Thanks to AutoTempest.com for sponsoring this series!
--------------------------------------------------------------------
In the fifth episode of Car Trek series 6, AutoTempest challenges the guys to buy off-road trucks as their last set of vehicles for their Ultimate $30,000 dream garage. And before someone asks, no - no one got a 2022 Ford Bronco. Tyler goes old school and brings a Jeep Wrangler with a weather Jurassic Park livery, Freddy brings a bone-stock Mitsubishi Montero Limited, complete with highway tires, and Ed's Porsche Cayenne has both the looks and mods to make it a serious off-roader. In theory.

I have a 2010 3.2did My self and it have just about 460.000km (286.000miles) in it now, 50/50 gravel/ asphalt. Since i've done everything on that car since new I can give you a list of things that have been changed over the years except ordinariy service stuff: 1. Of course brake disks and pads.. 2. Wheel bearings all around one time on every wheel. That's it. They are built like Tanks! Cheers from Northern Sweden 🍻

    • Absolutely agree, I am also a mechanic and Monteros are really bulletproof, I have had a Gen. 2.5 for ten years, Montero 1999 LWB 2.8 turbo diesel with manual transmission and super select transfer, every day I drive it I like it more , maintenance, normal, ball joints and some steering terminal, drive belts, three times the glow plugs and twice the clutch assembly since I use it a lot with a trailer and to tow my clients when their vehicles break down. I see them sell all the time at roughly that price. If you want a pavement princess those are closer to $10k but the clearcoat on his is fked so he would be lucky to get half. Even at peak pandemic they weren’t selling for that much.

Throughout every series so far there are always wild discrepancies between all 3 vehicles involved. • But then it wouldn’t be a Top Gear rip off anymore… Lol but I agree. I would much prefer to actually see what 30k could actually get you. It’s not much of an ad for autotempest when half the cars were vehicles they already owned, or “bought” for a dollar. I get that they are trying to make something entertaining for everyone, but as a car guy I would prefer it if it weren’t so scripted and trying so hard to be like Top Gear. The whole car trek thing has kind of turned me off from all their channels a bit.

And Tavarish’s monologue about his family’s story revealed a side of him that I had previously known nothing of… and it honestly had the effect of getting me to like him so much more as a human being… And that whole motivational thing he said about not letting others discourage you, and proving them wrong by showing them you can achieve your dreams.. • For the year that they have, the jack was actually beneath the rear seat, and as for the tools I don't know the stock location, but I've always had them in a bag near the jack. I believe they changed it when they did a "redesign" of the gen three's. You are correct about the location, but if memory serves me right that is only true about the early gen three's. One way to tell is the fog lights, the early ones has a bit of a squareish shape, while the newer redesign has the circular fog lights (like in the video). I believe that they switched up the design in 2002-2003, although my numbers might be off.

Went everywhere my 12H-T 60 Series went and had very few issues (just a few aftermarket parts issues) and in the later years it towed a caravan around for him and Mum as well. The right rubber, a good bullbar and the right springs and shocks made it almost unstoppable. Almost 400,000kms on it now as it sits in my shed now awaiting a resto at some point.

  • It just amazes me, how we actually got multiple replacements for Top Gear after the lads left. The Grand Tour has been far better than expected, although not flawless. And then you have Car Trek, which is exactly the kind of shennanigans I missed from the old Top Gear. The fact that most of the cars are used, mostly affordable cars that most of us can relate to, is such a bonus. The chemistry and rivalry between the three is just perfect, plus all the beloved "characters" that keep popping up, like The Wizard, Jared, John Temerian, just to mention a few! Car Trek has been amazing since the first episode, and I am so happy it wasn't just a one-and-done deal, we the viewers have been blessed with multiple seasons, far beyond what I would have ever dreamt would happen!
