    • according to a quick google search the complete encyclopedia britannica takes 2 CDs - which according to another quick search looks to be about 2 x 650 Mb - so one encyclopedia per shot would be 21Kb/sec if it takes a minute fire - so 3 sets of encyclopedia per firing at that rate would just about match dial up - I think firing is probably slower than 1 shot per minute but I may be wrong

  • Hey Tod. I had a thought while I was a work that I wanted to run buy you as it relates to archery and Agincourt. Just how dense a formation can you get with archers? Obviously they need their space since archery requires a lot of movement. Then there’s also a matter of how deep the ranks are. Eventually you’ll get to a point where you’ll get too many rows of men and the back ranks won’t have a clear line of sight to the target. Also, it’s said that when the archers at Agincourt had ran out of arrows, they pulled out their hand weapons and attacked the French from behind. But wouldn’t they have been tired from shooting? I believe the archers must have been regularly rotated off the front lines. The shooting line would shoot for a time, then retire off the line after that time, then there’d go grab arrows, drink water and rest. Then there’d move back up once the other units that replaced them had gotten tired. That way you’d be able to maintain constant fire and still have enough energy to fight in a melee. So I propose this to you as a Video idea. An endurance test, to see just how long archer can shoot for. And a test that finds out just how dense a formation you can get away with. Maybe involving a bunch of your men at arms targets to simulate other bowmen. This is something that seems like it should have been written down somewhere. But there have been a few cases on this channel of things being done “in the usual way” and not having any clue what that means.

  • As much as I love the trebuchet, I'm curious about Tod's thoughts on the proposed crossbow and also broadhead ban.

    @ihcfn@ihcfn2 ай бұрын
    • Not really the place for it, but I think it will come to nothing much in the short term and will tighten up in the longer term, but tbh I own several modern crossbows, none of them particularly special and even so the power is far more than required for garden or club shooting and in fact I often destroy the bolts using them and prefer to shoot weaker bows as they are ultimately more fun. (Modern) Broad heads have no legal purpose at all in the UK as you can't hunt with bows, so I understand the drive to remove them from sale. So broadly I am in agreement with tightening them up a bit.

I think you need to sit down with 'Pub Landlord' and thrash it out? Delighted to hear you can't shoot it blank? That suggests to me that it's near perfect, the machine will wreck itself if it doesn't have enough resistance (please excuse my french, awful joke, I know, French resistance?) But you are talking to the guy with half his living-room pulled up to find a leak in the mains water supply, lucky I probably only have to replace half the floor. But wait, it gets better? one of the cat's decided the 'hole' was a great place to take a dump, and where one goes, it's like open season? But wait, there's more? I got refused for a job, a Chaplaincy in Kilkenny? Hard to understand, just because I'm a Catholic? I thought there was laws about discrimination? In all fairness though, I did write a letter explaining that I wasn't really prime Clerical material, well some people have no sense of humour?
