Wagner chief Prigozhin halts march on Moscow: What happened? | DW News

2024 ж. 22 Мам.
1 266 024 Рет қаралды

The head of the Wagner Mercenary group has called off an armed uprising in Russia. Yevgeny Prigozhin had directed his forces along a major highway towards Moscow, saying he wanted to oust Russia's military leadership. But in a post on the messaging service Telegram, Prigozhin has now said Wagner is pullings its troops back to avoid spilling Russian blood.
The city of Rostov-on-Don near the Russian border with Ukraine went through a turbulent day. Wagner's forces arrived there early on Saturday, securing control of key military positions. But after less than 24 hours, they could soon be leaving.

  • It makes perfect sense once you realize that for Prigozhin it was always about Self Preservation. He was essentially forced to march on Moscow in a "win or die" situation, after Putinn over reacted earlier threatening jail. Knowing that, the Russian negotiators gave Prigozhin what he wanted and a deal was made within an hour. There are no "concessions" to look for or wonder about; it was never about a "march for Justice", but about self preservation.

    • There are two words in Russian that refer to homeland, otechestvo and rodina. The first is formed from the root otets or father. The historical name for WWII is the Great War for the Fatherland. In a military context, fatherland is perfectly neutral and not significant. Rodina does not come from mother, but from birth, so birth land. While there have long been references to Mother Russia, there is no linguistic equivalent of motherland.

    • IDK, I kind of doubt that's the case. Putin made his choice early June by passing a decree where all military forces must sign a contract with the MoD. That basically means kicking Prigozhin out and having him surrender his men to Shoigu. That's likely why he made a move. He lost the power struggle and this was his last chance to turn it around. Why he backed down is still unknown, maybe he realized he won't succeed(even though it had been a cakewalk thus far) and decided to get off at the first exit ramp Lukashenko provided him with.

    @StillGamingTM@StillGamingTM11 ай бұрын
  • Alternative explanation: "Russia's defense minister has ordered all 'volunteer detachments' to sign a contract with the ministry." This move meant Prigozhin was being outmaneuvered by the leadership of Russia. But the defence ministry didn't allow Prigozhin to deliver the signed agreement/contract. So therefore Prigozhin was at risk of being arrested for being in violation of the requirement to sign the contract with the defence ministry. Therefore Prigozhin had in Chess terms been set "Check" by the defence ministry. The move by Pregozhin moved the "King" to Belarus & therefore Pregozhin is not likely to be "Checkmate" in the near future...

In the same way that people were asking how and why Prigozhin has been allowed to get away with his antics for all this time, other than simply because of his vast resources. But, if anyone thinks that Lukashenko just picked up the phone and said, “Come now gentlemen, let us calm down and see if we can’t come to a settlement here,” and they both said, “Okay,” is out of their minds. The Americans seem to think this is an elaborate ruse, possibly with a view to opening a northern offensive against Kyiv, from Belarus? I don’t know myself, though we should hope the Putin is that dumb and that desperate, but there’s certainly big pieces of this jigsaw that are missing to the extent that we in the west cannot make out the picture yet.
