Twenty One Pilots On 'Scaled And Icy' & Livestream Show | Video Call
We chatted via Zoom with Twenty One Pilots' Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun, all about the making of their latest album 'Scaled And Icy'. They tell us how they brought out the humanity on tracks like 'Shy Away' while recording the parts in isolation. Plus, find out how their 'Vessel'-era informed the single 'Choker' and why piano is more present on tracks like 'Good Day' and the Ben Folds-influenced 'Mulberry Street'. We also look back on their incredible livestream experience, featuring a multitude of extra musicians and new staging elements that brought the songs to life. to be fair, putting together this enormous livestream must've been their focus in the time leading up to it. after all it's a really complicated show they had to pull of. The record was already finished, so they didn't need to worry about working for it to be completed
The way Tyler thinks through everything so deeply before he does it is just magic I love him and josh so much
I can't believe how incredibly deep and efficient tyler is when vocalizing his inner thoughts. I suck at using metaphors to explain myself, but he has a flawless execution that is so easy to understand. I love it!!! ❤️
As much as we keep fantasizing “oh Tyler’s being controlled by dema,” irl, he’s perfectly fine. He’s in a good place in life and enjoying his wife and child. They made a record that they are satisfied with and they meant every bit of it and explored parts of their musical genius that they haven’t yet

I wonder if they have plans on releasing the live stream in the future. I know it was a one time thing but it's also one of those things that I would love to see again. I would definitely buy it if they were to sell it as a DVD or a downloadable file.

@sofia gonzalez of course you're my friend [: ,and not just because everyone in the clique are friends. I've done purple three times, the first time it didn't show up because I have dark hair and I didn't want to bleach, it was also just a temporary dye. The last two times was a permanent dye and it showed up a lot more, even tho I didn't bleach. It also didn't look purple, it looked like red, so that was fun [': I might try blue next time though, or red. I wanna do pink, but don't want to bleach

The new album is great, this band is great. I've been to 4 shows over the course of their discography and I love this band. But I have to say the new members (while musically they are incredibly gifted and sound great) throw off the energy of the powerful duo that Tyler and Josh have become. Part of what makes them so special to me is them being a two-piece band. I hope I get used to it because they don't seem to be changing the multi-piece band any time soon. Still looking forward to my hometown show in October and that they'll prove me wrong :)
Well the only members of twenty one pilots are Tyler and Josh, the new people are just for the live shows. I do know what you mean though. I think adding more members sort of ruins the magic, bit at the same time it increases it because that means everything is live, no backing tracks
As far as I'm aware, from what we've heard, the guest musicians won't even be present for every single song on the setlist. They will most likely make appearances for songs off of Scaled And Icy, I know their appearance was not limited to those for the Livestream Event but there is always hope that the two-piece energy will be center stage.

Still trying to explain away phoning in an album. A band should sound hungry with every release; but the fact is if this was a debut then it would be the band's one and only album. That's IF they would have got a contract in the first place.

A band should sound hungry and alive with every release: like they're fighting for a contract; this is comfy slippers. And to that end if this were a debut release, there wouldn't be a second offering.
@@bigpauliep6992 that's your opinion. There are a lot of people who really enjoy the album and your personal taste aside, there's some very skilled songwriting on display in several of the tracks. Also I don't understand how a band can sound "hungry"... they clearly put effort and thought into everything they do, right right to the visuals. No less effort than they've done with previous albums.
