In the fourth episode of Car Trek series 6, the guys leave the cornfields of Kansas and head out to summit America's most famous mountain road, Pikes Peak. But along the way, a few things happen. Ed's Mercedes-Benz S55 AMG is just as broken as it started out, Freddy's Lexus LS400 develops a common yet annoying fault, but Tyler's Tesla Model S P85 completely gives up, despite having every indication of being charged. Elon Musk may want to skip this video.

  • I won't deny the w140 and w220 are more luxurious than the UCF10/UCF20, but they're also a thousand times more of a masochistic ownership nightmare than the Lexus could ever be. 150,000 mile lifespan vs 500,000 is a no brainer

    @alanwrobleski@alanwrobleski2 жыл бұрын
    • Their are plenty of examples of the w140 and w220 with way over 200,000 miles on them. Most cars get junked around those miles anyway, even your ls 400. Plus you don’t have to do timing belts on those s classes. My w140 has 180k miles on it and I’ve had it since 110 and it never left me stranded or failed to start, and still fires up every time. Same thing with a w220 i have. 169k miles. Sat for 5 years and after some basic service it fired right up. The failure rate of the s class is greatly exaggerated. Most failures come from the secondary features that won’t prevent you from driving the car. Better still the w220 comes with high performance variants and the service for those gets lumped together with the normal spec cars which are perfectly reliable as many owners can attest. The ls400 at it’s core is a camry with a v8, that’s why it’s reliable. There’s is not much to go wrong.

    • The S-classes will have at least as much life span in them as a Lexus. No other brand has as many cars with as many miles on them before junked as MB. At 150k miles an S can still feel like an alsmot new car.

      @martinsvensson6884@martinsvensson68842 жыл бұрын
    • Lol but your LS400 will look like complete shit after like 50k miles. Take an uber ride in any Lexus from 2010 or earlier and you will notice that the leather wares horribly in such a short time, even seats that go unused end up deteriorating in some way shape or form. Was like this in my GS450, was like this in my G35 Sedan but my 528i F10 literally looks brand new inside it with over 100k miles. My mothers Range Rover has over 150k miles and it still looks beautiful inside. Quality is quality. And quality costs money.

      @mycomputergl0wsblu@mycomputergl0wsblu2 жыл бұрын
    • Contrary to what you've been told, the W220 is the most reliable S-Class mechanically (not the V12 or the ABC models, though the early V12 is still fine after oil cooler issues resolved). The failed cathodic solution issues destroyed most of them but they varied heavily in protection due to the nature of the mistake. I remember seeing a Reddit post from a guy in South America with the equivalent of nearly 800k miles on his.

    • @@ericMT It's meant to be a daily commuter, not a road trip car, it's not shocking that it wouldn't be able to take the same routes ICE cars can, just because of the lack of infrastructure for electric cars.

      @watersnortmoment3734@watersnortmoment37342 жыл бұрын
    • @@watersnortmoment3734 It's impractical and our government leaders not just in the US but all over the world don't get it. ICE cars are basically being left for dead with no good replacement. I need a car I can actually drive when it's 5 degrees outside or 100 degrees outside the range doesn't fall off a cliff, I can't spend hours waiting on it to charge and I need a vehicle capable of not just commuting but taking a moderate distance trip without the fear that the car will need to be towed. So far what I see of the electric cars is they are great for the daily commute but not so good for any kind of trip. There isn't one that matches the utility of most gas cars and they cost a fortune. Basically I can go buy an suv for around 40k-50k brand new that has all wheel drive, can tow, has 8 seats, has space for cargo and can be used for road trips as well as commuting. There isn't even an electric car with those features even if I had 100k to spend. Simply put there isn't an EV that cannot replace the US family hauler. Teslas are the best electric car and even they are just a niche, it's not a primary car for most people. I looked and considered it but it was an awful lot of money to pay for a car whose usefulness was limited to daily commuter even with huge amounts of government support. The practicality of this for regular folks just isn't there.

  • When I was learning to drive my father kept a long-handled flathead screwdriver and a wooden-handled steak knife in his glove compartment. On the occasions where turning the key on his 14-year-old Plymouth produced no effect, you could: a) hold the tip of the flathead screwdriver between thumb and forefinger, and with a quick motion whack the starter solenoid with the handle. It would get stuck, and a sharp blow would free it. B) use the steak knife to short the terminals on the starter, hoping that the wooden handle insulated well enough to prevent you from getting a bad shock. Dealing with things that are still mostly functional but technically broken has always been part of driving a car for me.
