In the popular TV series "The Walking Dead" humans can hide from zombies by covering themselves in zombie guts, masking their scent. The California ground squirrel (Otospermophilus beecheyi) uses a similar tactic to hide from a major predator, the rattlesnake, which relies on smell to track down its prey.

  • California ground squirrels develop some immunity to rattlesnake venom, perhaps because of this behavior. They also lick their pups (which don't develop the immunity until one month of age) with their snakeskin-infused spit to give them a "booster".

  • That snake must be extremely slow for it to lock onto its preys' scent and the squirrels was able to find shed snake skin and start chewing on it to get the scent from the skin and then to be able to rub it all over its body. AND the other squirrels were able to do the same thing and was even able to cover their babies with the snake skin scent. After all that, the snake gets confused and wanders away. Yeah.. Okay...
