  • Coming from someone who works in the polling stations (and will be again this year), please make sure you are eligible to vote in the G.E before turning up to the polling stations. Also, please don't abuse the staff if you are turned away (e.g. your not registered, simply head to the town hall with ID and you can vote there) or if you are told to fill out a form before voting (e.g. if you are voting on behalf of someone else, you will be required to complete a form). The staff are there from 6am till around 10:30-11pm with very few breaks, it's not fair to shout at them for something 1) they didn't do 2) have any control over.

  • So ... 2019 and here we are again. I've been sampling the comments and there seem to be two main groups: (1) those who think a fun day out at the polling station means scribbling puerile jokes on the ballot paper; and (2) those who believe it is better to vote for the least undesirable candidate rather than spoil the paper or not vote at all. Contrary to what somebody here said, spoiled papers ARE counted and the number of rejected ballots is read out when they announce the result. Those who don't vote however simply don't exist as far as the count is concerned. If there is a turnout of less than fifty percent (which has happened on numerous occasions) it means that the non-voters outnumber the votes won by all the candidates added together. How can any of them therefore claim to represent their constituents or to have the support of the majority? If you are minded to spoil your ballot paper or to withhold your vote in the 2019 election please take time to read through this clear and level-headed argument in favour of casting a "None Of The Above" vote. www.votenone.org.uk/menu.html Imagine if the winning candidate got only 25% of the votes but was outnumbered by "NOTA" with 50%. Don't you think that would drive the message home more effectively than drawing a big penis on the ballot paper?

  • I agree with Hannah's message; it is always better to vote if there's a party or local candidate that you feel will represent you well or you agree with a lot of the policies BUT (emphasis, as always, on the but) if you don't want to vote for any of the parties it is far, far better to spoil your ballot (especially in a way that shows it wasn't just accidental e.g. not just ticking where you should cross) than to just not vote. Be included in the statistic and make the government acknowledge that people (young people in particular) care about politics, they just don't like our current political environment. I doubt this video would dissuade anyone from voting if they'd already decided, but if they had decided not to vote, seeing this might make them spoil their vote as a way of giving a fingers up to the system whilst still being politically beneficial to themselves; spoiling your vote is 100% better than just not voting.

  • Putting it OUT there... Spoiling the ballot is like you didn't vote at all and since it's almost exclusively the "young" vote that does this, it means older voters who typically vote for their self interests (as does everyone, no shame here) get their issues addressed while ours are more likely to not be or be ignored. Basically, spoiling the ballot won't change the system sadly and it may well put someone in power that represents you even less. I say vote and at least attempt to get your some of your voice heard.

    @mandy@mandy9 жыл бұрын
    • Mandy I also want to point out that I am aware and understand your vote is counted as 'spoilt' when in parliament, but it's a null entry. As if you didn't vote at all.

      @mandy@mandy9 жыл бұрын
    • Mandy It's the only way to show that you don't agree with any of the parties! It seems like nobody is pleased with any of the politicians running, if all those who say so went and spoiled the ballot there wouldn't be any party reaching a majority. It's more useful than complaining I guess.That being said, I completely agree with you, I've never spoiled the ballot, I'm not english so our voting systems probably work differently and I still think that it is extremely difficult to not find anyone you even remotely respect and could see yourself voting for!

    • Ghotigh TheFish I have to agree. It kind of stucks that a large portion of the nation feels under represented. To an extent no party is ever going to cover everybody and everything - putting this out there, the Verto app by Bite The Ballot is a fantastic tool for proving this. Personally I say change from within, as I think because a majority isn't on board it does do more harm than good. My fear is it will appear "fun" and move those who we're previously going to vote to spoiled because lolz. I do have to applaud Hannah as she is just providing information she feels her audience needs completely unbiased - and that's hard and I understand her reasons. She's a good person and deserves no hate and I want to end by saying I wasn't attacking. I mainly speak from my personal concerns addressed above.

      @mandy@mandy9 жыл бұрын
    • Ghotigh TheFish See I completely disagree. The *only* effective way for us to instigate change and show we don't agree with the present government is through the *creation of new parties representing our interests*, or through *effective and legal protest* if you believe the entire system is flawed. Political apathy is dangerous, since the government banks on our generation not voting, and thus don't bother to really consider our futures or create policies that represent us. And it's a complete insult to the civil rights leaders who fought for women, POC, etc. to have the opportunity to vote, as well as to those living in countries where they cannot vote. The main problem with ballot spoiling, as Mandy mentioned, is that while the numbers of spoiled ballots are tallied, the papers are disposed of and the feedback of what people write on the ballots is not passed on to government. All it says is "I represent this demographic and I choose not to vote, but still care about government," it doesn't convey what we want changed or how we want to be represented, just "we're frustrated." It doesn't mean our voices get heard, it just means politicians sit around and scratch their heads for easy, insignificant changes to make to get the vote next time while still not creating real policies for our generation as they bank on us not voting and (you guessed it) ballot spoiling. They rely on our continued angry silence and disregard us even though we're a key demographic. Imagine the change we could create if we block voted! As such, creating new parties and holding mass protests are surely a more effective way of affecting change since, y'know, *what you're actually dissatisfied about will be conveyed.*

    • Once again, agree. Once I even campaigned for a candidate that I didn't even end up voting for. But I've also found that merely being in the process, as spoiling the ballot would be, compels you to be informed. At least to be able to back your decision, if not for true interest in politics (which is the same as saying true interest in your everyday life, but that's a whole other story). I guess I just see it as getting more people to put their feet in the door (that's an expression, right?)!

  • I don't know if it's different in the UK voting system but I personally think spoiling the ballot is a really different thing to not voting at all. It may have the same outcome in the sense that you didn't actually vote for anyone, but it still sends a different message. Not voting at all means you are not interested in politics, you have nothing to say. Going to vote and spoiling the ballot shows you do actually care about politics and what's happening to and with your government. If a lot of people are unhappy with the voting system and show that by spoiling, the message does come across, if everybody is unhappy and shows that by just bring completely silent and still, it doesn't send a message at all. So I don't encourage people to just go and spoil the ballot, but inform yourself, and if you feel none of the options are good, then go ahead and make your vote invalid by spoiling

    @kira.b@kira.b9 жыл бұрын
    • Kira B Yes but what is that message meant to achieve? There is not going to be some magical saintly perfect party born from the slips of spoilt ballots, not saying you think like that but surely it is getting your voice heard in the same way as a drunk person in the street? People hear your voice but they discard and ignore it afterwards.

  • I've been on both sides on this. (I'm an American, FWIW.) For an election or two early on in my voting life, I didn't vote out of principle. There was no one whom I could stomach, and couldn't bring myself to vote for the lesser of two evils. Later, I realized that not voting, or spoiling the ballot, or writing in someone without a snowball's chance in a very warm place of winning, was a waste of my franchise. I got involved in politics, and began to take some part in campaigning for the candidate I thought would do best what I wanted done. Then, when money became an overriding factor in both parties, and increasingly the single most powerful factor, I voted for the candidate I could at least support and yet sleep at night. In the US, third-party candidates have no chance at the national level, and not much at the state level. Now, in the last decade and a half, the other side (I'm a liberal, so that'd be the Republicans) are so alarmingly horrid that I have to support the Democrats out of sheer self defense and patriotism for the country and state I love. Not voting, or voting in such a way as to protest the process, is effectively voting for the worst elements in our political culture. I can't do that.

  • I'm 21 and I couldn't tell you the names of any of the MPs running in my constituency. The effort to target young people (not in school, college or uni) has been zero. In 2010 I wasn't old enough to vote but I would have voted Lib Dem... Look what happened there. Why should I vote when even in the slightest chance that my party does get elected they'll just not deliver any of their promises. I can't trust any of them. I'll be spoiling my vote until I find a candidate that I can honestly trust. I'm going to be waiting a long time sadly.

  • not to be boring but literally only a century ago women in the UK were dying for the vote, that's how important it is... I get that all political parties are corrupt to some degree and that voting may be a hard choice, but abstaining from voting and having no say in how your country is run is just such the stupidest idea

    @mazgraz@mazgraz9 жыл бұрын
    • Yes women couldn't vote but they can now and spoiling you ballet is still classed as voting. Your voice is still being heard! It's showing that there is not a political party you support. If everybody(able to vote) voted whether it's spoiling the ballet or voting for a part it would make a huge difference!

      @raemarie3446@raemarie34469 жыл бұрын
    • Rachel cave If by spoiing the ballot being classed as voting, you mean it's registered as another vote in the polls, that's true. However, you're still not making a choice out of the candidates, so it can't technically be a vote you've cast in the election.Spoling the ballot and not voting are both forms of abstaining; the only diffrence is that spoiling the ballot involves taking your abstenation to a polling centre. I also disagree with your comment about spoiling the ballot making a huge difference- it is just another way of not casting a vote, and no one viewing ballots in a polling station is really going to be influenced in a reveloutionary way through a scribble on the paper.

  • There are alot of people who don't vote because they are sure that they don't want to vote for one of the existing parties. So spoiling the ballot makes sense in that case because it is one way to show "yeah I want to use my vote. I want to show that I care about the whole thing and make use of my vote or right to vote but there are simply no parties to vote for " Yes, technically it doesn't count but it's different when a high percentage of peoplw don't vote because they don't care or they spoil the ballot. But of course its still better to vote for a party.

I used to live in that part of the world and if you're interested I could recommend a few places to go to around Japan in your free time. (Commented here seen as it's your most recent video). Dan

    @danielwatters638@danielwatters6389 жыл бұрын
  • I'm actually really angry about this video, Hannah, particularly since your videos address a young demographic. As young people in the UK, politicians expect us not to vote and rely on a poor response from our demographic, since if we did block vote for someone, even if they didn't represent us perfectly, we could EASILY sway the balance of power in government. Why do you think their policies tend not to focus on young people and our futures? Because they rely on our continued angry silence. No party will perfectly represent anyone's views unfortunately. I know a lot of people feel their votes won't matter unless they vote Labour/Conservative, but it's rubbish. All of the smaller parties (the SNP, Plaid Cymru, the Greens, etc.) are under no illusion that they won't get a majority or be able to hold overall office. However, by voting for them, there is a much greater chance that the Big 3 will have to form a coalition with them, meaning a louder voice in government for the disenfranchised and more alternative parties (in the words of Sturgeon) "keeping the PM honest" and holding the main parties accountable, as well as giving opportunities to implement some of their policies in minor ways when deals are struck. So a vote for smaller parties/independent candidates ABSOLUTELY matters, if nothing else other than to have more government officials keeping tabs on the main parties, representing the disenfranchised public and (in the long term) gaining more legitimacy as contenders. After all, that's how the Lib Dems and Labour developed as major parties, through public support growing them from small forces to major opponents. You can't affect any kind of change if you throw away the one way to create change. Spoiling a ballot just means your voice won't get heard and you'll look like a child throwing a tantrum. If you don't feel there is any party that truly represents the change you want, create one and stand next time! There is nothing stopping us from creating parties that represent us or standing in our own right. We're in an era where British politics are changing dramatically. We want change, so we should band together and MAKE that change happen! If you don't want to create change through voting because you believe the system is flawed, then rebel! Start marches, campaign for the causes you want to be represented, start a revolution! BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DON'T SPOIL YOUR BALLOT. That is Slacktivism of the highest order and will not produce any kind of change, nor will it get your voice heard.

    @dimavasilev5342@dimavasilev53429 жыл бұрын
    • This is all true but why should young people have to vote for parties that don't care about them? Tactical voting imo is silly. If you want to vote, vote for a party you want to vote for. And if you don't want to vote for any of these parties surely then it would be better not to vote for one just for the sake of it? Spoiling the ballot (though not very influential) is a way of speaking out for what you believe in and if you feel let down by the parties you are faced with then why not spoil it? Spoiling is better than not even registering.

    • Dima Vasilev All votes are counted, recorded and announced for each constituency. That included all ballot papers where the voter has not voted for a candidate, i.e. spoiled the ballot paper. If anything spoiling the ballot is the largest call for change.

      @SeriouslyCross@SeriouslyCross9 жыл бұрын
    • ***** ProfessorBlub I disagree on the tactical voting side, I'd much rather someone voted tactically so we didn't get parties like the BNP and UKIP representing constituencies than didn't vote at all. I agree, we shouldn't have to vote for parties we don't feel represent us or care about us. Surely then the solution is to temporarily pick the lesser of however many evils (I'm cringing just writing that) and *start our own parties to represent us in the next elections*? Or *hold protest marches* to vocally show which issues are significant to us? The main problem with ballot spoiling is that while the numbers of spoiled ballots are tallied, the papers are disposed of and the feedback of what people write on the ballots is not passed on to government. All it says is "I represent this demographic and I choose not to vote, but still care about government," it doesn't convey what we want changed or how we want to be represented, just "we're frustrated." As such, creating new parties and holding mass protests are surely a more effective way of affecting change since, y'know, *what you're actually dissatisfied about will be conveyed.* Still, everyone's entitled to an opinion, but I think there are much more effective ways of conveying disenfranchisement that actually give us a voice.

    • mattyrrp It will show up that someone of your age/gender/race etc showed up to vote, although it won't say what you voted for. Future candidates are more likely to look at who voted in the last elections when they are making their policies, to gear them towards people who vote (this is why so many politicians pledge so much to pensioners, cos they vote!) This will help in the future to make sure that politicians create manifestos that reflect every section of our society, rather than just the vocal minorities.

      @gemsssx@gemsssx9 жыл бұрын
    • mattyrrp What it means is that, as Scott has said, they will have to say how many ballots were spoiled. What it DOESN'T mean is that your vote will count. If you spoil your ballot, it is the equivalent of not voting at all. Your voice will not get heard and your views will not be counted. As a young demographic, we will never be taken seriously politically and our needs will never be catered for if we take Hannah's angry slacktivism approach. If you don't agree with the parties, create a new one so there's someone who represents us next time. If you don't agree with voting, rebel and hold protests and marches to get our voices heard. But not voting and spoiling ballots does neither and creates absolutely no change.

    • Dima Vasilev You're implying it's fair system. Our system is broken, and the power is not determined by the will of the people. The point is legitimacy. Voting gives legitimacy to the ruling system. I would argue that it might be better to not vote at all, than to spoil the vote, because as mentioned above, you will still be counted in the "voting turnout". Voting turnout is often taken as the best indicater of the legitimacy amongst "the people", not unfairly. If spoilt votes becomes a massive issue, which it probably won't, then it might be adressed, ie talked about in the media. Rather, don't vote, and be vocal politically why.The young in other countries are doing it, most notably Scandinavia and Spain.

I feel like it's an insult that while I'm able to vote that I would not do it properly due to some anarchy based pointless exercise. You might as well not bother voting if you spoil your ballot it really wouldn't be much different. I also vote to prevent people that could harm my country or people in it aka ukip and BNP. I hope no one takes this for more than what it is an treat this video as satire.

    • trevsweb I personally think it's far better to spoil than ballot than not vote at all. At least then you're demonstrating that you would like to be politically active, but feel that nobody in politics represents your interests. Being apathetic about politics and not caring to even register is more of an insult to those who are not enfranchised in other countries (plus women in the uk got total voting rights under a hundred years ago, kinda a slap in the face to those who campaigned to not exercise that right imo). But yes, I agree that voting strategically to keep parties like BNP and UKIP out is sometimes better than spoiling. If I was in a real UKIP risk area I would even consider voting tory aha.

      @bubblyaero14@bubblyaero149 жыл бұрын
    • Anna Lizzy I disagree. Spoiling the ballot is just a form of slacktivism. If we want parties that represent us, we should create them do there's someone to vote for next time. If we disagree with voting full stop, we should hold protests and marches so our voices are still heard. Political apathy is dangerous, since the government banks on our generation not voting, and thus don't bother to really consider our futures or create policies that represent us. And like you said, it's a complete insult to the civil rights leaders who fought for women, POC, etc. to have the opportunity to vote, as well as to those living in countries where they cannot vote. But I would definitely class ballot spoiling on the same level as not even bothering to register. All that happens is the constituency notes the numbered of spoiled papers and the demographics they represent. It doesn't mean our voices get heard, it just means politicians sit around and scratch their heads for easy, insignificant changes to make to get the vote next time. Just look at the policies concerning education and youth employment. It's no surprise that the newer parties like the Greens and the Nationalist parties are better representatives of our generations, they're the only ones who've suggested policies that have a hint of real change in them. Agreed on the tactical voting part though, down with UKIP and the BNP!

  • Isn't there an argument that by entering the ballot box at all - even if you spoil the form - you're still signalling you think the voting system is valid, implicitly consenting to be ruled by the winner (unlike if you stay home)? I know you're not actually endorsing ballot-spoiling - I just think amid all the "Young people, THOU SHALT VOTE" campaigns, it's worth talking about some of the more nuanced aspects.

  • Don't waste your vote!! Yes, it hurts that a lot of people are now picking 'the best of a bad bunch' but honestly, wasting your paper is just going to allow the old (the least likely to spoil their ballot) to choose the government - probably the same as it has been for years *because old people are, generally, afraid of change!!!* This means there will be no change, just the same old shit. I'll be voting the SNP, which I'm extremely excited about, for more powers in Scotland :D

  • In the Netherlands, you can leave the ballot blank and it will be counted as a 'none-of-the-above' vote, that will be registered seperately from incorrect or intelligible votes, showing up in the results like this; Party A 100 votes Party B 54 votes Party X 21 votes Blank 12 votes Incorrect/intelligible 9 votes Sure, they both won't matter in the long run but voting blank is considered an conscious act of disapproval, while spoiling your ballot will make you look like an idiot who doesn't know how to vote.

    @cecasander@cecasander9 жыл бұрын
    • cecasander In the uk we currently don't have a way of expressing a "none of the above" statement, so spoiling your ballot is the only way to engage in active protest against all parties/the current voting system.

  • Can someone give me a concise and clear argument as to the failures of the Conservative Party? Thanks

    @XDskateable@XDskateable9 жыл бұрын
    • Not very technical but basically the conservatives want to make cuts to public spending on institutions like education and the nhs rather than increasing taxes to the wealthy in order to reduce spending as we're in an economic crisis. The problem with this is that many feel it's unethical to reduce spending in areas such as education, and to privatise the nhs, and would have a severe negative effect upon the masses' life in the uk and would only benefit the top percent!

  • Sorry Hannah but for me this video got tiring really quickly. Don't get me wrong. I liked the general idea of it but after point 4 or 5 you totally lost me. For sure the next video is gonna be awesome again, though :) ALSO: As a German I have no clue about the vote system in the UK so I don't know if the following even applies to you guys, but in Germany the parties need to reach at least 5% of the votes to get seats at all. So if you decide between not going at all or write "all of the above" it makes no difference. If you have a general idea of what you could vote though, you should do exactly that, because if you don't, the small parties l, that you don't want in need less votes to reach those 5%. That's a big factor that needs to be considered (if a rule like that exists in the UK) and you could have mentioned that ;) Still love your work :) keep doing what you do :) lots of love :*

  • IF YOU'RE EADING THIS AND YOU'RE ALLOWED TO VOTE IN THE UK... GO VOTE!!!!! YOU NOT VOTING DOESN'T MAKE YOU A REVOLUTIONARY NOR IS AN EFFECTIVE WAY OF PROTESTING. PROTEST BY VOTING SMALLER PARTIES THAT YOU CAN RELATE TO, BUT NOT DOING IT, ONLY PERPETUATES MORE INEQUALITIES WITHIN THE POLITICAL SYSTEM (THE MAJOR PARTIES WOULD BENEFIT THE MOST) BUT I GUARANTEE IT WON'T FIX IT!!!

  • I normally love your videos, but as a politics student I felt the need to make a small criticism of this video. I understand that you made it due to lots of people not knowing what 'spoiling the ballot' is but surely it would have been better to make a video encouraging political participation rather that giving people ways to make their votes void. Maybe as a way of using your platform to promote political participation you could go through the manifestos, impartially, and highlight the policies for young people and so encourage 18-25 year olds to use their vote to make a change. After all the suffragettes didn't fight for years so that people could spoil their ballot papers.
