Horseshoeing Gala

The mud is here and the horses seem to love rolling in it!
This is Gala, he's now 23 so getting on a bit. He doesn't do much so only has front shoes on. He has sensitive feet so you will notice that I quickly tack one on so he doesn't have to stand barefoot on the concrete for too long.
Podcast farrierfocuspodcast.libsyn.co...
PLEASE READ THE FAQ's BEFORE POSTING!!
1: Hot shoeing ensures a good fit.
2: No, it doesn't hurt the horse if it's shod correctly by a qualified registered person.
3: The horse is calm because it has been trained from birth to know there is nothing to fear.
4: The majority of horses these days are worked either under saddle or in harness and on hard man made surfaces, shoes protect the feet from wearing down too much and can add grip via studs in the shoes for competition animals.
5: Feral horses have particularly hard feet and manage them naturally by foraging.
6: The average horse needs re-shoeing every 6-8 weeks
7: The bit I am nailing to has no nerves and is made of Keratin, the same as your finger nails and hair.
8: The burning smells just like burning hair.

  • Everyone keeps asking if this hurts the horse, TRUST ME the horse will let you know if it is experiencing any pain or discomfort. No horse would be standing there like nothing if this actually hurt

  • Everyone who’s asking if it hurts, no, it doesn’t. Their hooves are made of the same stuff our hair, fingernails and toenails are made of. It’s called Keratin. So, if you’ve ever been hit on the nail, it hurts right? That’s not the nail. It’s the nerves underneath. So, the horses don’t feel it at all since it’s so much “nail” there and the nerves are practically non-existent. The frog (triangular part on the hoof) is the most sensitive part of the hoof and may hurt a little if a farrier goes too rough on the hoof.

  • This doesn't hurt the horse. Horse's hoof is very resistant and they don't have any neural connection or nerves where u do the shoeing, so they don't feel a thing. This is very important to the horse, otherwise, his steps may not be balanced and this can cause serious problems to the horse health, its body and even compromise his column. Which a would make the animal suffer and cause a lot of trouble to the owner. Now takes a lot of resources to keep up a horse, would u think the owner would rly want that happening? There is no one more concern about a particular horse's health than its owner. Do not worry about it.

  • *PLEASE READ // PLEASE READ* Dissapoints me to see this video with a 12/1 dislike ratio purely because so many people can't be bothered to read the description or have a lack of basic knowledge before disliking. What you see in this video is much like manicuring human nails but on a very different scale. It obviously requires more manpower and far more training, aswell as a wide range of tools, but what you are seeing here is literally a *MUST DO* for all horses/ponies if the owners don't want them to wear away their own hooves and practically hurt themselves on the yard. Horse hooves are made from Keratin, the same stuff as our Nails or Hair is made from. This Keratin contains no nerve endings and horses even enjoy/appreciate this in some cases. *STOP FRETTING,* because this is helping Gala keep his hooves in a comfortable and presentable condition. 16 years of age and have owned many horses/ponies since I was 4, been around them since literal birth. Family live in a little English suburban town right beside the countryside, by the way. Love the animals, one of the best anyone could ever work with. :)

  • The shoe of the horse grows and sheds like a nail would. When we as humans put the shoe on it's to help them walk on our hard man made surfaces. Not soft rassy plains like where they are naturally. But thier nails still keep growing. So that's why you need to change and file around the horseshoes. It's like having acrylics to help protect your nails but actually way less invasive because horses have incredibly thick nails and ours are not as thick also no chemicals haha. Horses feet also spread out as they get older and they tend to get rot and such in the feet. The shoes helps there feet not spread as much and it helps keep rot away and it helps people to check and groom the feet more often. It actully extends the horses lives if done properly and consistently. Nothing kills a horse faster than a bad foot or leg. You have to shoot lame horses because they are built to have 4 strong legs and feet to stand on. Without one the are completely crippled and can't move. So it's more humane to shoot then to let them keep living stuck on one place. Horses will mourn themselfs to death over stress like that. Anyway they are good for them. I personally think horses like it when you put them on. Sometimes they lean into it becuase they like you supporting their weight for them and giving there legs a break lol. Also they cannot feel it at all becuase their nails are so thick. It's like how you get your nails or hair cut.

    • @@lorrayne8535 There's is technique involved. You can most definitely mess up a horses foot if you dont know what your doing. There are parts to avoid like the little black v hes moving around. That's actually tissue near there. But for the hammering no. It doesn't hurt. It might uncomfortable. And I stress MIGHT. It's different from animal to animal. Like some people can handle having those little rings put in a small hole in their nails and not think it feels weird but I think it feels weird lol. So a horse might think the feeling is strange and only because of that might get antsy. But nothing akin to pain or hurt. Only preference. Some animals dont mind stuff some others do. It's more gotta do with the temperment of the animal. Would I put a shoe on a wild horse. No. But would I put a shoe on a horse that's already been broken and raised with people. Yes. Horses are very smart and intuitive. They usually know if you mean well and are doing something good for them. I understand it makes people uncomfortable to watch though. But it really is like the biggest thickest nail. It will only hurt if you hit near tissue this guy did a good job and did not. He treated this horse really nice. If you see he almost never pulls the horses foot to him. The horse just gives him his foot. This horse isn't at all uncomfortable. If you wanna see something weird though look up how you take care of horses teeth. You have to put huge clippers in there mouths and files and rasps. You have to cut and file their teeth. Lol
