Babcock may have been abrasive, but he clearly recognized the problems we now see in Mitch Marner. He understood that Marner approached hockey with a carefree attitude reminiscent of playing in a peewee league, and he attempted coaching techniques to instill a more disciplined approach from a young age. While Babcock's methods were flawed, his insight back then revealed Marner's shortcomings when it came to playoff intensity and determination. Bottom line, men win cups. The Leafs don't enough of them.
Mitch was given a contract that he did not earn. That is on Shanny and Shaggy.
With Babcock's record, you would think the Leafs management would pick his side of that debacle. They chose Mitch. Absolute proof that MLSE's goal is not to win championships but to earn profit. They were expecting that Mitch would attract a lot of fans.

Love your honesty Rosie! I appreciate that. I’ve been a Leafs fan for ages and Marner fan since he came to us. But I’ve gotten to the point that I can’t justify his attitude and performance during the playoffs. And it’s not just him. Why can other teams bring it to a new level for the playoffs when ours actually regresses? It’s so embarrassing and pathetic.

I think his name is Tavares. He won't be mistaken for a Mark Messier, or even a Brad Marchand. No Heart, no character.
It’s not Mariner’s fault, he’s who he is. It’s management’s fault for keeping him and this core together for so long. Time to fire Shanahan and break up this core.
I'm not loving on Babs but he was quite public about wanting The Leafs to pick Hanifin over Marner.
Drafting Marner over Hanafin was the right move. Failing to build a big strong team that can compete in the playoffs was the mistake. Chicago built around Toews and Kane (a no hit, pure offensive winger) and won Cups. Shannahan has to go.
Matthews had 17 goals against true playoff teams, 9 goals against wild card teams and 43 goals against non-playoff teams. He feasts against the scruff of the league during the regular season but he can't do it against the real teams in real hockey. Leafs are pretenders all the way.
Hopefully, Treliving has now seen enough to know what most of us knew for years...and that is, this core has no heart, won't battle and will give up when it gets hard. Please blow this non-playoff team up.. groundhog day needs to end!

A tale of two captains: Brad Marchand cranks it up to 11 when the playoffs start and becomes as clutch as David Ortiz. Meanwhile, John Tavares disappears and makes Toronto wonder why he wears the captains C.

Could JT ever win a big faceoff. Rielly is the worse #1 d-man in the playoffs. Rielly doesn't hit, doesn't play the PK, can't clear the front of the net, has the lowest hockey IQ of any leafs d-man, doesn't carry the puck into the o-zone, has the shot of a grade 5 girl with a broken arm. Any d-man that can do an outlet pass to that forward group can put up similar or better numbers than Rielly.

As a Bruins fan we deal with watching a superstar like Pastrnak constantly try to enter the zone alone and try to finesse his way through 3 players instead of letting the play develop and pass the puck. It's playoff hockey and the toughest teams win. The Leafs came out great adding Bertuzzi, Domi & Reeves to punch teams in the mouth. Notice that the Leafs turned it on when Matthews went out? Too many finesse type goal scoring premadonna's up front. The Bruins have only 1 with Pastrnak and the Panthers have 1 in Barker. After that performance I'd be asking if maybe Matthews is a huge problem for the Leafs in the playoffs? As long as he's there quitting with a tummy ache you will all lose your minds for the rest of his contract.
Mathews will score 60 next season and rest in the playoffs again
They should bench these four core players: Mathew, Marner, Nylander and Riley. During the regular season, when the team did not have some of these players, they always won, when these players were back, they started losing 😂

Chara was bullied and forced to become a fighter because of his size. No one expected him to be anything other than a stupid goon. He was given the C because he pushed himself to be more than that, he fought to create a locker room where everyone felt welcomed and mattered. There are no rookies in the Bruins locker room, only first year team mates. Bergeron was drafted in the second round and had to fight to fight through concussions. He changed fought hard to be a defensive menace and realized the importance of two-way play. He was the face of a franchise for years and took discounts to keep the team in playoff contention. He told management no when they wanted to bring in a guy who skill wise was really good, but is an asshole and bullies disabled people. He played through a punctured lung and broken rib. Marchand was drafted in the second round and because of his size had to make a name for himself being a pest. He had to fight and earnchis reputation as a skilled winger. He adapted his game to change and he has had to struggle for every ounce of respect given to him by the NHL and fans. He also is the face of NHL is For Everyone, and regular speaks out to help people who are less privileged than himself despite the hate it gets him from bigots. Tavares was a first overall pick who strung his previous team along and hamstrung them because he wouldn't tell them his plans. He actively tried to sink the team he was a captain of and he bragged about it with a picture of him in pajamas. He was gifted the C his first day in Toronto because he is John Tavares. It obviously takes an immense amount of skill and dedication to be a number one overall pick and be the face of multiple franchises. But attitude, personality, and character is what teams rally behind, not skill. You look at the Bruins and they say regularly that they love each other and want to fight for each other. Imagine if you had the skill of the Leafs and a captain that could actually rally them together like Chara, Bergeron, or Marchand.
You can still be a 1st overall pick and have that dog in you. Crosby, Ovechkin, Stamkos and Kane all showed up during the playoffs while they were in their primes. Mackinnon and McDavid go beast-mode in the playoffs and battle their asses off. I feel like if Tavares would have stayed in Long Island and been apart of those conference finals teams, people would look at him a lot more favourably. I do believe that he’s better than his time with the Leafs. He’s just not the right captain to lead this group.
