Will new UK voter ID rules make it harder to vote? - BBC News

People will need to show photo ID before being allowed to vote in England’s local elections on 4 May, and at any future UK general election.
The government says the new rules will help prevent voter fraud but critics claim the changes will make it harder for some to vote.
Ros Atkins explains.

  • It makes sense. I was honestly baffled the first time I went to vote, and found that I didn't need photo ID. That being said, efforts need to be made to lower the cost of getting photo ID.

    • A: Convictions is a poor measure of how much of a problem it is. How do you know it’s not rife and people just aren’t getting caught? B: Being proactive instead of reactive is a much better approach. A risk, as I’m sure you’re aware, is the risk that something ‘might happen’, otherwise it would be an issue. So surly you’re not using number of convictions as a measure of probability?

    • Yeah. Sure. Because who would have any interest in rigging elections or cheating. Requiring photo ID for electiins is _common sense_ and if you, as a _risk manager_ of all things, thought it is disproportionate, I'd have you fired for gross incompetence. Good grief, hearing this makes me glad I live in South Africa. Our electoral system seems to be lightyears more advanced than that of the UK and US.

  • I just voted today. On top of the voter suppression by the back door with the photo ID requirement, the Tories have a number on the back of your voting slip tied to your name & address on their lists so your vote is NOT confidential. They say it's nationwide. I hope they get voted out.

Voter fraud in the West is basically non-existent because it's way too easy to get caught for very little payoff. FpTP makes it even more difficult to sway an election with such small scale discrepancies.

    • @@realhawaii5o the previous government tried to introduce ID cards but the party that is now the government objected to that because people freaked out and thought the country would turn into na*i Germany with police checking people's ID all the time. Now that party is demanding we present ID to vote. It's all a bit silly. I would support introducing standardised ID cards as long as they are either free or cheap to the citizen. It would make a lot of things simpler if everyone had a card to prove who they were that would be accepted for everything. Our passports are very expensive at about £100 so people don't get one unless they actually travel abroad and people who do have one don't use it for other things in case they lost it.

In addition, why do people have to register for these IDs? If the government is going to do a program like this, it better damn well make sure it's automatically issuing IDs to every eligible voter. The only people this will affect are people who don't find out before the deadline on 25th or people who don't know how to use the internet. • This is a solution in search of a problem….that doesn’t exist. If there was statistically significant voter fraud, then I could get behind fair voter ID but it’s an obvious and transparent attempt to put up a speed bump for opposition voters. The types of ID accepted preferences oap’s yet again, they may have the time to complain but they are way over-represented in budget and every other decision in government and it’s got to a point of abuse now. Their senses have slowed down (as it will for us all) so everyone else must drive much slower to accommodate them, we’re going bankrupt because they have a triple lock that actual workers could only dream of, they get free public travel, discounted energy and countless other expensive things while the rest of the country can’t buy food due to high taxes and inflation costs. This voter Id nonsense is pandering to some old grumpy buggers and it has been seized upon by a government and twisted to serve its own purposes. I don’t trust labour after their disastrous time in power last time (devolution damn near ripping country apart, a ridiculous war, inadvertently setting Brexit in motion by not implementing a gradual right to move here like just about every other member did) but conservatives are showing zero ambition and using distasteful divide & conquer techniques straight out of America’s broken democracy.
