They have a building built to look upside down. Also those rocking vehicles the bus and being on scooters on a bridge would be very unsettling. You’d have to question of the integrity of everything after that. Notice. No looting.

      @joshgrimm8443@joshgrimm8443Ай бұрын
    • Because they reguarily get earthquakes, so they have been forced to make their buildings better The ones that fell I assume were in lower income areas and possibly had soft story issues. To my understanding, knowledge about how to build buildings to withstand earthquakes has greatly advanced and certain building styles have been identified as very vulnerable. I live in SF, and we're similarly earthquake prone, and yet we had a bunch of buildings that were soft stories, and the government basically forced owners to retrofit for public safety sake iirc. Newer buildings need to be earthquake resitent (I cannot explain how millennium tower got approved...) Vs In areas with less earthquakes, they have had less a need. Buildings get built for the needs of the areas. Like, our smaller buildings are mostly wood construction here due to cheap wood, but also harder to make em earthquake proof. Vs, in parts of Europe (Germany and England?), it's a lot of stone/brick, as that's what works for their areas and they don't tend to have earthquakes.

    • But note, these buildings are 50 years old and though the ground level collapsed and the building is on a lean, the buildings stay intact meaning most people survive and can still get out. Still impressive, the main thing to avoid is buildings collapsing in on themselves, that's when lots of people die or get trapped.

  • Guessing the fallen buildings had soft stories issues -- looks to be buildings with ground floor stores, likely didn't build enough support to parts of them . There's been a lot of retrofitting here in San Francisco to fix soft stories as they're very vulnerable in this big type of quakes. IIRC the city government went around and identified vulnerable buildings and basically forced them to upgrade for public safety and occupants sake -- we're gonna get another big quake eventually where we are, and those buildings would likely have fallen.
