling behind 30-10 early, UCLA adjusted and played Gonzaga essentially even for the remainder of the game. They just couldn't make up the initial 20-point deficit.

      @alanfoster6589@alanfoster65892 жыл бұрын
    • the officiating favored UCLA for sure. The first seven fouls called in the 2nd half were against the zags. The officials did everything to give UCLA a chance. UCLA conceded by having jacquez take it inside everytime. You can't beat gonzaga unless you shoot a high volume of 3's and make alot. The zags have alot more athleticism and length than any team they have put on the floor so guarding the 3 was easy. UCLA attempted only 12 and made 2 or 3 of them. Also you can't trap this team and expect to force enough turnovers to come back. That would speed play up and that is exactly what the zags. Kudos to UCLA for slowing game down to at least them play them about even in 2nd half and avoid being beat by over 30. Texas tried the same thing but, couldn't force turnovers with nembard on floor 40 minutes. BTW, he played 40 in this game.

Gonxaga has won the most tournament games of any school in the last decade, they’re getting deep into the tournament consistently and they’re landing top recruits and getting players to the NBA. • Good idea, force them to join a Power 5 even though they don't have a football team!!! Maybe the Big East even, who cares if they're on the west coast. Maybe the Mt. West, because, you know, UNLV and Nevada! It's horrible seeing competition for P5 teams outside of their conference because that never made anyone better. How about the P5 conferences step up like the WCC is? Make those coaches and athletic directors do their jobs instead of relying on illegal Adidas scholarships and bribes. Yeah, it's GU's conference that's the problem, practice, hard working defensive, high output offense, and hard working recruiters is the problem. Built from nothing, a team that almost dropped out of D1 athletics. This conference argument is a joke and contradicts with your reasoning as to why they don't win title. Keep your excuses, nothing is ever good enough for the spoiled, entitled P5 fanboys.
