    • It is not that rare. About every five to ten years. This was across several states, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Arkansas, Missouri, and Iowa, in the last 3 days. Oklahoma alone had 149 reported tornadoes in 2019. The majority of tornadoes occur in May, with 1,776 occurring in May since 1950. In 2019, 105 of the 149 Oklahoma tornadoes occurred in May, and that does not include the number of tornadoes in the other Plains States. It is also important, when looking at the records since 1950, to understand that the developments in radar technology and tracking have increased significantly since then, so that it is much easier now to count tornadoes that would have gone unreported in the 1950's, 60's, and 70's. I grew up in Oklahoma, and when I was a kid spotting a tornado relied on eyesight and damage for the most part. While they had radar for weather patterns, the ability to identify tornadoes on radar didn't happen until Doppler radar in Oklahoma. Before that tornadoes would have been under reported depending on if they were seen and if they caused damage. Most night time tornadoes would only be reported if there was damage, for instance. Modern weather radar helps a lot in aiding our weathermen to locate, track, and warn communities, but sometimes there isn't much warning if one suddenly drops down. I watched one float over my house once, but it didn't drop down until it was about two miles past. Even with radar they look for a hook echo, wind speeds, and debris picked up by the radar. Without the debris to let them know it is on the ground, or the observation of storm chasers, radar can't tell if a tornado is on the ground.

  • Years ago e visited family back east during tornado season. I was shocked at how people who live there have become complacent about the emergency warning system. We live in WA state where there really aren't any real dangers from storms. So I guess we are more sensitive to the dangers as opposed to be desensitized from the warnings go off and then there not being any funnels touching down. I remember being awake watching tv the first night and the warnings going across the tv screen. I asked my family members if we should go into the basement. This was when all the children were in there beds sleeping. The person's who were desensitized thought it better to just go back to bed. It would be fine etc. I couldn't sleep though and stayed awake worrying. This is a good example of how we become too comfortable. I was born in Florida and remember tornadoes and hurricanes as a child. I'm still sensitive to the dangers, I remember that fear as a child. Prayers for those back east. Stay sensitive to the world around you. Don't allow yourself to be too comfortable. Stay safe.❤

    • @PauloHernandezXD in 1980 a tornado struck my friends house 5 miles away. The house was actually his grandparents. His grandma refused to move back unless they built underground. They did, in Florida. It's in St. Cloud, FL. I believe it was sold some years later but, the roof is still mowed to this day. It also keeps a fairly consistent temperature year round. That would be beneficial for Oklahoma. I believe the indigenous people somewhat did this with grass mounds. It is time to mitigate some of the environmental challenges that likely will continue. It's a matter of adaptation. It might be good for California too

    • You must be new to how the government provides assistance to regions that have experienced a natural disaster. Did you just move to the US? Because the way it works is that the governor requests disaster relief from the US government which in turn provides financial aid to that region. And since it has only been maybe 24 hours since these tornadoes hit southern Oklahoma it is too early from aid to have been processed already, but it's only a matter of time!

  • In any state that is in tornado alley or any that have tornadoes with such magnitude.... isn’t there alarms/warnings etc? Do they do special school drills for tornadoes? Safe space to get etc? I’m asking because although anywhere can have a tornado of some kind, not as destructive or deadly such as these (I’m on the west coast and yes we have had some in my lifetime) but our biggest concern and threat is our earthquakes for which we have no warnings and many I’ve been through are to violent to get to a safe place.. only a second to throw yourself off the bed and create an A-frame trying to prevent the crushing of the ceiling , fixtures etc on yourself. Do they periodically access buildings, homes etc? Or is everyone on their own as in ‘I hope one never comes this way’ Or are there building codes for tornadoes? Prayers to all the families going through this horrible tragedy.

    • Yes, we have sirens, but the weather men/women that we depend on just look at radar and local reports of a tornado. It all happens so fast sometimes that there just isn’t enough time to get out of harms way. My neighbors homes are flattened. We have been without power for 24 hours now. There were so many tornadoes popping up in every direction last night and repeat tornadoes going over already hit areas. I mourn for my community as I type this in the dark 😢

      @CapybaraDen@CapybaraDen16 күн бұрын
    • Also, the majority of homeowners have storm shelters here in Southern Oklahoma. When you look at radar, the only way to verify a tornado is when one is already on the ground and causing radar to show a misinterpretation. Which means objects in the air.

    • I live in a town between Sulphur and Marietta here in Oklahoma. Our town was safe this time. So to try and answer your question, yes most towns do have some sort of tornado warning siren. My town tests theirs every Friday at noon to make sure they are working. Many of the smaller towns do not have any sort of warning systems. Schools do have tornado drills that they do as well. No there is no building requirement that I am aware of that businesses have to meet. Although some businesses are built to that standard. As an example, I live in the country between the 2 counties that were hit by the tornadoa. I work for the biggest employer in our county and we have shelters inside our facility. Some towns and schools do have shelters that they will open up for tornado weather but the majority of the people have to fend for themselves. It's roughly 3 to 4 thousand dollars to have an approximate 8x8x8 cellar installed on your property. I'm thankful that I have one. On a side note the biggest employer of our county also has employees from these 2 counties that were hit by tornados. This business is actually shutting down. It was announced a few months ago. Some people will be loosing their job and on top of that may have lost their home as well. It's really sad for our area. Prayers for everyone affected.

    • @@CapybaraDen I’m so sorry😞! I’m sure like us with earthquakes many come through in the middle of the night, hence everyone is asleep and to gather all your loved ones in panic is another added horrific feeling of panic! And with the added ‘multiple tornadoes’ I can’t imagine the horror of no where safe. 😪🙏🏻 My mom told me of sometimes the sirens going off in time to get to safe shelter then others being too late in going off too. She lived in Oklahoma and Arkansas growing up so during that time news channels with weather predictions was extremely rare.

  • This outbreak of April 2024 is similar to the 2011 Super Outbreak of tornadoes which occurred in another tornado alley called Dixie Alley. The outbreak lasted from 25 April to 28 April 2011, with 175 tornadoes struck Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi, most severely and additionally, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana and New York were struck. In all a total of 360 tornadoes were confirmed by the NWS (National weather Service) of NOAA. Courtesy is due to Wikipedia for some of this info. See Wikipedia - 2011 Super Outbreak, for an excellent article on this event. Another very tragic and very costly, but single tornado event, was the 2011 Joplin Tornado, which occurred on early Sunday evening 22 May 2011 around 5:40 PM. Wikipedia has another excellent article on this Joplin tornado event as well.
