  • How does Shanahan survive? This all goes back to Kyle Dubas, who still doesn't get enough blame for tying up the money in 4 forwards and being unable to build around them. He than left for Pittsburgh for more power and for just as much because he couldn't fix his own mess in Toronto. And SHANAHAN approved it ALL!!!!!!!!

You don't add even MORE instability to the situation. If same stuff next year, different story. But you simply cannot change ownership, presidency, GM, coach in the span of two seasons and expect to have a coherent plan. Its basically admitting to a crapshoot. (Granted, some Leafs fans might say "hey go for it", and I sympathize!)

    • Sheldon Keefe *WOULD NOT* have had an NHL coaching job without Brendan Shanahan. Knowledgeable fans know that the buck stops at Shanahan, and they know it was he that hired Babcock, installed Dubas as GM, and greenlighted all those big salaries for the core 4. He did things ass-backwards, but now he reports directly to Keith Pelley, rather than the Board, and it will be Pelley who will challenge the hockey decisions going forward that were unchallenged (IMO) in the past. I suppose that's one good thing.

      @jamesanthony5681@jamesanthony568113 күн бұрын
    • @@jamesanthony5681 Agree with you on everything, but I think Keefe owes his job to Dubas, not Shanahan. Shanny hired both Babcock and Dubas, which was a mistake regardless of what you think of either man. A young, confident stats-heavy GM isn't going to get along with an old school, blood and guts "work hard and make plays" type of coach. FWIW, I think both Babcock and Dubas are overrated to an obscene degree. As is analytics, but thats another convo! Between the two, if Shanahan could only hire one and had to pick? Easy. Babcock.

    • IMO there's a man who could do the job as head coach in Toronto. Bob Hartley. He knows how to handle contender teams and turn them into winners. He knows how to bring the best out of skilled players. He won the Cup, won championships in Switzerland and in the KHL. I remember he was fired from Calgary because they wanted to reconstruct but he turned the team upside down, made then-rookies Gaudreau and Monahan erupt into superstars and made the Flames go to the second round against all expectations. I think Hartley would be willing for one more chance at the Cup. The Leafs need a veteran head coach to straighten up those millionaire babies. The good thing with Hartley is that he is the opposite of Babcock, he's a talkative coach with a positive attitude. It would work with them IMO.

When Domi outplayed Matthews in the playoffs - why did Matthews play at Centre ice in game 7. Likely Matthews is an elite winger - but Matthews is a playoff disappointment at centre ice. Mitch and other Core 4 players need some leadership coaching from the new coach. The Leaf Followers want to hear Mitch owning his back checking OT screw ups, and telling Leaf Fans he wants to play his heart and soul in the next 8 years - that is why he wants to be a Leaf. But Mitch came across he just plays because he feels he is a God in Toronto. Mitch needs to become a better man to become a better Leaf. 😀

He looked bad watching from the blue line just coasting - while the Bruins won the series. And then Mitch didn’t address his screw up immediately at games end. The pass was just too fast for Morgan and Sammy to play - also too dangerous to touch (just don’t deflect it into the net). Only Mitch as back checking could match the speed of the rush. Mitch did have inside position to even just eliminate the rush from cutting in front of the net and scoring. My wish is someone helps Mitch mature. That is more important than being an $11 Million Leaf forward. 😀

  • Great show guys as always. Nick, I agree with you. Shanahan needs to go. He has been at the helm for this whole experiment, and it has failed miserably! You don't spend half your cap on four pretty boy forwards who are not willing to muck it up in the nasty areas. None of our core four ever get their hands dirty. Hell, I even watched Auston Matthews get rag-dolled by somebody and he didn't even push back. Generally, we just get physically beaten out of the playoffs. I mean that literally. The other teams hammer us relentlessly and we are too soft to push back, so we lose. We need a complete culture shift throughout the MSLE organization. We coach our teams to be pussies. We coach them to not get penalties. We seem to coach them to be complacent. What the flying f***! Here's one example. We played Boston for seven games and I'm sure there were a few hits by the Maple Leafs that were pretty good. I can't remember any of them. Do you know what I can remember? The first game of the Florida/Boston series where Brad Marchand nailed Matthew Tkachuk with an epic, open-ice hit. The Toronto Maple Leafs are in serious need of the killer instinct, with a coach and players who buy into it 150%. We're not going to win a Stanley cup again until we have it. #SoftLeafs

If not himself, then he has naught To say the things he truly feels And not the words of one who kneels The record shows I took the blows And did it my way … Yes, it was my way

You fired him because he hurt Marner's fee-fees over a botched office demo. Say what you will about Babcock, but I think that event sent a message to this team, and the wrong one: the coach must make players comfortable or lose his job. Don't feel bad, though, Leafs fans, his next team got rid of him because he.... are you sitting down? Are your kids out of the room? HE ASKED A PLAYER TO SEE HIS PHONE! Look, I'm not a Babcock stan - we had him in Detroit and he was a PRICK, but he got results. And I still say the coaching fate of Mike Babcock is one of the most puzzling things about the hockey internet over the past few years. The guy pisses a few people off, doesn't start a few legends on milestone nights, and doesn't give a bunch of goons ice time...... and? Suddenly every hockey youtuber is treating the guy like he belonged on the side of a milk carton and was some sort of creeper. Oh wait, I forgot his most egregious sin. Murder someone? If only it were that minor. HE. HURT. JOHAN. FRANZEN'S. FEELINGS.

    • @@madelyns9908 I totally agree with you that coaching may not be the problem with the Leafs. 100% . As far as Babcock goes, his job isn't to be a decent human being. His job is to win games. Exactly what he said about the Modano and Spezza issues, and he was spot on correct. I think we sometimes have different standards for people. Would we react the same way if Babcock's name was replaced with Tortorella? And I actually like Torts far more than Babs. As far as the phone thing goes with the Blue Jackets, it pretty much shattered their locker room, with a lot of leading players liking Babcock and looking forward to the season. All it took is one jackwagon to go to the brain trust Bisonnette to give him content to gripe about. Also, did anyone notice John Davidson visibly CRINGE at the presser when a reporter asked him about Babs resignation payout? Because it was easily FULL contract value, if not an NDA enhancement. Lawyers would be lining up for that one. "Looking at phones" is not firing for cause in any court on EARTH! hahahaha. I love Chicklets and the rest of the guys, but let's hope the days of former goon podcasts having influence on the current NHL will soon be over. Double-digit IQ has beens are funny and interesting, but influential? The horror.
