In Nigeria there is a very mysterious band of brothers, a colourful troop of entertainers who are actually medicine men, they have a very interesting marketing tool as they perform with dangerous animals in order to attract crowds. The hyena men as they are referred to, were born into this tradition that they have perfected, generation after the generation.

    • +Jauckor How many of us found ourselves really liking these guys? I did. Immensely. Very interesting, the role they play within that society. they are a connection to the nativity of their race and their indigenous culture. The men who tame the wild animals are the shamans of old: even here in north America my wild animals are the Golden Eagle and when I do my ceremonies in an area they "ALWAYS" show up. You wonder about some species and when I was becoming aware of my Aboriginal culture in Canada as a Native man and the eagles started coming toward me all the time and I had "visions" of them and dreams and my clan mother told me what to do about it. Once I established 'contact' with them they came down to a place called the "Forks of the Credit" along the Niagara Escarpment and about 24 of them were all around my car and kept sort of intimating to me to climb up to the top of the ridge- cliff. Once I got up there, maybe a few hundred feet I saw all the smaller eagles that I mean were maybe 3 or 4 feet in their wingspan then a Grandfather came. I never had any idea they got6 so bloody big. It was at leat 12 feet maybe 15 and a body around 3 feet long with a fan off it's back the size of both of my hands spread out. Truly a big bird. Huge, in fact. It kinds of scared me. I kept thinking "what have I really gotten myself into here? Giant fucking eagles? OMG. I didn't know what to think and it took me hours to come down off that ridge i was so affected. There is some kind of feral and primevil energy, a spiritual force involved in these beings, these animalas "archetypal' examples of our collective unconscious and how we are all connected into the web of life which for the paradigm I talk about is more pervasive and "spiritual" but not in a mythos kind of way but in a way that the quantum mechanics figured reality to be. That is the infinite field theory and energy is neither created nor destroyed but moves into and out of this field in vertical ands horizontal ways. Such as every living being is related to every other being as they have an energy fingerprint in the eternal field. This might be quantified as interspecies development and interconnectedness. A vertical shift would signify a different kind of stratified distribution of those species in terms of IQ's, or complex thought, complex physiologies, pharmacology, the interpretive data presented through psychological investigation over the last 150 years. Gets pretty wild eh? Considering that I got my name when my brother and I drove up to the area one afternoon and as we were walking around this glacial lake five of the Golden Eagles flew around my head five times. My clan mother said that signified my name Five /eagles but to the Ojibwa the sacredness of five means a Warrior standing in balance with the Creator, the family, the tribe, the community and self. It was assumed that a healthy individual had a pretty deep understanding of the Mother /earth, her medicines and how to go get them and prepare. Many traditional people knew how to live like this.

    • +Jauckor A way that I want to respond to what you say is the establishment of Constitutions in some countries emerging into independence and finally moving past the curse of some of their petty tyrants. Uganda, for instance seemed to have a National Revival in which the majority of the people were born again Christians and they accomplished much .

    • I could say there is a lot of "mistreating animals" when we kill millions of chickens, cows, rabbits, etc, per year only to get our hungry satisfied. I could say there is a lot of "mistreating animals" when we explote oil in natural enviroments and polute the rainforest to get tables and chairs, despite of the animals that we kill in the process and after the result of the desintegration of its habitat. I could say there is a lot of "mistreating animals" when we as humans ver populate the world and we are taking natural land to build our houses, despite of the animals which live there. It's hard to understand but the world is already took by humans and every practice that we do it will be always a "mistreating animals".

    • +Jauckor Livestock are killed humanely to minimize suffering. Environments are destroyed but the animal is still free although the ecosystem may be disturbed at least the animal has its freedom. Keeping an animal against its will to perform whether in a circus or whatever is equivalent to daily torture which creates animal suffering many time greater than anything we do in the first world. At least we kill our animals to end their suffering

  • This is quite dangerous. I understand that these people are doing what they are doing just to be able to feed themselves and their families, but the Nigerian government needs to do something about this. It needs to provide an alternative source of income for these desperate people so that they will stop these kinds of money-making activities, which are dangerous because of possible disease transfer from animals to humans, and also because it is unfair to the animals themselves that they should be treated like this.

  • So many blind fools talking about animal abuse, animal rights, when an animal can get ripped to pieces in nature by lions, leopards, parasites, or even cannibalised by there own kind as babies.... Idiots have no concept of the harshness of nature and WILD animals. Trust me captive animals have it much better. Wild animals have no concept of cruelty they eat other animals ALIVE to survive. If you want to imagine animals as fluffy pillows go ahead but you are fooling yourself as they are far from that and would rip your throat out without a second thought just for another meal. Besides the fact that the conditions these PEOPLE live in in 2014 are unacceptable but no one cares about people anymore they'd rather humanise WILD beasts and fantasize through rose tinted glasses about them being perfect and fluffy pillows incapable of wrongdoing. If man reverted back to being a WILD animal would you prefer that? A caveman who showed no remorse to his enemies killing for fun and food, keeping pets and treating them like crap. Animals too kill for fun and play with their prey, look at how cats play with and torment mice why don't you scream "ANIMAL RIGHTS!!!" "STOP CRUELTY TO ANIMALS" at them from your cosy comfy fluffy little padded room. Seriously some people need a reality check, leave them out in the middle of Africa outside their cosy room and see how long they survive lol....

  • 20:50 shows them spending time caring for the hyenas and other animals. By the way, anyone calling this cruel to the animals, may be correct on a continuum, but I think it would be worse to have the animal in isolation in some cage in a zoo. Not to mention the horrible life they could endure in nature away from human care. On a sad note, I am not impressed with the american Brian Hawn. He does not get to spend as much time with his pet hyena, as these hyena men seem to spend with theirs. I tend to agree with the dog whisperer and a few things he says. He has worked with cats, pot belly pigs, and other animals. He advocates Exercise, Discipline-leadership (rules, boundaries, limitations) and Affection. He achieves this through creating Trust, Respect, and Loyalty. I hope Brian Hawn can take note, and possible begin to show more leadership with his Hyena, with that he could introduce his pet to other humans or mammals which could keep the Hyena company. For now his story is only a partial success in my opinion.

For those hypocrites talking about "animal abuse", probably those hyenas eat better and are more healthy than actual hyenas in the freedom. We all are under "invisible chains" tied to our crap jobs and every day routines after all. Some people has to live by doing something using what they have around. As this documentary explains is not that a lot of people do this...but these guys do it since their family did this for generations.

    • KeepCalmnCarrion Oh yes, because they don't need to hunt, they get regular meals, and because they have no quarrel with lions or other predators. Also, if you watched the video - not saying you didn't, I wasn't there when you commented, so I really don't know - then you would know that hyenas are considered part of witchcraft by many in Africa, and thus are hunted and killed by the humans. Also, many animals dig holes for many reasons. Hyenas, in particular, live in dens - otherwise known as large holes in the ground. The hyenas have just made beds for themselves. As for the jumping and tugging, most of that is trained in. Some of the tugging may be similar to what your average domestic dog does: the "Hey I want to sniff that, let's go!" tug, I guess you could say. In short, you don't really have a lot of facts to back up your argument. Also, I highly doubt those muzzles could even potentially suffocate the hyenas. Want my reference for the facts? Here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spotted_hyena#Behaviour Figured I should put that. Most people don't.

    • Zander Maria they love to hunt and run free!! would you like to be chained up abused and unable to make a natural life for a lousy free meal?? what makes you think you know anything about hyenas and what they want? For one thing they are yanked on constantly and violently, what woukd make you think that they woukd like that? Do you think a dog would like to be handled that way? If so i hope you're not a pet owner! Plus they sweat through they're mouth while panting, those muzzles would obstruct their breathing and ability to cool themselves! The level of stress would be extreme and the food woud most likely be subpar to say the least!

How incredibly comforting it must be, otherwise to stand in an air conditioned podium and speak of passion..

  • Amazing! For all you animal lovers out there just stop. I am the biggest animal lover ever and I don't have a problem with this! Its not like they are killing them for their tusks and throwing them out like garbage. This is their heritage passed down for generations. These animals don't appear abused. It looks as if these men love and care for these animals. This is their tradition and they are proud of it. I am proud for them. Come on people we are all different and we should learn and celebrate all peoples and cultures. Good grief peace and love to you all. (no animals were harmed during this video) :)
