  • The dream of flying cars always amuses me. While generation of lift is done with propellers of any shape or form, the noise will render the concept a non-starter. We've had 3 helicopters ferrying tourists to see a local volcano when it is active and they fly over the capital every 30 minutes or so. Just 3 of them are driving everyone nuts here. They are small 4-6 passenger light helicopters. Also consider the limits set on drone flights because the sound they make bothers people at tourist attractions (not to mention hazard of falling onto someone). All videos trying to present flying "cars" as a good idea always cut out the sound and play some gentle music instead. These things would be crazy loud if you consider they are just really big drones.

  • Colonel Diller sounds more like a DEI green energy promotion path than a serious military leader and engineer. Let's start with the logistics of a new technology rather than the new technology. So you have an electric airplane that can't be recharged in air so it needs to always return to it's base. That base will have to have the means to recharge the electric plane. So if it takes a very long time to recharge a care how much longer will it take to recharge a plane that needs perhaps 100 times the time to get it ready for its next mission than a jet. The batteries to drive an electric car increases the weight with respect to conventional cars and so that is added wear on the roads and reduces the duration of the charge. The weight of the batteries on an electric plane is far greater than on a car and so it subtracts from the payload it can carry. What about the supply, maintenance and the training needed to support an electric aircraft? You now have both jet engines to maintain and support and different fuels to run the generators to recharge the electric planes. So I always see the excitement of electric tanks, military vehicles, aircraft, etc. but I never see the supply, logistics, maintenance, or sortie rates electric anything can generate that is more than the sortie rates we have with conventional equipment. And from where does all of this electricity come to charge hundreds of thousands of military equipment? Gee, it's generators that require fossil fuels because the military can't rely on the constant supply of commercial electricity but it can rely on the constant supply of fossil fuels by multiple different methods. Maybe in the distant future the technology will allow electric vehicles to travel as far as conventional cars and there will be enough charging stations with the technology that you can recharge your EV faster than a gas station. And maybe in the future the military will have a way to recharge their electric vehicles and aircraft without using fossil fuels and can recharge them faster than they can with conventional jets. Given the history of the evolution of new technologies that will impact the entire transportation of the US and the military, I think we are still about 50 to 100 years away IF we can solve the problem of generating sufficient electricity without fossil fuels. However, places like California are shutting down fossil and nuclear fuels without having the needed wind (which is too expensive), solar (which is too expensive), and hydroelectric capacity to come close to replacing fossil and nuclear. But they have mandated in law without any evidence that alternatives can support California. Guess what, California is importing electricity from neighboring states. Gee, you would think that a State that has declared it has no use for fossil or nuclear electricity wouldn't think of importing electricity from other states who are producing electricity from fossil and nuclear. Liberals are complete morons. They only care about their agendas without considering the consequences.

  • I am very much in favor of new technology and innovation. There is a place for any or all electric vehicles. However electric has a big short coming, energy density. Battery technology does not have an even close energy density to carbon based fuels. Energy density in batteries will continue to improve but in my view it will be many years before it approaches that of carbon based fuels. So for a very long time there will be a market need for both. Unless great detail to safety and backup systems are payed attention to a single fuse could down an aircraft. As a former military person and an Electronic Engineering Technician, in a combat situation a fast recharge will still need to be accomplished by carbon based fuel generators mitigating the zero emission aspect. I should suggest helical toroidal propellers which would increase efficiency by about twenty percent. Keep moving ahead this is impressive technology.

    • You need much less energy in an electric aircraft, even todays lithium ion batteries are able to provide around one hour of flight time for electric aircraft, there are already certified electric planes out there, and they have 10 year old battery technology. As right now energy density goes up by the month, in the very near future flight times around 2 hours will be possible, which is more than enough for many tasks (short range passenger flights, emergency services, package delivery...) electric aircraft will have tremendously reduced costs per flighttime, as all the hot section engine problems go away, electric motors do not need regular maintenance, cost reduction will be HUGE !

      @hanswallner2188@hanswallner21882 ай бұрын
    • @@hanswallner2188 Lift is determined by the shape and size of the wings. Pound for pound it takes the same amount of energy to get identical panes in the air regardless of whether it is fossil fuels or electric. "You need much less energy in an electric aircraft," is not true. Getting an aircraft in the air is not the issue maintaining flight is the issue. As you stated "lithium ion batteries are able to provide around one hour of flight time" fossil fuels have a much higher energy density, meaning they can stay in the air longer. Someday it may be a reality that we will have long range electric flight, it is not today.

AS solid state batteries improve, storage of peak and over windy and sunny days, will even it out and we can ONCE again rely on the sun- directly instead of waiting 60,000 millions of years for sun grown vegetation to turn into coal and oil. Recently one MAJOR European country experienced enough solar and wind, it could power the entire country!
