  • Those stabs are actually not bad stock, pretty surprising from such a basic design. All in all, I think these keyboards a bit expensive, but not necessarily criminally overpriced. I can see why people would be interested in these, but with the lack of customization offered from the custom switch design, meaning no switch swap or other keycaps, this is isn't a keyboard I'm interested in.

I'm still remembered how Logitech used to receive so much criticism and hatred for that switch's design (about how weak the keycap's stem to be easy broken and stuck inside the switch's stem). I can switch out most of the caps with my no longer working 'Deck Legend', which has higher quality double shot keycaps, if the strix caps begin to fade. I was able to put the cool skull and crossbones Deck 'esc' cap on to the Strix. Not sure I would buy a keyboard with switches that will not accept regular Cherry MX switches.

  • I thought I was limited in options with my Gateron Optical Blacks....these optical switches would really limit what you can do with them if you wanted to tinker...at least with mine I can swap them with other Gateron Opticals (there's like 5 of them in total?) or even get creative and create my own Frankenswitches (which I'm definitely thinking about) If I were super focused on gaming performance, I think the Wooting would be the clear choice in that area. Just a lot more you can do with their "analog" switches.

  • In fighting games where inputs on a specific key frame in a combo matter in order to properly animation cancel an attack or skill, lightning fast debounce like these switches "could" help out those people that play on keyboard specifically. Perhaps in the future we could see high-end fighting stick manufacturers incorporate optical switches like these in their line up too. I'M LOOKING AT YOU QANBA, RAZER

    @YurttheSilentChief1@YurttheSilentChief1 Жыл бұрын
    • Its nice to remove any source of lag, but I dont think this would make much of a difference. Cherry MX switches are rated for 5ms debounce time, so a well optimized keyboard doesnt got much delay at all. And even a good PC setup with a very fast monitor usually has 20ms of visual input lag or more, so you never get perfect reaction times either.

      @termitreter6545@termitreter6545 Жыл бұрын
    • @@termitreter6545 Big mistake here. Not only is bounce a source of latency, so is the polling rate, scan rate, good code on the mcu, etc. This all adds up to most keyboards not being 'ultra' suitable for a lot of competitive games. Razer and Wooting make good pcbs but they need that Moondrop dash treatment.

      @kmah324@kmah324 Жыл бұрын
    • @@kmah324 I dont see how that has anything to do with what I wrote? Were talking if the debounce rate is a big problem. If your polling/scan rate is terrible, then it will make problems with long debounce less relevant if anything.

      @termitreter6545@termitreter6545 Жыл бұрын
    • @@termitreter6545 well, no. A 5 ms bounce time is something you'd probably want to avoid in the first place and what I'm saying is having the other issues on top of that makes the overall situation worse. You can even make an easy to understand situation where you want a lower debounce time than 5 ms in music rythem games or in fighting games with tight execution windows (taunt jet upper with Bryan in Tekken 7 is one such real world example). If x action takes y number of frames of leeway, you want the input latency and it's S.D to be much smaller than the window of time allowed (eg much smaller than y) for the highest chance of success of executing the desired event. Saying that because the scanrate is poor therefore debounce is less of an issue is flawed because you still want to aim for the lowest input latency possible, not increase it for no reason.

      @kmah324@kmah324 Жыл бұрын
    • @@kmah324 Sure, its always best to have the lowest input lag possible, and its add up. Im not competitive, but im somewhat sensitive to lag too. Im just saying this one is a very small difference, and I dont think it will help in the way OP described it. Especially since some fighting games in the past had big issues with input lag for some reason. IIRC Street Fighter 4 had something like 100ms of lag on PS4, and SF5 still has a lot of delayed frames. Which seems strange for competitive games tbh.

      @termitreter6545@termitreter6545 Жыл бұрын
  • I really hope custom keyboard designers start encorporating more basic features like 1000hz refresh rate. It’s kinda annoying to have a 600dollar board that has 125hz and minor delays. Yeah it is barely noticeable but it’s such an easy fix idk why no one bothers

    @lucious8675@lucious8675 Жыл бұрын
  • Im a bit confused at the reaction times, they dont really line up with other tests ive seen. 260ms seems extremely high. Most game input-lag tests usually only have ~50ms of lag if not using stuff like Vsync. Furthermore, the debounce time of cherry's is rated around 5ms; and in reality it supposedly more like ~10-15ms in a lot of boards. Makes me wonder, do you use text processing that has a delay for some reason? Maybe some windows desktop thing?

I honestly would've gotten one of these if I could easily remap the keys xD Honestly the switches actually feels really stable and smooth, even the sound isn't that offensive either. I feel like if Romer-Gs were these then it would've been a lot more successful than it was.

  • Personally, I have the Strix Scope RX full size board and after lubing the optical switches, it is probably the most satisfying type feel board I have. The word that best describes this board is crispy. The switches are marketed as prelubed and after inspecting, they were very minimally lubed but they were already very smooth out of the box. The stabs aren't bad too and they were even better after lubing. I got the full-sized one for about $100 and I would say that it is worth every penny for all the features, the typing experience and RGB if you're into that. The features are actually useful, the larger ctrl key actually helps me (I do accidentally press the windows key occasionally when Im panicking in FPS games), and the RGB is much brighter than what you can get from even Razer. After going into the custom keyboard scene, I couldn't stop and I've sold all my big company keyboards except this one from ASUS alongside many other customs. It really is quite different, and I would recommend anyone in the scene to try them out if they can find one on display in a shop. The only downsides are the fixed cable and the proprietary keycaps. The extra $70 or so for the TKL Wireless just ain't worth it because theyre exactly the same.

  • The wooting switches with their dynamic actuation point, which means anywhere on the length of the travel of the switch, any shift between upwards or downwards motion turns the switch on and off, so you can never miss an actuation point, it reads your intent from all movements of your finger, not just the ones where you manage to cross an arbitrary threshold. No mechanical switch can ever do such a thing without being massively overengineered. Corsair or whoever going for gaming performance should just clone that wooting feature with optical, rather than trying to lower the pretravel distance of less mechanically/optically sensitive switches. The way to improve on what Wooting achieved for gaming, is switch design changes or lubrication to make the movement as smooth as possible, maybe eventually something crazy like magnetic dynamic or multi-stage resistance (like PS5 triggers have) to make things like virtual dynamic tactile bumps, maybe n clicky button at the bottom of the switch for extra commands (hold to drive/run, click down further to toggle boost or sprint), and better keycap profiles and layouts suited to gaming. Wooting use a generic 60% layout, and there's no way that's optimal for games, especially with the caps lock key there which I've never once seen a game use, nor the windows key in favor of longer CTRL+ALT.

  • With keyboards like the qk75 and zoom tkl in the same price range as this, i don't really see any way to justify buying one of these rog boards. The only explanation i can come up with is that people arent aware of the better options. Even if u want a prebuilt theres much better, cheaper options

  • sounds plasticky and hollow but I've heard worse, especially the stabs. Still a good job Asus. I wonder how it sounds when modded.

  • Love this video, a gaming keyboard has a place in the market. Not everyone wants or need a custom board. It’s all about personal preference and keeping an open mind. Thank you for a great video!

  • Honestly if you're willing to put a bit of efforts into building your keyboard, for the prince point of "gaming keyboards" you can get yourself a really nice custom with amazing specs. This is like the difference between a prebuilt PC and something you assemble yourself. Plus these keebs sound absolutely terrible. As someone's who's used to tuning for feel and sound, this is honestly unforgiveable at that price.
