PLEASE take this out with the 4WD 24/7 boys and send it into a few hard tracks. Never in my life thought I'd consider selling the Hilux for a Defender, but the Grenadier just touches me in all the right places
Wouldn't that be awesome! The boys of 4WD 24/7 are legends! If you ever decide to make the switch, we're sure the Grenadier will provide you with plenty of thrills and memorable experiences. Happy off-roading, whatever vehicle you choose!
It's not a snorkel at all and not meant to keep water out. It's a desert air intake meant to reduce the amount of dust coming in.
Thank you for the clarification! It's essential to note that not all raised air intakes, often referred to as snorkels, are designed solely for water fording purposes. Some, like desert air intakes, are indeed intended to reduce the amount of dust and debris drawn into the engine, particularly in off-road and dusty environments. These systems can help maintain engine performance and longevity by providing cleaner air to the engine. Thanks for highlighting this distinction!
Great video, Ruben. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, owner of Ineos and the man who started the Grenadier, in the English pub called the Grenadier, was taken to court by Land Rover for intellectual property (IP) infringement (Copying the shape...somewhat of the Defender). Sir Jim won the court case simply because Land Rover never registered any IP, and Ineos were allowed to keep their design.
He now owns Manchester United
Thanks for the insight! It's fascinating to hear about the legal battle between Ineos and Land Rover over the design of the Grenadier. Intellectual property issues can be complex, and it's interesting that the outcome was influenced by Land Rover's failure to register their IP. It just goes to show the importance of protecting intellectual property rights in the automotive industry. It seems like Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos came out on top in this particular case. Thanks for sharing this tidbit of information!
Err Ruben, vehicles that use diesel exhaust fluid have a system called SCR , selective catalytic reduction system , they still have a diesel particulate filter.
Correct
Thanks for the clarification!
Great addition to your arsenal. Looking forward to the DMW take on the capabilities and weakness of the vehicle. Cheers
looking forward to seeing the build on this and what it can be turned into.
Just a note on the turbos, they are in a compound configuration, as opposed to twins.
Congratulations Reuben 🎉
Excited for what you guys have planned. Been looking at these for a few months now. It will be interesting what you do to it. Question. What brand of watch do you wear? Cheers all. Keep up the good work.
Looking forward to seeing what the 4x4 24/7 boys think of it. Great video by the way.
Awesome as always. Thanks for sharing and taking us along
Cheers for watching :)
Hey mate I think it's actually got dpf's and add blue working together.
Yep, your correct, the reason the steering is like that, is so you don’t break bones or pull anything when your off-roading
Cannot wait to see what you do with it and how is it off road.
Looking forward to the build .
The bike horn is an addition that stems from Ineos' large sponsorship stakes in european cycle races such as the Tour de France
Great review, I’ve got one and love it, just to let you know, it’s not a snorkel it’s an air filter so the engine doesn’t suck in low level dust or sand. Awesome colour
It’s a raised air intake
Thanks! It's fantastic to hear that you're enjoying your vehicle and that you appreciate its features. The color does look pretty awesome too! Enjoy your adventures with your vehicle, and thanks for sharing your experience!
Have one in England, it’s awesome, but can’t wait to see you guys take it on some extreme wheeling
Great review please plenty of hard off-road content to compare with the other vehicles!
Just signed my contract today for delivery in March! 🙌
Love your work Ruben
Finally a good rundown on these things…Ps get ya ears out, I’ll trust a man who doesn’t drink more than a bloke who tucks his ears in a hat lol
Haha I came to the comments for this
Rube’s we want you to do a full trip across Simpson, down and the coast track from east to west to WA then up the CSR - do not forget to take a recovery vehicle as you will not get a mechanic to be able to fix it IF anything goes wrong - what could go wrong with a BMW drivetrain ✅😂 Looking forward to some great vids mate!
@@tonyf7997another clown with no idea. That BMW drive train is very reliable and well proven. And in this configuration so under stressed it's highly unlikely to have any issues. As for the rest of the driveline. It's bulkier and twice the size of your shitty landcruiser.
Tucked ears are better than yoda ears. Hats are one size fits all these days if they still had small medium and large old Ruben wouldn't be in this predicament id imagine.
@@mikek2258 mate, zero sympathy lol the bloke own his own merch line, he is choosing to tuck, mate merch a bigger size if ya havin dramas! lol
Love the Subaru Brat! Brings back memories of the first times I went off road!
This seems to be a proper built 4wd it will be good to see this on the tracks had a quick look on the Web site and price wise its comparable to a land cruiser which surprised me
Cant wait to see this thing in action!
Colour me jealous! I’ve watched these things being developed and advertised for years! Great to have the full rundown! Cheers! 👌
Cheers for watching! We have a lot more planned for this car. :)
@@dmw4x4 But not breaking though riiiight? 😁😉
sick rig mate. oi is that a brumby in the background. you should do that up mate!
Can't wait for the cut and extension
Reuben , very good choice (Trialmaster). The wading depth is 800mm ; measure the height and see where that lies in relation to the underseat electrics (which are not in a sealed plastic tub). Also note the max wading duration is 20 minutes and max wading speed 5km/hr. It's in the owner's manual. Also if you join the international Grenadier Forum you will find all your answers. btw the Beef Wellington at the Grenadier pub in London was the best one I've ever had. A long way from Tassy , but worth the effort visiting the birthplace of the idea (Jim owns the pub now ; it is his watering hole down the road from Ineos' London HQ) P.S. the factory sliders support 2000kg from below (can jack entire side off these) , steps rated 300kg , above load only
Definitely some misinformation here especially re- wading time etc. Got to love his enthusiasm though 👊
The light in the "snorkel" it may be a raised air intake like the factory Toyota ones as they are like 4 bits just clipped together so it may not be 100% watertight like a safari snorkel
Yup, it's always been marketed as a raised air intake not a snorkel. People don't listen and call it a snorkel and then blame Ineos for the hole in it
I do appreciate the level of detail and effort that's gone into this car, where this vehicle seems to let down is the price. I own my own business and earn pretty good money, more than the average person - however, I can't bring myself to think about paying $120k for a 4wd. They really need to release a stripped back version.
particularly when youve got manual seat adjustments for that money!
Exactly, a 200 series a way better vehicle for that sort of coin.
For 150k you can get a fully loaded variant with all the bells and whistles. And trust me once you sit in it and see it person especially the fully loaded. You will say its worth it. 170k fully loaded gr spirt vs 150k fully loaded grenadier.
@@kallenstandish7944grow some balls it's a lever to adjust a seat,!! Oh😮the effort it's all to much.
@@stephenhankey688 okay keyboard warrior you buy your overpriced garbage lol if youre spending luxury money you ought to get some fkn bells and whistles!!
when it comes to exhausts system I'd prefer a DPF over the SCR ad blue system, on trucks especially the adblue system has so many more failure points than a DPF, a properly used engine fitted with a DPF will perform well without the need to fill up with adblue. especially in a 4X4 off road scenario.
Adblue has nothing to do with the DPF, they work to do completely different things. I’d find highly unlikely it doesn’t have a DPF. Can’t find anything to say either way
Adblue absolutely has everything to do with diesel particulate filter , Adblue is injected up stream of the DPF to assist the regen process Been living with it in heavy transport for years
@@dgs0011 do some research
Sadly, he has just show he doesn’t REALLY know his stuff… as blue and the dpf are two completely different things!! The Grenadier certainly DOES have a DPF and in most countries it is not permitted to remove it (don’t know about AUS though)
Every time my Cummins X15 does a regen it’s because the adblue is being injected into the dpf . That would suggest they work together. It’s not added before combustion , it’s added after the turbo dump pipe before the dpf . Maybe an expert can chime in They are indeed two separate things working together
@@dgs0011 like I said. Do some research. It’s not for the DPF
The running gear isn't made by Mercedes. Axles are by Italian company Carraro. The ladder frame chassis designed by Magna Steyr from Austria. Motor by BMW and trans by ZF, as you said. Ineos designed their own transfer case and prop shafts. The Grenadier is built in a factory in France, that used to be owned by Mercedes. This factory also produces the Smart mini-car.
Made in France? I’d rather by cars made in China
@@espkh1549 Look at TANK 300 or 500 then. The 300 SUV is with a 2.0 turbo petrol engine.... and I thing it`s lack of torque in that car.... but time will tell.
@@espkh1549Don't be ridiculous
@@rvarsigfusson6163 well you can’t beat the price. It’s an off roader , I’m gonna drive it for a few years then sell it. Also most Chinese dealerships have top notch customer service, some work 7 days a week
@@bertplank8011 tell that to our PM who just agreed to bring more Chinese brands here. I just sold two 7M houses to a Chinese dude, my commission tells me to get closer with Chinese folks.
Hey Reuben, great video. I wondered what the Grenadier was like, would like to see you try some of these new Chinese 4x4s that are coming out.
Does have a DPF AdBlue doesn’t replace DPF
Can't wait for this build
Cool car. Needs the dmw rig build.
u got me lamao out here in jamaica with your snorkel joke that was so funny love yr video great job kooool
Ive never heard of this car but dam those specs are awesome!
Omg the brumby in the background!! How good ahaha
yeah mate, thats what i was thinkin. 🤘
US version has the e-brake handle next to the driver seat so no need to reach across the center console.
You can pull the footrest out in the driver footwell. Its smaller underneath
The exhaust runs under there. If it is double skinned and the top skin is removed, you can bet that the remaining one will get very hot.
Can't be that bad with a big of extra lining applied@@hedydd2
From when I first read about it I wanted one. I have been told there is no after market fuel tank and no where to fit one.
The E-Brake is on the left side for the vehicle sold with the steering wheel on the left side.
Damn I like the battery in the back. So that means you don't get heat from the engine. So will make running lithium batter happy 😮😮😮
Your Subaru Brat caught my eye here in the UK. Sadly most of them have rusted away here...😢
How long before we see the results of the Ruben’s rev break it,because you do have the touch.
Self-centering of the steering wheel is just not working as good as in normal cars, because the steering damper in the Grenadier is extremely hard, it is adjusted for the hardest off-road drive situations.... love it or change it! 😏 I will test a new steering damper soon...
Can we get a video of the runing gear and how strong it all is
Best thing in that shed is the cool Subaru Brumby ❤
Test drive one in Cairns last week and boy they're pretty impressive check that steering gets you a little on the bitumen but off-road it would be great
What did you like about the Ineos? They are a different car, but have a lot of upsides.
@@dmw4x4 I'm impressed with all the underbody protection that comes as standard on all models and the winching setup is brilliant as well. I would like to see the KMs per hour in front of the wheel instead of in the centre but that just my thoughts
Just love these!!
Rueben, doesn’t seem to be anyone interested supporting this vehicle with after market gear, bullbar, baseplates, main thing is GVM upgrade to 4000kg, increase GCM to 7500 would be great, also if you are supporting these have a look at quartermaster. Very interested in this vehicle as tourer/tow vehicle. That engine/gearbox is way under rated in output, it’s also very reliable so far. It’s not cheap but may give Landcruiser run for its money if you can get after market items.
Nice rig. I have seen some reviews of this car that were a little negative tho. It looks the goods. I'm thinkin' you are going to do a lift and add some 37's and all the usual "Ruben" stuff? As for the steering being a bit wooley...it may be electric power steering? That BMW donk is the shit too, great engine! Now, just paint it up to pair with your daughters zook!! Would be great to see them on the track together! I hope the wiring is better than the old range rover days!! Lot's of great features there though, well thought out. BUT......I think i'll stick with my ol trusty 2014 Dmax as I don't have 110 large to pay for one 😞
They have an old school power assisted steering box. I’m not sure about the return to centre, but the steering felt fine when I test drove one yesterday. Pretty similar feel to an old Defender, but better.
looks impressive
Great review and yep ears out.
AdBlue is only applicable to diesel engines and is an emissions reduction technology used with the existing DPF technology. Diesel cars fitted with Particulate Filters, may not necessarily feature an AdBlue tank. However, cars with an AdBlue tank always feature a Diesel Particulate Filter
I could be wrong, but I dont think the Jeep uses clutches in the transfer case centre diff for 4H or 4L. I thought it only uses clutch packs for 4Auto?
Most are not but there is a few in Jeeps, the Quadra Drive system are I believe. (Never say Never) The standard ones are chain drive "231,241, and I'm not sure of the JK, JL, and JT transfer cases designated name. My JT doesn't have clutch packs, I believe there is versions that do in JT, JL and JLU's
Hey Rubs are you going to look at a gmv & game upgrade for it
i know most of vehicles that run adblue go into limp mode if adblue runs out, wondering if that’s the case with the ineos anyone know?
could you do rock sliders and then have a fold down step that attaches to the bottom mounts on the exterior door track and sits on top of the sliders possibly, to have the best of both worlds? rock sliders and access to roof rack...
Following!!
🙂 great video, thanks, cheers 👍👍👍🤙
Steering is recirculating ball system.Reason it doesnt self centre but there will be no shock feedback when off-road and very robust system. A compromise but an awesome one imo. Also, if you design a smick bash plate from engine to gearbox I will be first in line. Ineos had a great one but the country in which it was manufactured is busy fighting a war atm. Cool vid btw - no BS 🤘🏻
Despite the recirculating ball steering the engineers should have built in enough positive caster angle to return the front wheels to center. Something doesn’t sound right.
If you want return to centre just get a return to centre steering damper. I thought about it briefly for my Perentie, but I just prefer it without.
A lot of BS imo. There are several facts that he states that are completely wrong.
Considering their choice of archaic front axle design they had no choice other than to equip it with a recirculating ball steering box like a 1960’s farm tractor. Modern electric rack and pinion steering on independent front suspension vehicles have very sporty on road steering, not too many turns lock to lock, moderate self centring and almost zero kick back or shimmy to the steering wheel even on the most potholed hard surfaces. You can argue about whether the front axle type is superior of not but there is no argument whatsoever about the electric power assisted steering systems being far superior and indeed less wear prone and the independent suspension not prone to death wobbles at speed on rough stuff curves. It will be interesting to see whether Grenadier suffers from uneven tyre wear, because Cararro axles on tractors [basically the same design] are often guilty of having some geometrical problems that cause this.
@@hedydd2 I think the choice of beam axle and steering box is a compromise for improved off road ability. And I think a solid axle is more robust when hitting solid objects, for example, like tree stumps and rocks in long grass and the like. It happens to me regularly enough on our property to be worthy of consideration. Plus there are plenty of rack and pinion IFS SUVs on the market already, the majority even. But yourself a Hilux or a new Discofender if you don’t want the Grenadier setup.
Do something with the subi in the background. Had one with winch and 2 inch lift.
I want one of these! 🔥🤘
That wading button, is also meant to turn of the engine fan as well.
Correct, plus front/rear parking sensors to stop them beeping. No other reviews I've seen discuss cabin pressuring but Ruben may have stumbled on a great feature others haven't.
very impressive!
Good to see an Aussie point of view for this
Thank you!
This is hopefully gonna be good..
@7:44 ; it does have a DPF BTW. And does burn off the residue like regular DPFs. AdBlue is just an added measure of pollution-control. With the DPF, ad blue, and added complexities of their control-electronics, makes you wonder if the B58 Petrol may be the more "bush-proof" engine. The B58 already having a bulletproof reputation being built up in the tuner community. All this from a Diesel-advocate BTW.
Thanks for sharing @dihanamaratunga3321
There good mate, got invited to goodwood to test drive one
New owner. I would like to purchase the side steps. I cannot find them. Do you have a link for where I could purchase them? 9:55
Ad blue will still have a dpf yeah?
They do move the handbrake on left hand drive.
Hey Ruben, silly question as I don't know, caravans just changed the regulations for having lithuim batterys in vans and have to be sealed and vented, but you showed your batterys under the rear seat, I thought they of had them in a sealed box of somesorts
The aux battery standard in the Triamaster is an EFB Moll battery. Not lithium . It's a backup for the starter battery.
@@paultucker4923 Yes it is a conventional battery but its primary use is for independent use for auxiliary functions such as winches or fridges so that they do not discharge the primary battery.
Ineos have disabled the consumer output terminal of the Ctek unit; it does not seem to be setup as most of us would like. You can read more on the Grenadier Forum. Nobody at this stage understands quite why it has been setup the way it has. Until we get official info from IA...
Ruben I’m 2 m tall and 130 kg will I fit ? 0:00 shoulders jammed against window in defender and 79 series no problems for me in my 105 and 200!series can you put a tall mate in the gren please on a future ep - cheers Phil.a
I wasn’t thinking about if someone 6’6” could fit but I’m 5’10” and it’s more roomy all round than my dad’s 2009 Defender when we test drove one yesterday.
Handbrake is to the left on lhd grenadiers :)
Yes handbrake is on the other side for LHD
This is a Euro 6 diesel engine, so it has both DPF and Adblu.
HOS .. rrp ? Serving prices ?
Who presses the panels? are they basic Land Rover bodies?
Hopefully they do a special one down the line with a m power lump
Wouldn't that be epic!
I'm 5'4" and couldn't get in and out without steps or rock sliders.😂 over here in the UK 🇬🇧 they are classes as commercial, so limited top speeds the same as wagons. I believe they are looking into this.
But no VAT claim, right? The payload is below 1000kg.
I can do 85 mph in mine no problem, absolutely love it
No VAT if you are VAT registered, but most of us aren't, and so pay it😢. As for the 85mph, I didn't say I wouldn't go fast, but legally, you do 10mph less than the speed limit. Be careful of speed cameras and smart Motorways👍
Side Steps. Where can I get them?
Is that snapback huge or is his head small?
Saw this at a car show about 2 weeks ago. Very impressive. You could have 2 for the price of a G Wagon.
Getting two? ;)
are you sure there is no DPF? i read before it was supposed to have DPF, also AdBlue only reduces Nitrogen Oxides, NOx [mg/km]. not particulate mass. and on Ineos specs it says Diesel particulate mass is 2 times less than of petrol engine. cant see it achieved with just adblue
It has a DPF he clearly knows fuck all
I'm surprised that you won't be making your own rock sliders that also have built in steps that also remove the problem of getting caught up on the rocks
We did. :)
I saw one in Leichhardt today & thought what the hell is this, then all of a sudden your review pops up. Mind blown & paranoia sets in my phone is listening to me 😮
what was the price?
I was under the impression that the Ad-Blue system is an addition to the already mandated DPF system. So the Ineos definitely does not have a dpf? Only the Ad-Blue system? European forums says otherwise unless Australian versions are different.
It definitely has a DPF, and a GPF in the petrol units in UK at least. Not sure if the Aussie petrols have a GPF.
Why would you have a DPF if it is Petrol🤔 ????
@@christurner68 Its called a PPF fron memory, similar function as a dpf.
@@christurner68 DPF stands for Diesel Particulate Filter. GPF stands for Gasoline Particulate Filter. The GDF is mostly fitted to direct injection gasoline engines but may be required on some others these days to meet current emission regulations.
I can't see myself getting one. I'm 6'7" seeing you sitting in it and you call yourself short. I physically couldn't drive a real defender as they're to small. It'll be interesting to see reviews after a year or two of use in Australia.
Twin turbo in a Defender replacement?
The snorkel isn’t, they call it a raised air intake. Same as defender 110 urban . No good in water
The wading limit is 800mm, the same as a Defender and Ford Ranger. The raised air intake does not alter the wading depth limit, which is much lower down than depicted in the video.
It’s a very good pub and is renowned for bloody Mary’s or used to be. Well worth a visit and terribly traditional.
What's with the brumby in the background ? I hope it's yours ?
i can't understand the hate for the ineos from journo's. it seems to be a better defender in most ways which is what it said it was on the box. you have people saying it should have been ifs, but duh it exists because the new defender was ifs/irs. people saying you can't fit bigger than 33's it's not a good rockcrawler well duh it's a touring vehicle. i'm not in the market for one, but i think they did an excellent job for the first vehicle and it should be a great tourer. and considering the prototype was built on a jeep chassis and running gear they started in exactly the same place land rover did in 1948.
It’s definitely the true Defender descendant. The driving feel, feedback and handling is basically the same but a much better version.
Awesome.
No mention of fuel capacity or suspension… Please include in next video review and possible options for increasing fuel capacity
The Grenadier has a very low cargo weight capacity from a legal perspective. Practical option for increased fuel capacity is limited to jerrycans. There’s no room underneath for an auxiliary tank partly because it has a massive silencer running across the back, in front of the rear crossmember.
@@hedydd2 Yea and this is the only place I can see to install a aux/larger tank. Move the muffler elsewhere(smaller in size). Would be expensive though
@@robmacca67 Contrast that design with that of the new Ford Ranger, which admittedly has a longer wheelbase than Grenadier, but which, if the spare wheel is relocated to the ample rear deck or roof rack , has a great big void behind the back axle ripe for exploitation. The exhaust just loops over the axle and ends as a plain pipe angling down with no complications, waste space or excessive weight. The choice of a 205hp four cylinder engine also saves weight and allows a near 1200kg payload compare to just over half that for Grenadier. Adding another 80litre auxiliary tank to Grenadier, should room be found, would detract another 80 to 100kgs from its already small payload. This even applies to the Quartermaster pickup. Ignore load limits of course, and anything is possible.
The sorkel is an extra air filter not a water snorkel
