Taiwan earthquake: More than 600 stranded a day after 7.4 magnitude strike | BBC News

Rescuers in Taiwan are working to reach more than 600 stranded people, a day after the island experienced its worst earthquake in 25 years.
One survivor has recounted how tremors unleashed rockslides "like bullets" around the coal mine he was working at.
The 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit near the eastern county of Hualien, killing nine and injuring more than 1,000 people.
Some stuck in tunnels and near a national park have been rescued by helicopters, but 34 are still missing.

  • Incorrect reporting. Most buildings did not collapse. They leaned. Taiwan has very stringent building laws, which is why the death toll was so low.

    • @@the.mystictraveller It's not a form of collapse. The goal in earthquake design is to allow excessive deformation and prevent failure modes that may bring the building down, such as the failure of columns. When a building is leaning, plastic hinges have developed in the beams and not in the columns, which is the goal of seismic design for large earthquake events.

As a result, the house collapsed and she died. In fact, most of the deaths came from mountainous areas. Fortunately, eight French climbers had been rescued just in the morning. However, there are other people in the mountainous areas who have lost contact. I am Taiwanese.I used google translate to translate it from Chinese.

  • What a miracle for an earthquake of this magnitude to have such disproportional death toll. Taiwanese government doesn't stop taking care of its own people first. I've no doubt the resilient Taiwanese people will bounce back to normal daily lives in no time! Taiwan was able to learn from the last similar earthquake back in 1999 and strengthen building codes in the past few decades to combat such natural disasters. The Taiwanese government has the foresight to prepare its people for what's to come.

  • Many years ago, I was traveling across the mountains in Taiwan from the East Coast (Hualien) to West Coast (Taichung) when an earthquake hit and a landslide filled the road in front of us with huge boulders, stranding us. It was about 6-7 hours before a bulldozer came and cleared the road so we could continue the journey - but thinking about it - that was actually a very quick rescue! Taiwan can be a very laid-back place, but it is also efficient when it's important.

Geologists and I think engineers or something use different ways to mark directions for strike and slip angles and such on maps. Wouldn't worry too much about it unless you're thinking of joining the fields. The integer value is usually enough for most people to judge how bad it is, 0.2 difference is kind of unimportant.

    • Although in Asian culture we do tend to hide our negative emotions. But as a Taiwanese, it is easy to see that although this earthquake was very powerful, the actual damage caused was relatively very minor. Compared with the 921 earthquake 25 years ago, the trauma this earthquake caused to us can be said to be minimal. Therefore, most Taiwanese people have resumed their daily lives after confirming that each other is safe. At most, it’s on social media or in conversations with each other about how panicked that morning was, or how many items were knocked out of the house.

      @user-sb7jz5ln1r@user-sb7jz5ln1rАй бұрын
    • People definitely talked about it, at least all the people around me. But keep in mind the damage wasn't terrible comparing to the 921 earthquake and the casualty is quite minimal considering the size of earthquake this big. People also are used to small earthquakes on a regular basis. If you search on local social media, there are complaints and venting posts, but for the major cities, life returned to normal quite quickly.

Taiwan has her own currency, govt, defence force, passport, territory, people, sovereignty. Taiwan people decide their own policies by their Congress and how their tax$ goes, never in a single day paying tax$ to dictatorship PRC CCPchina. Covid-19 started in PRC CCPchina.
