Making a wafer iron

Watch me make a wafer iron from scratch. It is used to make rolled wafers, rullrån, as we call them in Sweden. This utensil is traditionally made from cast iron, but I use a different technique... I hope you like it.
Merry Christmas everyone!
Wafer recipe:
100 g butter (melted)
1,5 dl sugar
1 tsp vanilla sugar
3 dl wheat flour
2 dl water

  • This waffle iron will last for ages and can be passed down through the generations! I have one that’s roughly 145 years old and it’s been used at least once a week since it’s been in the family.

    • It's not a waffle iron, it's like a Norwegian Krumkake iron. I imagine the Swedes have a different name for it. My mother made these for us every Christmas with a special cast iron mold. Rolled up on a small conical wood rolling pin while they are hot. Fill them with whipped cream (flavored with Baileys or Grand Marnier), cherry on top. Oh god they are good. My sister still makes them every year. Thanks for the outstanding video, Torbjorn.

    • @@silicon.alchemist Italians have something that looks the same called pizzelle, an anise flavored wafer cookie. I wonder if they all had one origin and were traded. The design match between the different irons is perfect.

  • Another great video! And now I’m hungry thanks for that! One small safety consideration, never use your hand to remove the long stringy award from the lathe, especially while the chuck is spinning, forge up a hook for pulling them away in case they get caught by the chuck, they could take your fingers or at the very least leave you with a nasty cut. Sorry about the rant, I hope you and your family have a safe and happy holiday!

  • This is splendid! I'm American, and part of my heritage is Norwegian. I have a traditional Norwegian utensil of this type, made by Jotul. My grandmother called the product krumkakke, and was rolled on a tapered roller instead of a straight one, so they would slip off the form easier. My recipe is similar to yours, but included eggs in the batter. As you say, the traditional utensil is made from cast iron. Mine has a separate ring, made to fit over a burner on a wood stove, but it works very well on my glass stove top. (I have an aluminum foil layer on the stove ring, to protect the glass stove top and it works very well) My iron is seasoned nicely and there is enough butter in the recipe that I do not have to oil the surfaces for each krumkakke I make. I can make and roll one every minute, when the temperature is right. Your skills are wonderful, and you have made a beautiful tool! Thank you for this video!

  • Remember watching my Bestemor make these when I was a boy. Of course, her iron wasn't nearly as fine or personalized as yours. Merry Christmas, Thunder Bear.🎄☃🎉

  • Forging and food in the same video….👍. Outstanding pattern, looks like something that would definitely make the wafers taste better, I was “drooling “ by the end of the video. Have a wonderful time with your family and friends, (and we can’t forget puss) this Christmas. Thanks for all the great videos you’ve given us this year, I look forward with enthusiasm for each new edition. Love to meet you one day. Regards from your friend Down Under.

    • Thanks Outback! Merry Christmas!! Have you managed to dress the palm tree yet? :) Seriously though... do you even have Christmas trees like we on the northern hemisphere?

    • @@torbjornahman Yep, plastic ones !😂🤣😜. Perhaps you could forge us a steel Christmas tree!! Seriously, as most Aussies are of British or European decent we follow all the traditional Christmas customs, Santa etc, but we have added a few new customs of our own. Barbecues, swimming, outside activities as there’s no snow. The old Southern Hemisphere, everything’s back the front down here you know 🤪.

    • Forgot to mention, everyone plays cricket in the backyard on Christmas Day, you know all about cricket don’t you? They play it in Sweden don’t they? When you come out and visit me I’ll teach you all about the wonderful game of cricket!!👌

    • @@torbjornahman Japp, kanonfin video.
