Feeding wild hyenas outside the walled city of Harar in Ethiopia

  • This is actually a tradition that goes back over 400 years. The people believed that the hyenas could get rid of all the bad spirits that roam the streets. When the hyenas get into the city walls, their behavior changes. Making the, kind to the men in the city,

    • Still stupid tho. It’s already been proven to show that animals as pristine people with food is a dangerous thing. One day these hyenas are going to come looking for food but maybe all they will find are a couple kids and then what will they do?

    • @@jeremyj5932feeding wild animals is usually dangerous because animals lose their natural wariness of humans, and no longer fear humans. Once animals realize that we don't have much physical strength to back up our size, it tends to get dicey. Hyenas don't seem to share that same instinctive fear that most animals do, or at least they aren't as fearful as most north american and eurasian species. Probably due to coexisting with humans for much longer. I wouldn't recommend it as a hobby but if it's actually a long standing tradition then these folks probably know what they're doing. I doubt it's a tradition that would last if even a single hyena became hostile in the past. Not really the kind of mistake you make twice.

  • These hyenas have no reason to attack the man. Why risk injury when they are getting a free meal? With every feeding session they are becoming more domesticated. The man is creating a relationship/bond with a level of mutual respect. Who knows how long he has been doing this or what precautions were made earlier on before the animals and this man became comfortable with each other.

      @Isochest@Isochest8 жыл бұрын
    • Hararis absolutely do have an arrangement with the Hyenas; in fact they have an entire culture founded on Hyenas. Some see the Hyenas as helpful in keeping "bad spirits" away. I could go on but instead it's better I share with you a really good book on this: "Among The Bone Eaters" by Marcus Baynes-Rock, which shares all about what's going on here and what the Hyenas mean to the Hararis. Over time not only have the two species, Hyenas and humans, found the ways to co-exist, they have grown a mutually beneficial relationship. Harar is one of the only places where Hyenas are welcomed and respected, no matter what the "tourist show" might make the situation appear to be. Take care out there, dear Hyenas, I wish you well, whatever well means to you. Blessings... Toni... Pennsylvania, USA...

So they have the same respect for the humans they are familiar with and who bring them food. Of course, hyena respect needs to be earned...

  • In Ethiopia, Hyenas and people have a long, historic, accommodation. On March 5, 2014, The Guardian Unlimited had a fascinating article on hyenas around Addis Ababa, a metropolis of 5 million. (Addis Ababa and its Hyenas Have a Long and Peaceful History.) Personally I understand hyenas as the most persistent and vicious predators. They respect people, however.

    @bircruz555@bircruz55510 жыл бұрын
    • But many people don’t respect them, if you see those lion vs hyena videos comments, most of the people are absolute hating hyenas, saying that they are “evil” and “disgusting” or “rats” or “deserve to die” while praising the lion.

      @darkmatterhafnium1522@darkmatterhafnium15225 жыл бұрын

    • @@Redstoneprime316 People call hyenas things like “devils” or “evil” because they kill and eat almost anything. Now let’s take a look at the human race. There are factories in the world full of tightly packed animals that live their life in the solitude of their cage that is barely larger than their body. Those animals usually go crazy in their cages and try to kill themselves. And on to another thing meat grinders. I’ve seen baby pigs thrown into grinders screaming and begging for their lives. Pigs are intelligent animals but those people treated them as insects and even laughed as the babies screamed not wanting to die. Most people know these things exist but they could care less. At the end of the day if you and the kind old lady across from your house were poisoned and had one pill to save yourselves, she would choose herself every time. So between hyenas and humans who are the real “devils”?

    • Most animals you see on KZhead are small until you see them in person. The first time I saw an okapi at the London zoo, I was stunned. She were massive. Over 6.5 feet tall and looked at least 450kg at the smaller side.

  • Hyenas have some of the strongest jaws in the animal kingdom--they shatter bones easily. And he puts the stick in his mouth coming inches away from those teeth. Godlike. Also, digging those awesome warm-ups the guy is sporting.

I've always liked them, never understood why people dismiss them so quickly without giving them a fair chance.

    • Stronger than lion, stronger than shark or crocodile. They eat freakin' bones. I don't mean little bones, but elephant bones. I don't know of any other mammal that can do that. From what I've read, they have the strongest jaws and bite of any other large mammal.

    • @@angelitogumera4082 You're right, and I stand corrected. Years ago I'd heard this about spotted hyenas from what I thought was a reputable source. Well, it wasn't. I'm not arguing here, you're correct in everything you said, but I've always been a "fan" of hyenas and their bite is truly impressive, especially given their much smaller size compared to lions and tigers. Anyway, thanks for the correction. I learned something here and that's always a good thing.

I am surprised they don't all gang up on those people feeding them, perhaps they don't because there are many more people around that we don't see on this video.
